The snippet Bono plays and sings at the beginning is probably an improvisation, because as you can see in the background there is something not okay with Edges guitar, and I think this is what Bono sings about: "electrical outputs" and power outage". My opinion is that The Edges guitar had some electrical issues, but fortunately it got solved right before The Fly could have been flown away :)

For me, U2 have never been able to recreate that raw, intense feel of 'The Fly' in their live performances. Always been too commercial sounding when they've done it live. Something tells me Daniel Lanois who produced the song, had a lot in making it an amazing song.
