it's because players are seeded in tournament based on how well they've done previously and istudying is really inconsistent. so his seeding doesn't really reflect how good he can be....also istudying would probably place better in tournament if he picked up secondaries for greninjas bad MUs.. it seems he's only consistent because of certain MUs

Looking back on smash 4 tournaments This game feels slower in retrospect. It's gameplay is one of the few sequels in the smash series, it feels like brawl in many ways except for less technical skill, and more of punish game That's fine though, still fun to watch with some great matches 👌

Ally's biggest shortcoming, I think, is that he gets too predictable. He falls into the same direct action patterns over and over again, and his opponent is able to adapt and punish him for it. He's still way better than I could ever hope to be, but I think Ally could do even better if he tried adopting some bait-and-punish into his gameplay.

I just don't get it. Why is this acceptable for spectators? In a "climactic" game 5 I saw nothing but single stray hits, a bunch of shields, freaking dodge rolls, and no action. It's not exciting at all. Can someone explain why this is any good for spectators? There aren't anywhere close to as many hard punishes because defense is so heavily prioritized. There are no risks taken by the players. It's clunky and slow, neutral is just fishing for grabs, this is a mess just like Brawl was, but without tripping. And this is supposed to be the hype match! Please, if there's something about this that I'm missing, explain to me why this game is fun for spectators when I could watch Falcon dittos in melee instead, where there is C R A Z Y offense, movement flying all over the place, risks taken all the time, and hardly any boring defensive play.

You know what has lots of tension and mindgames and is also dreadfully boring to watch? chess. Nobody watches chess but chess players. How can smash 4 grow as a competitive scene without spectators? It can't be anything more than a niche scene, and it's due to flawed game design. FGC players are right when they bash smash as being a "party game" smash 4 is just not meant to be played like this.

Sure, it gets viewers, but a viewer is not necessarily a spectator. That's why it's a niche. People can watch a football game, or a hockey game, and without having played it or even knowing the rules, they can see the action, there are risks taking place, it has "hype" that extends beyond the niche group of players and die hards that watch it. Melee and League have that hype, you can see flashy things happening, you can see risks being taken, even without knowing what's happening on the screen. Those spectators are what separates chess from football. The difference between multi million dollar enterprises and your local chess club. League has ascended that niche. Melee is on the way, since the ratio of spectators to players is now skewed to having more spectators. Smash 4 does not have that. It's not even trending in that direction. It's a niche scene, and because the game is designed to support cautious, defensive play, it likely won't ever attract casual spectators, a necessary component of a functional sport. Real life sports have an edge, they can change rules every season to create a more exciting on screen product. Esports don't have that luxury, smash 4 won't suddenly allow ground speed and momentum to transfer into your jump, for more fluid and fast paced movement. It won't raise the amount of shieldstun you take when your opponent hits your shield, giving more incentive to pressure your opponent's shield, and actually take the offensive (you know, something flashy and exciting that attracts spectators). Dodge rolling won't suddenly have less intangibility, making it possible to react and punish without literally reading your opponent's mind. Ledge trumping won't be altered. Air dodging will always be free, and low risk. The game is not suited to high risk, offensive, flashy play, and is just more boring to watch from a spectator perspective.

You can step off your high horse. You and I both know that defensive options are much lower risk than flashier offensive options in smash 4. There is almost no lag when you block an attack on shield, you can release shield and punish your opponent before their attack cool down has even finished. Why bother even approaching? You know dodge rolling is overpowered. You know movement options are limited. You speak as though I have no idea what I'm talking about. You're wrong. My quip about the FGC not accepting smash bros because it's a party game was entirely unrelated to my larger point, that this game is poor for spectatorship. You missed the point entirely. I asked why this game is good for spectators, and while the scene is admirable, there is no dedicated spectatorship. Melee has dedicated spectators, people who maybe played casually but not necessarily. League definitely has that. People who watch smash 4 are smash 4 players. You will not find a group of dedicated spectators. You obviously have never been to a sports bar if you believe there are no sports that exist where the spectators have no foundational understanding beyond the absolute basics. These dedicated casual spectators exist in all successful sports. They're the lifeblood, they buy tickets, they keep the scene alive. Smash 4 does not have that, and I fear it never will. I came to this video because a close friend and smash 4 player sent me here, saying it was the hypest set of the event. I could find you a set between 2 melee players who drowned in pools at UGC, but there was faster paced action on the screen, it was more exciting. Melee is not perfect. Wobbling sucks, but there is no perfect sport. Not a single one. The issue is that wobbling, while an antihype option, is an offensive option. At the very least, the wobbling player is encouraged to be offensive, because you won't catch someone by just dodge rolling and holding up the shield. But please tell me all about how smash 4 rewards offensive, spectator-friendly play though, oh wise sensei, since you seem to understand this sooo much better than me.
