Damn man, u beat me to it by a whole year! But indeed it's true, it shows in how their interstella is a love letter to the main themes in this film, not to mention how their actual mask+leather-clad demeanor owes so much to winslow's phantom persona!

Why are obscure 70's movies the best things ever?
@kencoakley3959
@kencoakley3959 8 ай бұрын
Because, according to film historians, the 70s was one of the best decades in cinematic history, along with the 30s. I agree. This is one of my favorite films. When I was a kid back in the 70s, my sister and brother in law too know me to the drive-in to see such gems as Billy Jack, Walking Tall, Macon County Line, The Lord's Of Flatbush, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, Race With The Devil, Death Race 2000, Buster And Billie, Aloha Bobby And Rose, The New Centurions, Death Wish, Rolling Thunder. The list goes on.

Great documentary Nyx. Well narrated, you didn't leave out anything. I didn't see the Phantom of the Paradise upon its initial release, my Mom wouldn't let me go in 1974. I got the soundtrack album instead, and I played that bad-boy smooth. I also bought the POTP movie paperback, which I never read but I loved the b/w photos from the show. I finally watched the movie four years later at a repertory movie theatre for $2. It was worth the wait, and the movie had a lasting impression on me.

Man, I remember I came across this movie on... AMC, I think, when I was like eleven and it was on super late at night, and hoo boy, that shit really stuck with me. I wasn't quite old enough to get some of the metaphors, but even just taking it on it's face value... I remember that the ending kind of messed me up for weeks, just people dancing around after two people just died, not seeming to care at all. That and just... the visuals in general were super striking. I went in expecting some knock off Phantom of the Opera stuff, and came out a very confused and slightly more jaded child. Good stuff!

This is unbelievable. I’ve loved this film since it first came out. Memorized every song (would it surprise anyone that “Old Souls” is IMO one of the powerfullest love song EVAH.) Paul Williams isn’t much of a threat, which might be why, even though it surpasses RockyHorror in almost every way, Paul Williams is objectively not the presence of Tim Curry, so... great soundtrack goes largely unheard and unsung, while everybody else is doing the Time Warp again. Our little secret, you and I, Ms Nyx...

Ah, I'm glad this is finally viewable after all the time and effort you've put into it. It's great that you keep bringing movies that a lot of people would have never have heard of to light and that you're so passionate about them, I find that it's most enjoyable to listen/watch someone discuss something that they're passionate about. You've really influenced the way I read films now, on second viewing I start looking for symbols. Also, I really like the addition of more skele characters and the development of relationships, it's fun to watch. You're an inspiration and now I'm off to write something, you've really got me thinking about death of the artist recently. Anyways, thanks for another wonderful and inspiring video!!

Actually, you're right on the PHANTOM aspect. As far as the MONSTER....remember, LOOKS are DECEIVING. While Winslow might look like a monster after his mishap in the record plant, EVIL is as EVIL DOES. And Swan's unscrupulous behavior in stealing from Winslow becomes a fight to the death game of one-upmanship. What I have learned, the hard way, is that HATRED, born out of TRUST BETRAYED is unpredictable and dangerous. Swan would find this out as well. He messed with the trust of someone who believed in his talents as a producer. That betrayed artist would go to unbelievable lengths to even the score against an enemy he might have imagined as a creative mentor.

I saw Sisters a week after I saw Phantom... . I was watching it on t.v. and was struck by the guy who played Danielle's husband. He looked familiar. So I checked the t.v. guide. (remember those?) and he was listed as BILL Finley. NOT knowing that Bill was short for William, I assumed that he was William Finley's TWIN brother. I can't recall how I found out, but I discovered that the guy who played the obsessive ex of Margot Kidder's Danielle/ Dominique was the same guy who played Winslow . What a difference a movie makes. While not a musical, Sisters was a great weird Saturday afternoon flic! Still is.

If y'all relly want to talk about how Rocky Horror and this movie are related, the main chick in this plays Janet in the "sequel/not sequel" to Rocky, Shock Treatment, also written by Tim O'Brian. I'm a Phantom Of The Paradise fanatic. You were right about the casting being perfect. Gerrit Graham almost played Swan while Paul Williams was going to play Winslow, Linda Ronstadt was almost Phoenix, Peter Boyle was almost Beef and Sha Na Na were going to play The Juicy Fruits. The record label was supposed to be called Swan Song , but Led Zeppelin, who owned their own label called Swan Song, threatened to sue, so the Death Records logo was superimposed over the original Swan Song logo in post-production.

The bird name reference is definitely a thing, but what always struck me is that Winslow is not a bird, though he wears a bird mask, but Winslow IS a city in Arizona... as is Phoenix, which is mythicly a bird, but not a real bird, a magical bird that dies and is reborn in fire. Not sure what the point is here, but I've always felt like there was a reason for all that.

I just need to stop, take a second, and explain to everyone how much I love everything about this movie I've never seen. Like, shit dude, it looks like pieces of this made it into everything I love from the last 10 years.

Hi May, I hadn't heard of this film until the comic InSecurity has a child who always wears the costume. I think you would enjoy the comic.

Andrew Lloyd Webber was originally gonna make his Phantom based off this but then was persuaded to make it truer to the novel/a gothic romance. And here we are. And now we may never get Phantom of the Paradise the Broadway Musical
