As a black woman I remember growing up and essentially being forced to watch these. It was baffling to me how man people actually thought they were funny, uplifting and educational 😂 . I’m 23 now and realize they were just black trauma porn with bad acting, the most bizarre pacing and weird anecdotes at the end of the movie.

Yeah a friend of mine showed a Madea movie to me and for the longest time I thought “maybe it’s a cultural thing I’m not getting” (I’m mexican). It was only when I saw Pause during a boondocks marathon with other friends it hit me why I didn’t like it. ✨colorism✨ (actually there’s more I have a problem with but this was the big thing that hit me at first watch before I knew the term “colorism”)

The day I picked TBS, they aired Diary of a Mad Black Woman, and I dropped everything and got *way too* invested in the absolute fever dream of it all. I think Tyler Perry has some conflicting feelings about his abusive grandma. I dont know what else would fuel something like Madea. Like on some level he hates his extended family but feels like he ows his success to them and these movies are him working through that as a comedy.

Not a Madea movie but I just have to bring attention to one of Tyler Perry’s obscure dramatic films, “For Colored Girls” because it is absolutely buck wild and insane. It’s adapted from this experimental theatre piece about black female trauma with no real plot line made up entirely of long, poetic, monologues spoken by abstract entities representing black women through the passage of time. What Perry did was that he just came up with a set of standard Tyler Perry drama plots and characters and gave them Tyler Perry dialogue but sporadically gave the female characters the monologues from the play at random moments in the story and there’s no transition, they just switch into this completely different style of speaking mid-conversation clearly written by someone who’s NOT Tyler Perry. Also the ensemble for this is fucking stacked, you got Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington, pre-fame Tessa Thompson, Thandiwe Newton, Phylica Rashad, and even more people I’m having trouble remembering. It’s got everything, cults, back alley abortions, clumsily executed rape scenes, babies getting dropped out of windows, it is bonkers.

I just wanna sit down for a couple hours and talk to May about Tyler Perry so bad. Possibly try to explain what aspects of the Black experience he's satirizing with some of his characters, discuss the whiplash between the religious moralizing and raunchy jokes. The non-Madea movies were gaining in quality for a while, but his newer Madea movies have gotten sad: bad blocking, "comedic" scenes with no dynamism, terrible acting. A billion dollars, his own studio, producing the wildest shit. You should watch his shows if you don't, they're equally insane.

You ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! "his movies are incredibly LAZY." And that's attributed to the fact that he shoots them in like 4-5 days. And somehow he takes pride in that FACT. I'd be so offended if I were Black or even half or quarter Black. For one, he's written all these movies himself and refused to hire any Writers to help him out or even give him another perspective. The Writers that he's had in the past, were rudely FIRED because they wanted to be paid the same rate as their White counterparts from other Stations. However, Perry doesn't think they deserved to be paid equally simply because they're Black. Therefore, they don't deserve such pay and are not worth that amount of money. Also, Perry considers himself the Master and everyone else is a SLAVE. Therefore, their pay is a lot less!
