Tangier Island, VA is a place with only a few cars, but most transportation is by bike or golf cart due to its narrow roads. It is eroding into the Chesapeake Bay and sits only 3 feet above sea level.

it's pronounced "mackinaw" despite it's spelling Mark, i'm originally from that area though I've lived in Florida for the past 22 years the speed limit is the actual road limit because the only other transopt allowed there are horse drawn carriages and regular bicycles. it's a nostalgia town set to be like the 1920's

There are lots of places in Europe where they restrict cars in town. Madrid had a mayor they nicknamed “the mole” because he basically took most car traffic underground to tunnels where they would not interact with non car users. When you walk or bike around on the surface you have long stretches where you aren’t interacting with cars at all. When I go in to work I take a commuter train most times and bring an EUC with me, and it always seems silly that all these single occupant car drivers are gridlocking the downtown area, which sucks for them, sucks for the pedestrians they are interfering with blocking crosswalks, sucks for bike riders who have to deal with car drivers driven to impatience going into bike lanes to try to get past stopped traffic. There definitely should be strong disincentives for people bringing a car into high traffic areas. Mackinac Island isn’t really a place people live though, it’s a theme park, basically and so it’s pretty easy for them to have restrictions since you can only come in on the ferry and they can easily gatekeep that.

It used to be a place people lived until tourists ruined it. Same thing is happening all over Michigan. You can't go 3 hours without seeing an Illinois license plate anymore.

It would be hard a to carry 80-120 pounds of gear on an ebike... i ride 3000-5000 miles a year but still need a car for 90% of my work. I dont want to have to get a license for an ebike the government takes too much already!

Nobody much would enjoy living on Mackinaw Island.. it's just for tourists in summer months. The Bureau or tourism say they don't allow e bikes.. At least last year they didnt.. I wanted to take my bike their and they said no.

Mackinac Island is pronounced Mackinaw .. But only horses and regular bikes allowed. No E Bikes are permitted. Unless they just changed it recently.. Because they said they are too dangerous.

I have been to the island several times and it's not a place people want to live all year. It's a tourist destination you only get to by ferry. All the islands inhabitants are in some kind of tourist jobs.

Have been there several times. Mostly recently mid June 2024. Asked local P.D. about bike laws. All bikes not just ebikes must be licensed and only residents and visitors with medical reasons can have ebikes on the island. Also asked the bike rental shop at the Grand Hotel. Got same info plus the fact that the ferry services do not allow the lithium batteries on board. Totally understand the reasoning. Visiting there is a step into the past. Very cool place.
