"Cost overruns and disappointing performance killed the replacement, so we'll have to rebuild and upgrade what we have as a stopgap until they figure out the issues." Oof. That's an engineering mood if I've ever heard one. One that always ends up with you being stuck with your stopgap for a long time because it's "good enough" that no one wants to invest in a replacement. Usually it is not, in fact, good enough and you end up constantly patching together a literal dumpster fire for however long it takes the higher ups to realize that, but sometimes, just sometimes you end up with a real gem like the Mistaya.

Sounds a bit like the C-130 to me.
@DocWolph3 жыл бұрын
That seems to happen when you are not at actual war with anyone that pushes the existing design to the breaking point. The US would not still be flying warplanes designed in the 1970s and then replacing them with wildly overbuilt, more expensive (per unit and for the entire program), somehow less capable replacements, if we were at war with enemies that forced Govt and Engineers to saw "This is NOT good enough".
@OneOddFellow2 жыл бұрын
@@DocWolph wildly overbuilt, more expensive (per unit and for the entire program), somehow less capable replacements Why do I get the sense you're referring to the F-35? Assuming that you are, then you might be interested in knowing that the same arguments: "overbuilt, expensive & less-capable than the old stuff" were hurled at the F-14, F-15 & F-16 as well- largely by the same crowd that despises the F-35.
@DavidRichardson1532 жыл бұрын
@@OneOddFellow As someone who started off with such a hatred of the F-35 (I still kind of do, but nowhere near as much as before), the F-15 and F-16 do not quite fall under that same past hatred. Well, to be more accurate, the F-14 received the most hatred of the ones listed, though it was largely due to its radical design that incorporated automated variable swept wings. The F-14 was actually the first warplane in service in the US armed forces to be built concurrently - i.e. before testing the designs were complete...just like with the F-35 (and the biggest reason of my own personal hatred of it). Throughout its service, the F-14 regularly suffered breakdowns, especially in its wing-sweeping mechanism and engines. It was a part of why the F-14 was eventually decommissioned and replaced with what can be considered another stopgap measure, the Super Hornet (the F-35 failing to deliver on its promises at the time also forced development of the Super Hornet, hence why the argument and hatred is especially loud with it). Just like the F-35, problems with the F-14's initial designs were found after production began, though unlike with the F-35, there was no clause in the F-14 contract that had the Department of Defense or the USN pay to fix every single problem found in the F-14 - they still paid to stockpile the new upgraded parts, namely the engines, but not for the repair or upgrade process itself, for that fell onto Grumman. Plus, the F-14 had one of the best long-range air-to-air missile systems fielded up to that point (and some argue ever), which proved from the beginning to be quite effective and reliable. The same could not be said for the F-35's systems (even its stealth suffered problems). In fairness, the F-35 has finally begun seeing improvements, but it still has a ways to go to even approach that of the F-14. The F-15 was not that much of an improvement, or at least its design was nowhere near as radical as some other proposals, so while it too received its share of criticism and hatred, it was quickly recognized as a much more stable and more maneuverable design than that of the plane it was replacing, the F-4 Phantom II (the F-15 replaced the USAF's F-4s, while the F-14 replaced the USN's). The F-15's comparatively simpler design garnered more approval amongst the criticism and hatred, so it was able to accepted without any significantly egregious scandals. The F-16 was different from the others. It was designed as a lightweight fighter, meant to be a rapid responder and serve to complement larger and heavier fighters like the F-14 and F-15. Unlike with the other aforementioned planes, its smaller and lighter design contributed to a much lower overall cost, though it came at the expense of endurance, hence why you rarely, if ever, see an F-16 sent out on a combat mission, even a basic CAP, without external fuel tanks. Still, the F-16 was a more cost-effective plane, at least when compared to the F-14 and F-15, but it faced its own scandals in regards to its main rival, the F-17 Cobra, which became the basis for the F/A-18 due to the F-16 not being able to be adapted for the USN. In the end, all three planes still performed at least on the same level as their predecessors, so while the "overbuilt, more expensive, and less capable than the older stuff" argument did come up, it was largely silenced by their combat performances. This is partly why I have softened on the F-35, as it has yet to face any near-peer aircraft in combat, and frankly, I would rather see that it never does (that is a particularly expensive final test for anything). Granted, the potential outcome of F-35s regularly failing to perform, including being shot down with any degree of regularity, would have been an extremely effective kick in the rear to fix its problems much sooner, but with much higher sunk costs into it as well as the truly massive costs for each one, I would rather not see it happen. Couple that with differing approaches to stealth and the possibility of an enemy obtaining sufficiently intact remnants of the F-35 and thus countering or even reverse-engineering its more proprietary stealth features, and you face a potentially serious problem with fielding the F-35 in combat. Thankfully, this possibility has been enough to spur at least some of the improvements and upgrades that have since gone into the F-35, but as I said, it still has a long way to go.

I think it fits more in line with the Pelican. The pelican is used for the same thing, is equally modular and adaptable, and it’s been in service for over 150 years. The warthog is the definition of bad design. We have more capable and competent military vehicles in modern times. Using the warthog just makes the UNSC look stupid. If you want to see a ground vehicle with a similar feel then look at the alliance mako tanks. They’re everything you’d want in a ground vehicle. They’re fast, durable, deadly, and easy to deploy. They also have a similar design ethos of multi-functionality and modularity like everything else in the alliance military
