Simple summary: In Europe the player is considered the asset and the clubs pay to "own" that asset, develop it into a more valuable one, and then either sell the asset or keep it for themselves. In America the club considers themselves the asset and the player is expected to pay the club to develop them, thus eliminating many good young talents from ever getting the necessary opportunity/training to develop into a world class player.

Jairo Perez-Llanes bro I think the European method of developing a world class player is capitalism as well because they buy the asset cheap at a younger stage of their life and develop and make a huge profit. To me it’s still a form a capitalism because essentially it’s buy low and selling high. I think the US MLS owners care more for bringing fans and making money and quick return on their investment than developing talent I think it’s a greed issue because in reality they don’t care about being the best they care about building a loyal fan base to make money off. Why do you think LA FC over paid for Vela because of the Mexicans in LA and the fan base it can create and all they saw and thought about was money. Same with the Dos Santos brothers to galaxy.

Delboy0 what does healthcare have anything to do with how wrong the pay to play system is trust me I know it’s a horrible system I had to pay to play football and was a kid with a family of 50,000 year. I get it’s horrible system no one disagrees. You don’t have to turn it political or talk about greed like only Americans posses that characteristic. Greed is an enemy to men not just American or Mexican or English Men but Men. I agree with everything you are saying but can It go one day where people focus on the topic at hand

Lalas is out of his mind. How are you supposed to develop young players if your domestic league is internationally regarded (especially in Europe) as a glorified retirement home? Look at the major South American teams, vast majority of their stars, like Neymar, Messi, Aguero, Sanchez etc. ply their trade in the European leagues.

There is a lack of competition in MLS. All there is to fight for is a play-off place, which is the top 5-6 places in both conferences. Elsewhere, there are continental places, relegation places, and the 1st placed team actually wins the title.

I am a european and i mean no disrespect, but why have someone like Whitlock talk about a sport he clearly doesnt like or understand. Get people who are actually involved in the sport to talk about it. The US simply doesnt have a culture around soccer/football, like the European countries or the south americans do. It is that simple. Kids would rather play football or basletball, soccer is an after thought. Until that changes organically and it is going to take time, dont expect to be a major force. This team is average compared to the southern american powerhouses like Brazil, Argentina, Chille etc.
@RyanAustinDean
@RyanAustinDean 7 жыл бұрын
dim d No disrespect taken. I think FOX 1 had him speak because he’s one of their big voices, and they don’t yet have the staff to cover football, and they knew they had to talk about this. We need our lower/lower-middle income kids to fall in love with football. The present is actually a wonderful opportunity, as American football is experiencing a downward trend. The problem is that failing to qualify for the World Cup is taking wind out of our sails, and I’m not sure how much it will set us back. [EDIT] I don’t expect the USA to be Brazil or Argentina, but with 350 million-ish people to draw from, we could at least be close to a nation like Belgium (who we competed well against in 2014.).
@dimd9962
@dimd9962 7 жыл бұрын
It is a culture thing. I am from Greece, a small country, but in the past 10-15 years we had a lot of success nationally. Like you said, i f more kids start playing and fall in love with the game, it would be long until the national team becomes a powerhouse.

+Ryan Austin Dean Like Belgium? Ahahaha Dude pump your breaks. You should be dreaming about being more like Turkey, Bosnia, Slovenia, Costa Rica, Uruguay, etc. first [even freaking Iceland is setting up]. You also drew with us [Portugal], doesn't mean anything. Portugal was at a low point and the US was actually doing okay-ish. But Belgium is a stomping team. It means it stomps small teams like the ones you are used to play against and lose, or draw. The US is still too far away from teams like Belgium and might not ever achieve such level. Try Wales or Serbia.

dim d with "a lot of Success" you hopefully mean the Euro 2004 because except that, Greece sucks at Soccer as well haha. But you are right, the American Culture has to change, and i think if the Concussion Stuff gets bigger the next 10 Years that many People will let their Kids play Soccer instead of Football cauz its just safer. But even if the Culture doesnt change you can still do better, Colin is absolutely right here, the MLS is a Huge Problem for the US, the League might develop the Players but if they go to Europe they will develop them Into Superstars not just middle of the Pack Guys. Pulisic is the perfect Example he plays for Dortmund and he is developing so well in the Bundesliga playing with Guys like Dembele last Year, Aubameyang Götze Reus etc. playing against Bayern 2-4 Times a Year playing in the Champions League against Tottenham Real Madrid, if you really believe that playing in the MLS is better for a 16-19 Year Old then going to Europe, playing for Teams like Dortmund Ajax Barcelona Real Madrid. Teams who have shown that they can develop Great Talent into World Star Players.

