So you know, those were both Marine Corps issue at some point. Both Army and Marines used the MMSS. There is an ACU digital camouflage bivy for the system that was strictly Army issue. The rest was the same, and I think both used the woodland camo pattern I sent you. Glad to hear you are using it. You have already used it more than I had in the last 5 years before I sent it. I did see the other one recently though. So I may get it out and use mine as well. ALL sticks are Bruno's stick. That's just the law. 🤣Stay well over there and I hope things get cool and wet soon!

You're close. I do believe the ACU was the "improved mss" it came with an extra stuff sack for just the patrol bag and bivvy. I have also heard it's about half pound lighter but this could just be variation. The military does not buy the woodland and hasn't for over a decade I believe. That said tennier still makes the woodland new with an nsn number. If I had to guess and it's just a guess it's that the military knows the ACU camo is a joke so tennier keeps these woodlands in production, selling them as surplus, just for the special occasion or need arises for a woodland style cammo. In other words it would not surprise me if they use the woodland in special forces applications where woodland is a better option. That said they would prolly go with multicam if that was their desire so who knows. It makes sense for marines and even more sense for special forces to have access to more than the current standard issue cammo

Hey! Glad I just found this comparison video. Had commented I believe it was yesterday on the other video not realizing you had already made this one a few months ago. I have ACU Camo version of that Woodland one you were showing. It is nice thick heavy duty Gore-Tex that’s for sure. Due to the lack of bug mesh I’ve only used it in the winter time. One night it got down to 12°F -11°C and woke up covered with about an inch and a half of snow. It performed very well keeping me dry and warm well insulated. At the same time the head covering where the zipper doesn’t come around allowed me to control how much airflow preventing to avoid condensation. There’s a bungee drawcord in the hood to tighten it up loosen etc. and that little piece of Velcro that supposed to hold the whole thing in place. Great for winter youth. I’m looking forward to getting the US Marine Corps coyote one and try that as well. Also the larger Gore-Tex version will hold bigger sleep system which might be better for extended cold-weather sleep system. Will look forward to trying my lightweight summer set up sleek and streamline inside the USMC bivy. Really like your videos. And seeing your four-legged friend makes me want to get outdoors with mine. Cheers🎉

I’ve had my woodland army bicycle a few years now and very pleased with it. Not the lightest but if I’m wild camping under a low pitch poncho with a mossy net for comfort, it’s ideal. 😎👍

That's because in our form of modern combat , which is largely inserting puppet regimes into 3rd world countries, the Marines are the force that are deployed into combat when something larger than special forces is required, not the army. The army rarely or ever sees action, they are there in case ww3 breaks out and in peace time to "peacefully" occupy bases around in other regions to further spread our western liberal democratic hegemony. Y'all should know this, after all it's partly why Putin has invaded Ukraine.

How do these compare to the British Army bivi in terms of size, weight and cost? I have one but like the look of the USMC bag but not sure if it is worth it. Cost being a big driver. To date the British Army bag has never let me down and it has been trough so really crap weather.

I’m interested in getting the USMC as a get home emergency shelter. I drive 60+ miles away from my home everyday for work. I live in FL so need the mosquito netting. I’m 6ft 2 inch and very slim

Honest question: is the marine corps gortex able to fit thicker sleeping systems inside? Like for extreme cold weather? The one thing I always liked about the army system was the variety of bags/temps you could fit inside.

I know this a late reply but the USMC bivy is part of a three season system when used in conjunction with the USMC three season sleeping bag and sleeping pad. Could you put a higher fill bag in the bivy? Probably but it is smaller. The USMC has a completely different system for "extreme cold weather".

@@RedBranchBushcraft I am not sure other than I don't think the nylon ptfe core is breathable. It doesn't work like a membrane. I believe the idea here is the mozzie netting also serves as ventilation. If the face is zipped and you're sealed inside while raining I believe this won't breath like gor-tex or similar technology. For example the snugpack bivvy is not gortex but it is described as a breathable membrane similar to gortex. This item is never described that way. To me nylon with ptfe core means it's 2 layers of nylon with a ptfe layer in between. Ptfe is a plastic that is sorta like a rubber basically and would be a waterproof barrier between the nylon layers. If that's the case, then this would not be breathable like gor-tex or a similar knock-off. That said it is possible the ptfe is acting like a thin rubber wet suit which would be breathable but not exactly water proof. Perhaps this is water resistant enough the way it's designed. Again tho I am not 100% sure of the fabric technology I just know they don't claim it's gortex nor do they even insinuate that it even acts like gor-tex in the official nsn description. In the end it's prolly semi-breathable and mostly water proof, but there is nothing to show that factually. I can only infer what nylon with a ptfe core really means

Invented in 1969, Gore-Tex can repel liquid water while allowing water vapor to pass through and is designed to be a lightweight, waterproof fabric for all-weather use. It is composed of stretched polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is more commonly known by the generic trademark Teflon. The material is formally known as the generic term expanded PTFE (ePTFE).

@@RedBranchBushcraft okay, then it does seem this is an attempt at off brand gortex. That's an interesting read because of the mention of Teflon, which is responsible for many banned byproducts over it's many iterations. I wonder if this iteration of a ptfe core is designed to avoid these known problematic toxins. Even if they really aren't really avoiding them IMHO. To give some insight into that speculation I do know that Teflon production was altered to remain compliant with health and environmental agencies. Sadly tho this compliance was largely acheived with chemistry smoke and mirrors the same way the illegal drug trade uses molecular composition to bypass legality and sell poison as THC or psilocybin substitutes online. Basically I'm now saying this is probably their own gortex like you are insinuating and now I'm specualting if it's because of the problematic nature of producing ptfe in general. A scarier proposition tho would be official gortex follows safety regulation and perhaps for cost the military bypasses this safe manufacturing and uses the old known toxic but cheaper ptfe manufacturing. That is a cause for alarm because we would never know and tbh the military would probably "not want to know" in a plausible deniability sense regarding their contracting someone to make this item.
