It's so interesting to see this from a white perspective, because all of Tyler Perry's movies are comical exaggerations of the "hood drama" genre. A lot of his inspiration is attributed to black culture and things he's witnessed growing up (even being quoted that Medea is based on the old women in his neighborhood). To you this is strange and gonzo, but this is symbolic of traditional American black culture and the black experience. These movies are successful because they're relatable. Not to every black person, but enough people (more specifically the baby boomers and gen Xers). If you want to experience pure uncut Tyler Perry, watch his stage plays.

Nyx Fears see I've never been a fan of his movies, despite growing up with them (the cinematography is off-putting af) however I am fond of his plays and recommend them to anyone who wants the genuine Tyler Perry experience (don't worry about finding them, there's bound to be a 4 part DVD rip of it somewhere in internet land). They're so interesting because it's a parody of hood drama novels and black drama movies while also being mostly serious character studies. It's kind of the same plot. Stereotypical black drama ensues (bald dark skin man beats his wife, her kids are out of control, the teen character is dealing with baby mama drama, drug dealers, abusive relationships, ect. Old black people dealing with old black people shit) and then Madea intervenes as a comedic relief/voice of reason and everything is solved by the antagonist getting their asses beat, the protagonists finding god, and end on witty catchphrase from Madea. It's self aware while also being tone deaf and no where does it show more than the stage plays. The whole concept of Madea is a double entendre, Madea being a colloquialism for 'My Dear' and a reference to the tragedy of Madea, which if anyone is unaware is an old Greek (or Roman idk) play about a woman who kills her own kids because her husband left her for a younger woman. Tyler Perey may not be the best film director, but that man is a genius playwright.

I'm glad you enjoyed watching his movies! I live in the South, and his movies have basically been a staple of my childhood. I remember times where my mother would very casually put on these different movies. Every time we catch an especially notable Tyler Perry movie on TV, sometimes we'd watch it together. It's fun to watch because it's such a big exaggeration. I don't live in the hood, but I've heard horror stories about it, and Tyler's movies seem to give it a weird personification in Medea. She isn't the worst of it, nor the best of it, shes' just a woman living her life, and it's kinda fun to see the way she approaches things.

Coming from a black person NO. At some point yes back when he was producing films like "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" , "Madea's Family Reunion", "the good deeds" and some of his plays in the early years. THOSE were relatable and actually involved real life struggles and situations and Incorporated African American culture in a non stereotypical "ghetto" way. Now a day's these films are just embarrassing and are popular for the same reason Michael Bay films are who TF knows.

So midway through this, I did a quick search on Google: "tyler perry abuse", and it was incredibly enlightening to his thought process in the most depressing way. The man himself was abused as a child, and as was touched on in the video, it's hard to tell if the movies are a satirical condemnation of abuse or a sincere attempt at portraying a moral. So that's some depression for ya. By the way, excellent video.

Lisa H He's actually stated outright that he started writing plays as a form of therapy to deal with the stuff he went through as a child, and I feel that. Turning the dark aspects of one's own life into broad comedy is a way a lot of people I know with that kind of trauma deal with it day to day.

My mom owned a lot of dvds of his plays and I we went to one of his plays live and we went to a convention where we got to take pictures with the cast of "meet the browns". Meh, It depends. The first couple of plays and their movie adaptions were actually pretty good within the context of the culture it parodied (mostly southern, black communities based in their unique Baptist, AME, and other charismatic christian churches) and how well it accomplished that goal. From that perspective, It doesn't really get eyeroll inducing until Madea Goes to Jail and anything after. That's when his characters become so (much more) one-dimensional and a lot of the really good music was gone from the plays. They hardly showed any of the elements of the community it was based on and turned from at least SLIGHTLY meaningful parody to unflattering caricature.

I used Ed Wood as an autuer when studying film, and it got a great reception - the essay is actually used in a book on film studies. He's considered one of the worst film directors, but that doesn't mean his work has nothing valid and it's clear he saw the world in a very certain, even forward-thinking way. Every director has something to say, even if it's awkward or disagreeable. You've given a great example here of how to look at work that is hit and miss at best.

I wish Nyx touched on Madea's Family Reunion. It really highlights all the points he made about Tyler Perry movies. Plus there's this seriously messed up backstory between the mother and one of the daughters in the film that I guarantee wouldn't fly if Tyler Perry wasn't as ignored as he is. Dude can touch on childhood sexual abuse perpetuated by a desparate parent while playing up Madea's abusive parenting for laughs. It's fucked up most definitely, but it's so wonderfully absurd.

@@Armendicus No, that character was from Madea's Big Happy Family. The character she's referring to allowed her boyfriend to rape her daughter as a child. The mother also mentions somewhere in the film that their grandmother sold her for drugs, but she only mentioned it to victimize herself and to take away from the trauma she put her daughter through (I can't remember exactly, but it was something like that). Oh, and just like in all of Tyler Perry's films, the mother praises one of her children while being emotionally abusive to the other (the abused one being the daughter she allowed to get raped). (Gosh, I'm making so many edits, but I also have to mention this; one of the daughters is engaged to an abusive man who beats her and her mother constantly dismisses his behavior and praises him for being 'such a good man').

For Colored Girls is another weird one that could have been looked at. Tyler Perry adapting a plotless experimental play about the lives of black women. He just cut up a lot of the monologues, built a bunch of melodrama plots around them and between long stretches of dialogue that he wrote, the actresses will start randomly reciting the monologues from the play verbatim and the difference between the two is so jarring. It’s like watching someone snap into a badly lead into musical number. Also the cast in that one is fucking stacked. Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Tessa Thompson, Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson, and Thandie Newton and those are just the ones I can remember. It’s got everything, sham marriage subplots, cults, sketchy back alley abortions, and clumsily executed rape scenes intercut with footage of opera performances.