The problem that the U.S. has is the same problem with Mexico (not comparing or saying either is better or worse) There are so many foreign players & I don’t have nothing against foreign players but if you want to have a good pool of players or at least lots of options you need to have more guys from the academies playing from a young age, think about it, if they debut at 18-21 years old that’ll still give them lots of time to develop & get experience & eventually head out to Europe hopefully Think about it home grown players play in the MLS’s big teams? Look at Bayern or Barca or Juve, they always have players from their own country playing Even look at River Plate, Boca Juniors São Paulo.

Don't involve politics with soccer because aint even close at all. Just like Colin said in morning about good soccer teams do their job as a team with a specific culture and ideology such as Germany, Brazil, Italy, Argentina because is something they work 24/7 inside and outside the soccer field. For those nations is a priority for always being the best and have as many titles as possible and even having a yellow card, a goal against, an expelled players is a hit not only for the player but whole team. Personally think USSF went down since Landon Donovan retired they lost their spirit as a single mind group and a common goal. American soccer players must die in the soccer field every game and crave for being better.

The problem with US Soccer is two fold. The first is that this idea of college soccer completely ruins any shot we have of ever competing. While 18 year olds in the US are getting scholarships to play college soccer....18 year olds in other countries are signing huge contracts to the best teams in the world (donnarumna, pulisic, mbappe etc). We can never be a soccer powerhouse when the goal of every young boy is to play D1 soccer not play professionally in Europe. Furthermore a goal of a hound developing player in the US should NOT BE TO PLAY IN THE JOKE OF A LEAGUE WE CALL THE MLS. Now the second part of this problem is the emphasis on athleticism, on speed, and on strength. What the US needs to understand is that soccer is not a sport where the fastest, strongest, and most athletic players are the best players. Andres iniesta and Isco have nowhere near the athleticism and strength as let's say Jermaine Jones or mousse cissoko from spurs. What's the difference? Iniesta and Isco KNOW THE GAME. Their soccer IQ is unparalleled. America has this long infatuation that the most athletic people make the best athletes but in the case of soccer it is more of a skill sport instead of a sport where athleticism is a major part of it (like basketball, football etc). The US needs to look at SOCCER PLAYERS not the most athletic personnel.

Football on a professional level requires skill, so I'm not sure what your point is. Also, those same kods who end up playing the other major American sports, would benefit, if they played soccer and was tagged at an earlier age...that's the point he's making. Yes, the athleticism comes into play but there are a ton of black kids who play in youth soccer leagues in America. They just aren't given the opportunity to play on club teams.

No promotion/relegation means no accountability. No clear style of play means no accountability. Not having a better coach even though you are pouring as much money as the rest of the concacaf nations combined means no leadership molding and no leadership brings no accountability. The draft system and the salary cap and free agency means that even if you are a good player you might be in a rebuilding franchise. It means that there is no continuity unlike Germany Italy France England, the American way of doing sports is great if you are putting an abundance of money more than the rest of the world. Be sure perhaps not in this decade but by the next one the rest of the world will surpass the USA in almost every sport.

In every other sport the best players want to play in the top league. Most American players never play outside the MLS. Why? Because they feel comfortable playing in US. Living in UK you see teams looking for players around the world. But you never hear them looking at US players. Goalies yes because the develop later but out field players nope. Also the collage system hurts young player development. They don't play enough games against good players.

Concacaf is the easiest confederation to qualify from. Apart from the US, Costa Rica and Mexico. The rest of the teams are there to make up the numbers. The US sucks so much that they couldnt beat out Panama and Honduras. And bruce arena claims that European teams would struggle. Send someone like Wales or Hungary (teams that didnt qualify) to qualify through concacaf. They would finish top of the hex everytime.

The problem is that Americans view futbol as another American sports that just plugs into the system and competes as normal. Futbol Soccer is a different beast. The Federation needs to look at it from a different perspective as they now do. This pay for play system has its limitation and will never generate the level and quantity of players needed to truly compete at top international level. The US, like Mexico, should thank their lucky stars they are in Concacaf and not part of UEFA or Conmebol. If the US Soccer Federation really wants to develop players... they need to scout grammar and middle schools for raw talents in addition to their usual pay for play organizations and then negotiate with the MLS clubs to take on these young high school age kids and place them in the MLS academies... where they can be taught proper technique and tactical set ups. The very best ones might be placed in Europe for finishing. All of these has to be made at the expense of the Federation and not the kid's family. If we continue to wait for the MLS by itself or worse yet.. college kids to develop ... we are already behind the 8 ball.

