3:49 Yeah, this is a big problem with maps of the colonial era Americas. People show maps dividing the land among the British, French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc., but those maps usually only reflect European/Euroamerican international law, not actual control. Much of the Americas was primarily dominated by native groups (and also was generally rather anarchic) until the mid-to-late 19th century.

I think it's a mistake to say the UN consensus defines what is or isn't a legitimate government. Politicians play games. Who do the people of an area look to as their leaders? In one sense that makes it a real government of a real country. For instance, Taiwan has been separate from China longer than North Korea and South Korea. Both of those splits are due to civil wars. Everyone knows North and South Korea are separate countries... yet the leaders of each could still claim the right to "take back" the other half. But to South Koreans, the North Korean government is a scary foreign power. To North Koreans, happy or unhappy they know that they are definitely not part of South Korea. The situation with China and Taiwan is almost identical.

Problem is who decides on scale at which to cut. Countries are not 100% homogeneous. People move all the time. People go abroad for work, to start family, they are displaced, and so on. I went to neighboring country to study. And there were thousands of students from my country to the point that we were pretty big minority of large city. There are like 30 million Kurds which is more than population of 150 regular countries in the world. Yet they are just minority in their respective countries. There are dozens of countries that have less than 1 million people. Yet, in some big cities that have 10+ million agglomerations, you can easily have 1 million foreign workers there. And countries with 1 billion people would look at you like “why they f*ck are you talking about independence for 0,1% minority”. Not to mention, there is no agreed upon definition of rightful owners of land. In some countries, your family can live there for 4 hundred years and you will still not be called native, while in others you can came there and after few decades you can complain about “foreigners”. That’s why it all boils down to what other countries in the world agree with.

09:10 "Is Ukraine ever going to get crimea back?" That thought is worried Putin. He thought eventually the Ukrainians would be strong enough to attempt to re-capture Crimea and the Donbass, and if they were in NATO it would make things even more complicated and dangerous. So Putin thought, "well, if I am going to have to fight them sooner or later, I might as well just fight them now before they are in NATO, and finish the Ukrainian question once and for all".
@harrybalanovsky21692 жыл бұрын
I think you should go to Crimea and ask by yourself, would they like or let current Ukrainian government to take them back. Russians took it without single shot, remenber? Same goes for many settlements on the East right now...
@adrianthoroughgood11912 жыл бұрын
Yes. Anyone sensible knows that NATO is never going to invade Russia, but if Ukraine joins NATO then it is too late for Russia to invade. But Ukraine would not be allowed to join NATO while there are outstanding border disputes because NATO doesn't want to accidentally get into a war with someone, especially Russia. Ukranian would have to other take back it's former territory by force, or cede it, or come to some kind of peace treaty establishing a compromise. Since Ukraine is almost certain to not be able to force Russia to leave Crimea or Donbas that means that Russia effectively already had a veto about Ukraine being allowed to join NATO anyway. A cynical person might suggest that Russia deliberately stoked and supported the Donbas rebellion in order to block NATO membership, and the same for those places in Moldova and Georgia etc.

10:20 These are the Zapatistas in case you want to look up what’s going on there. They’re essentially libertarian socialist (or basically anarchist). In case you don’t know, anarchists aren’t people that want chaos. Anarchists are critical of states, governments, and power itself, and believe that society should organize itself from the bottom up rather than the top down. Left wing anarchists want democracy not just in administration but in the workplace as well. Anarchists have actually been relatively successful in some places, as is true of this case. Right wing “anarchists” (anarcho-capitalists) on the other hand are lame. Capitalism is flawed already, and in a society with no government to keep corporations in their place, corporations would become governments, non democratic ones at that. The most successful example of a proto-ancap society was Iceland, but things devolved into conflicts between local warlords and then the people invited Norway to annex them.
