I think the point of this video shouldn't be "why can't they do it themselves". Of course they can't. It shouldn't be expected of regular people to own luthier equipment. The problem is scam companies trying to take advantage of people who know nothing about instruments by marketing DIY violins as "easy building kits", like they're model airplanes one can just glue together.

@SculptyWorks

@@z3cki True! But I would look into what is needed before buying a DIY model airplane, so I could be prepared to seriously attempt to build it. 😊 It's hard to tell how serious they would have been if the thing hadn't been smashed during shipping. Who knows, maybe they would have involved Olaf their luthier for help, but since it was broken they didn't bother... We will never know! 😉

@@SculptyWorks If you try to buy them online, most of the selling website give you the impression that you can just put them together like lego. there is no where ever mentioned that you need any tools. The whole point of their video is about 'don't buy those if you are not a violin maker. it is a video to point out how ridiculous it is to sell those while give people impression that you can just assemble and paint it. I think it is for people who share the same understanding of what a DIY kit is. If I buy something from a store, I would expect that it will tell me what tools I need. this is basically a scam.

DIY violin sounds like a terrible idea tbh, unless u have specialize tools, craftmanship & right knowledge, that thing is unbuildable, it doesn't even come with an instruction booklet, so I guess it make sense that they seems awfully confuse.
@SculptyWorks
@SculptyWorks 3 жыл бұрын
Could you imagine what the instructions would be like if they were translated to Engrish like some of the stuff we buy from China? 😉 (I wrote in English and ran through Google Translate to Chinese and back to English and this is what I got) "Assembly instructions in 10 simple steps: To assemble violin, you need use glue, drills, saws, files, scrapers and miscellaneous luthier tools. First, cut a mortise on neck of violin body. Secondly, glue neck to body of violin. Third, make the shape of the button match neck foot. Fourth, drill and ream end pin holes (and adjust the shape of end pin fit). Fifth, varnish. Sixth, glue on fingerboard and nut and shape nut. Seventh, drilling and reaming holes. Eighth, shaping and drilling nails. Ninth, cut the bridge fit. Tenth, cut and install the dubbing column, and set up violin. Enjoy new violin!" "dubbing column" was "soundpost" 🤣 P.S. I'm not making fun of the Chinese, it's just that some of the instructions we get sometimes seem like they weren't written by a person who speaks English. P.P.S. As a regular Harbor Freight customer I have read far too many instructions that look like they were translated by a computer and it never ceases to amuse me. 😊

@TheVoitel
@TheVoitel 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. You should have some woodworking skill, and then you probably have most of the tools you need. The only specialized tool you’s need are a 10:30 reamer and a peg sharpener (as well as a hook for putting in the soundpost). Actually you can make your own peg sharpener, and if you are very brave you could try fitting the peg holes without a reamer, though you probably won’t be very sucessful. And then, you probably won’t need a highest quality reamer anyway (considering the quality of the product), so you could eighter buy a cheap chinese one or a used one, and save quite a bit. These things seldom come with instructions, but the most important points can easily be found on the internet. So while you definitely won’t get a high quality instrument out of this, you might, with some effort, get something that is considerably better than a $60 Violin.

I have a personal dislike for the carbon fiber adjustable soundposts. 😉 I have seen twice people got those and thought they could now set their soundposts themselves; not knowing how much to 'adjust' them, they made them too tall and caused cracks on the violins. On top of that, last time I checked these things were very, very expensive (US$468 for the violin size)!

It is absolutely ridiculous to expect regular people to have expensive specialized tools to build the DIY violin. Even with DIY guitar, you can pretty much build it with minimal everyday tools. Even without the unit being broken during the shipping, the product is misleading to say the least.

It may take hours to do it even half decently so perhaps Olaf really didn't have the time for that. He makes his own videos sure but it's fooling around a bit or explaining something in 10 minutes, or recording some actual work. So it either requires someone that makes a living of youtube, or just a passionate fun project you're fine investing some time into.

They weren't prepared because DIY is building things without the aid of experts or professionals. It's supposed to be newb friendly and they expected the kit to include everything necessary. It was completely false advertising because if they knew it was a kit oriented towards luthiers, they wouldn't have bought it. DIY kits are kinda scammy.

But it's understandable, that's how their channel is. They cannot spend too much time and effort on just one video: they have to have a constant flow of videos... Also if I tried to do something like this, even if I spent a full week on this, the result would be probably not better. So for them it's the right thing to not risk too much for just a single video. Especially because it's not in their domain of competence.

As to why they have no drill... In their 'making a carrot flute' (though it was a recorder) vid they had to bore a hole inside it and their friend Ollie offered his drill. Both of them freaked out. Ollie offered to do it for them and Eddy said that that was the scariest thing he'd seen in his life... This perhaps is your answer. They value their fingers above all else. I'm scared of drills too and pay for simple DIY! I've now scrolled down the comments to see others have said the same thing!

