Lyrics:
Tough, you think you've got the stuff
You're telling me and anyone
You're hard enough
You don't have to put up a fight
You don't have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches
For you tonight
Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
We fight all the time
You and I, that's alright
We're the same soul
I don't need, I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more
Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
I know that we don't talk
I'm sick of it all
Can - you - hear - me - when - I -
Sing, you're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in meâ
Where are we now?
I've got to let you know
A house still doesn't make a home
Don't leave me here alone...
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
Sometimes you can't make it
The best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

They say " Time is a great healer..". that is the biggest lie and total fairytale. When you lose someone you love, you do not heal with time .. you learn to live with the loss, because, you have no choice. Love this song .. breaks my heart too. I lost my Dad in November 2020.

I came here today, after reading the chapter in Bono's book: Surrender, in which he talks about the elationship with his father and the creation of this song. I was so moved by this chapter. I had to put the book down. My father died when I was 13 years old, after a long struggle which he had with cancer. The house was no longer a home. It became empty. I missed him so much and the only place I had to run to was music. Music helped me to deal with the grief. My oldest brother bought me a DVD of U2's show in Chicago (The Elevation Tour). I would put on that DVD and just shower myself with the music and shower my emotions with the music. I felt hurt and sad. I felt lonely. But the music was always there. Thank you Bono for sharing a beautiful creation which came out of your grief, with us. Your band will always be my number one. Thank you. Mark

I just left my dad in the hospital for what will be the last time to see him. We don’t live in the same state, so we talk every day; who am I gonna call now? It’s so hard to know that I won’t ever see him alive again. I found this song to be calming as well delivering a message that resonates with my heart. I’m determined to get him to hear it before he passes. Perhaps it will help me say things I could not say when I was there by his side. The artists of U2 are truly a Devine talent to be able to create such emotional provoking art. My heart is swelled with love to be able to lean on such great emotional support music in time of pain. Thank You EJ

This song is so beautiful and sad at the same to me. When I was young, my mother always would say a prayer that she live to see her children grown and to give our dad strength if and when she would pass away ( battled cancer twice). Sadly our dad died of a massive heart attack at age 49yrs old we where all devastated. Happened to watching t.v. and Bono/u2 was singing this. Made me think about my dad. Five years later our mother died at 55yrs old of colon cancer and heartache from missing our dad. Years later, now Iam older, and I remember praying that prayer of seeing my children grown. My youngest who is 23 yrs old and she lives at home with me, they lost their dad in 2018, so I am the only parent they have. I hope and pray she oneday can make it on her own. And when it's oneday Iam gone they will remember my love and care, and how I tried prepare them for life. Love mom💘

Dang. This song always moved me in a big way. And now my own father is very ill. Never imagined this song could move me any more than it originally did, but this time it put my soul in a new dimension. And I see in the previous comments it obviously moved many a person. I'm always so grateful when artists can put into words and music and harmony, the feelings that the rest of us wish we could form into sentences and communicate. I don't have that skill, but grateful others do. It brings people together, knowing that some truths and experiences are universal. We're all so alike in how we feel.

I am listening to this song a lot now. My father passed away yesterday from complications from Cancer, and it has been really difficult. My father and I have been longtime U2 fans. Also if I'm not mistaken this song was written in memory of Bono's father that also passed from Cancer.

I can relate in so many ways. Sucks when you have a parent who’s so dysfunctional and yet you love them but know that the relationship will always be that way. Time is a great healer but will never truly heal that person so the cycle continues on even if you feel like you’re in a good place with them. Yet you still love them no matter what. A very difficult situation for sure.
