The song was written about a group of women who held a beauty pageant during the Siege of Sarajevo [during the Bosnian War 1992-1995] as an act of defiance. U2 are an Irish alternative, post-punk rock band formed in 1976. They have a reputation for making music which is socially and politically conscious, and became globally well-known by the mid-80's.