The only thing worse than Tyler Perry's movies are his tv shows, he is the sole writer, for all of his tv shows (because he refuses to pay union writers). As you can imagine this makes all of his shows extremely repetitive and derivative, but he thinks any and all criticism is by "haters", so he won't he change it. Instead he'll continue to put out work that perpetuates negative stereotypes, and make light of problematic behaviors.

I think thats a definite yes on the idea that the discordant themes in his movies are intentional. His works are a satire of the melodramatic pieces he started up in, and medea is a delightful mirror on society's voracious morality. I think the fact more recent ones have featured more obvious comedy over subversive drama is a reaction to how many viewer were taking his old testament morals seriously.

The only Tyler Perry movie I've seen in its entirety is 'Why Did I Get Married?' It's not a bad movie - and from your descriptions of others, seems fairly normal for a Perry movie - but based on the other (Madea-laden) films he's made, I was expecting a comedy. It's *not* a comedy. I was expecting violent slapstick, and instead I got a scene where a couple release their bottled-up frustrations and guilt over the death of their young child.

Okay, finished the vid. I really appreciate the honest, objective analysis. Of course there's an element to these movies you didn't touch on, the black culture (and how it ties with the abuse), but I think you made the right call to focus on just the absurdity. I myself love Madea. She's a hilarious character. However, I don't like the other characters and their drama much at all most movies. And then of course the colorist casting still bothers me so much... These movies are at their best when they're focusing on Madea, her husband, and other obviously absurd recurring characters. I still laugh so much at Madea and her husband running from the police! Rant though, that second Why Did I Get Married movie made me furious when I first saw it!! That ending was so BS, how could they just plop a happy ending on Jackson's character?? After all she went through and did throughout both films, that sudden rebound ending was too much! Don't even get me started one the other couples. And the Diary of a Mad Black Woman made me so uncomfortable... I agree with another commentor to watch Perry's plays rather than the movies. They focus more on the comedic side, generally.

i saw why did i get married too when i was 11 on tv because i VIVIDLY remember that blue room. i think my mom either turned it off then or i zoned right out, because i do NOT remember the birthday cake or the rock.

This reminds me that my sophomore class, when given a choice of movie to watch for whatever weird reason that I can't remember, chose a Madea movie (Madea Goes to Jail? I think?) over Terminator Salvation. :P

I think Tyler Perry has.....a lot of things he struggles with. Religion, expectations of heterosexual relationships, his place in society....yeah.

I think a lot commenters here including the "content creator" dont know what acting is about. What the meaning of scripts is. Next he will dig out "New Jack City" and speculate about Wesley Snipe´s intentions to create a drug empire..
@tatehildyard5332
@tatehildyard5332 6 жыл бұрын
The difference between the two is that Wesley Snipes is merely an actor who agreed to appear in the film for a pay check and exerts little personal or artistic vision over the final product unlike Tyler Perry. He does more than just act, he writes, directs, produces, and finances all of his own movies. When you exert that much of yourself into a film and your production is that insulated on regular basis, it makes sense your own views and feelings about the world would bleed into the production. Especially if the same views and themes show up across multiple films which they do in the Tyler Perry ouvre. This is the basis of atuer theory.

Nyx, I started listening to your videos while I did things around the house after I came across one and thought you were so interesting. I'd been avoiding this one because I was like "those movies aren't really for me", and I deeply regret that now because this video is awesome. You're amazing.

Like most of the time when I sit down to watch an hour youtube video it will be running in a background tab or I'll stop half way, but with your videos I completely watch the whole thing on my screen with popcorn because It's just so awesome.

What a video! I agree with your point that all art is important in its own way, because basically anything made by a creator comes from something that they feel or think about, intentionally or not.

Freaking awesome work! Its super refreshing seeing you blabber on about these movies, and im pretty happy to be able to see these really weird movies in a whole new light. I always thought these movies were super stupid and a waste of time, but I was just not looking at it with the right perspective. They may be stupid, yes, but even with it being stupid, there is a lot to think about and enjoy about the movie when moving away from just watching to observing. Thanks Nyx, for making me appreciate something I never thought I would ever appreciate, ever.

Hi Nyx. Its funny everything you've said in this video because, if I'm honest, its how I came to enjoy your brand of video. I started as a follower of NightMind and came across you in the occassional crossovers and Moonlight chats. When I first saw one of your videos I just couldn't get my head around and didn't come back.The strange mix of horror, absurdity and frequent breaking and repairing the 4th wall was hard to take seriously. Maybe I was being a bit to harsh in my judgement. But like many things in life sometimes you need to aquire a taste for something. A year or so on from first watching one of your videos, a few more Moonlight chats to understand you as a person and the Eraserhead analysis with NightMind and I've come to enjoy your presentation style. Its unique, hard to wrap your head around but very personal and definitely not something you'd find anywhere else. Keep it up. Never let go of your uniqueness.

Thank you for this video, this is just so absurd I love it. It was so nice to see a review that wasn't just constantly bashing his movies making every obvious joke there is. Instead you dove deep into the reasoning behind the movies and examining the absurdity of them all. Another great video Nyx I'm so glad Night Mind introduced me to you the first time you guys did a video together in (I think) 2015. The only reason I was interested in a Madea Halloween was because Dom Mazzetti(Mike Tornabene) and Bradley Martin are in. But now I just love the absurdity of these movies.