I know a lot of you are saying that these people don't know what they're talking about, and i don't quite agree on some of their opinions. But they do in fact make very good points. For one, sending your youngsters oversea, would definitely develop the youth players even more. Even if they don't end up being superstars. For ex. My home country is Peru, and for years the national team would only have about 4 players who played in Europe, and the rest were still playing at home. Now, majority of the players are playing in Europe, even the ones who don't start. Look where we are now, 2 games away from reaching the world cup after 32 years. And second, soccer is a rich sport in America. The amount of money you must pay in order to have a chance to play at a high level is ridiculous. You look at some of the best players in the world, they all came from poor families. The best example i can think of, is Cristiano Ronaldo. They saw how talented he was and was offered a chance to develop and now he'll go down as one of the best to ever play the beautiful game. The U.S. do need to change their system in my opinion. What do ya'll think?

I argue that had the USMNT qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Bruce Arena will heavily rely on veterans again and be bounced out of the group stages given the fact that the USMNT's record in a European soil FIFA World Cup is terrible with 0W-1D-9L. That being said, three years later, the USMNT and Italy revamped their squads with youth and won titles three years later.

The fact that the US always qualify to the World Cup creates a faux feeling as if the team was actually skillful but what many people don't know is that as usual in the North is easier to get there, so you get to the same place with practically no skills and no fan base, that's why they become arrogant cause they didn't work for it, they didn't sweat it, is always easy as for Mexico, the thing is once you encounter reality and the fact that other countries struggle so much to get to the same place create superior teams, not only talking about skills but about mentality and that's the part that prevent teams in the Concacaf region to develop, so this probably is a good thing, it means the level is growing and that a fat wallet won't necessarily give you skills, perseverance and respect to not underestimate and is why this is the Beautiful Game

There are loads of great players who won't be at the world cup because their countries didn't qualify, what American player will the world cup miss? Pulsic? Not even a starter for his club. US doesn't really compete in sports with genuine global competition so their views on where they should be in soccer is skewed.

The US would definitely not benefit by trying to send all their youth talent abroad. With the exception of pulisic, who I think is a gifted young player, it would stunt the development of almost everyone else. Football or soccer as you call it is much more popular around the globe, be that Europe or South America. Hence, there are far less opportunities for Americans to play not to mention that Americans tend to start the sport later and have worse coaching means American youth players are often much less developed at the same age as overseas counterparts (Barcelonas academy starts accepting players at age 6 who live and study football rather than play it as a hobby).

i dont know quite enough about it to have a smart argument. but it seems like a double edged sword. sure they get better with better competition. but the better competition would also destroy them and not let them be dominant enough to be relevant anyway. its like sending a european to america to develop his basketball skills. sure hed be playing better talent. but he also probably just wouldnt play or get noticed because of how far behind hed initially be. its the same reasons that american basketball players go abroad to stand out and get noticed. they wont really improve there, but theyll look comparably better, and stand out to scouts as a result. it honestly seems like the US just isnt quite there yet with soccer, and would benefit far more from simply trying to grow its popularity before we start really worrying about our international competitiveness.

The MLS has become a "destiny league" where world class players that are past their prime spent their last years coasting down and cashing in on their past reputation and fame, players such as Villa, Pirlo, Do Santos, Vela, Stoichkov, Matthaus, etc. etc. that have very little left to give to the sport while the US youth remains underdeveloped and forgotten at times. I couldn't agree with Holden more in his assessment that soccer has become a 'rich kids suburban sport' where the inner city talent is left behind, there has to be radical changes made in the way the soccer is structured in this country or we are going to continue to see failure after failure, there has to be a way for talented kids to showcase their skills without having to migrate to Europe or any other countries because they don't get the opportunity here, if after the lost against Trinidad & Tobago nothing changes then we might as well pick another country to root for in future the World Cup tournaments..

How often have the US team beat Panama (or any other team) by going up 3-0 at half time? Altidore, Bradley, and Dempsey were not superstars when they played overseas. They were just average players. Stop the pay for play system and start developing US youth based on talent and potential (not the size of their parents check book)! The key to future success starts with youth development.