Cute cat!!! But yeah, if special tools and skills are needed to build something, shouldnt be marketed as DIY. sadly there's a lot of false ads online. That sacrilegious violin kit being one of them. The whole DIY concept is supposed to be a product that can be assembled using minimal tools that people already have at home or can easily buy. Even the furniture i get sometimes come with its own screwdriver and wood glue. I wouldve expected the violin parts to have already been pre-cut/chiseled (as opposed to blanks), because even simple woodworking is a skill that not everybody has. At least twoset got the $60 back a hundred fold with the youtube views hehe

Quite amusing to watch and learn some things about the production process along the way. I would definitely enjoy seeing you tackle one of these DIY violin kits. As for tools, here in Germany it is pretty common to have a small set of tools in the household (usually stuff like hammer, nail, screwdriver, screws and yes, a basic drill), the kind of stuff you need to assamble most furniture or put a picture on your walls. ;) More complex tools are often shared among family with members of the extended family owning them and either loaning them for a project or even stopping by to assist.

i don't have a drill lol i think their point was a warning to people , not to buy cheap "DIY" violins because the average person will NOT be able to put it together- which i guess they proved along with copious amounts of sticky tape lol thus why they say at the end to always go to the Luthier. i've heard ppl buy cheap violins online and are always annoyed how it's not what they expected so.. less twoset being underprepared and more like purposefully going "we're just average people; this isn't possible"..... but also i do suspect all they have is stationary and musical instruments, not tools lol. please get one ! i've been wondering what would become of one of those DIY violins if a pro puts it together !

I think you should get one - if you tune the plates they can sound okay. I have put together two of them and they both are quite playable - currently building a new one completely from scratch (not a kit), so it was a good introduction for me to learn how to assemble a violin. Yes, you need some luthier tools like the peg shaver and reamer and indeed a drill and a scraper for improving the plates, and a knowledge of working with hide glue but they are quite straightforward if you are already a reasonable woodworker.

@SculptyWorks I loved the video and the possibilities of making a diy are many as suggested by subscribers, I am now one. I was attracted to the kit because I felt that if I took my time and did everything correctly, I may bring something worthwhile to life. If not, then it can still be a source of inspiration to my violin (Joshua) and viola (George).

I am loving this video, and appreciate the education! 😊😊 I feel like the kit should have either come with instructions or come better prepared. I'm not sure who the target audience is, but when I decided to learn violin and was looking stuff up I did pass these kits a couple of times. 🤷🏽‍♀️

The drill though! The drill! I was so shocked as well when I heard he doesn't own one because it's one of those most basic stuff you just have, but maybe its an (Austialian?) classical musician thing? It was still a really funny video though. And thanks for adding extra information on top of theirs, it's always fun to learn new, little things about how instruments are put together :D

I realized all they had in the violin making kit were blanks because I grew up with a lot of DIY. Everything not in the right size? You trim them down yourself. 🤣 Knowing my way around tools came from parents who know their way around tools. Really fun and useful project come from tinkering about. I just bought my own cordless drill and accessory tool kit and I am ready to DIY things until the end of time.

Lololol my house also have no drills, I expect the point of DIY is to only need tools that are accessible even people with no woodworking equipment nor skills though, that's how we're can still sort of assemble IKEA products ourselves. BUT yes, it'd be fun to see you assembling the DIY violin and shout out to your cat, they're *_absolutely_* adorable and how they deflate when you were scolding them earlier. :')

I think building a kit like that would be fun to watch. Realistically though, you might need to get the aliexpress tools too. That would be a more realistic scenario.

I am just a humble KZbinr with a small channel, can't be buying all new tools like that. ...even if they would be cheap as dirt! 😉

@@SculptyWorks i understand that. Still interesting to see a kit being built by a professional. Maybe i can change the question a bit. I need at one point to rebuild the box of bits that used to be a violin owned by my grandfather on my mother's side. I'm not going to buy professional tools for a once in a lifetime project. So finding out wether these Chinesium tools are any good would be helpful. The do's and don'ts of China-Shopping Luthier Tools. could be a series on the channel, one cheap tool at a time. And thanks for keeping me educated and entertained.

@@willemkossen Thank you for the suggestion/question. I find the general rule regarding 'cheap tools' these days is that you basically are doing the quality control yourself. The materials might be just the same as more expensive tools use, but the quality of finish/assembly will vary greatly. So an aliexpress peg shaver might be just fine, except that you'll have to sharpen the blade yourself on one, while another comes sharpened just fine, but might be out of alignment. When buying cheap tools, it becomes a matter of being resourceful with adjustment/maintenance of said tools to make sure they're in good order! I never count on them being fine right out of the box. 😊 Even my expensive quality stuff I double-check to make sure they're right before using them! When you're used to cheap tools that becomes second nature. 😉

@@SculptyWorks I agree. I am doing a lot of woodworking, woodturning and repairwork. It's been a habit to improve the cheaper tools i buy. So indeed, not assuming they will be great is a good starting point. Thanks for replying!

I have the feeling Twoset does a lot of improvisation. Which is fine because it does give a casual, human character to what they do, I really hate to feel the pretense of spontaneity, fake naturalness a lot have in front of the camera. But it also may make them look surprisingly underprepared sometimes. I guess it's a balancing act and they're still learning this youtube 'profession'. I have the feeling a lot of off camera work goes into the successful channels which includes decisions like this, how much to prepare, how to look casual even if you've prepared extensively etc. Like playing violin, how to make it look easy after you put a lot of background work into it.
@SculptyWorks

I think they mentioned in one of their crossover videos that there's really no script for what they do, they have a basic outline and go for it on the spot. That's actually how I do my videos too, and sometimes I wonder if I should try planning better for things, specially when I want to say something, because when I look at the camera I freeze and my mind goes blank! But that takes away the spontaneity when things don't go according to plan, and while thankfully nothing so far has gone too terribly wrong on my videos, I like the curveball moments that show sometimes things don't go as planned and you have to adapt to make it work. 😉
