Professor needs somebody to teach him a few things. First of all capturing Bakhmut is not some kind of strange obsession for the leader of Wagner group. It is currently defacto THE MOST important city for both sides in this conflict. There are a lot of big direct roads going toward any major city in Donbass including M03 highway towards Kharkiv. Loosing of Bakhmut for Ukrainians means huge logistic problems along M03 highway towards north to Izyum and Kharkiv and also towards south in a direction of Ukrainian strongholds around Donetsk. With enough troops in Bakhmut area Russians could encircle those strongholds because there no solid defensive fortifications in that direction. Depending on a strategic priorities and with enough troops Russians could also use Bakhmut as a starting point for a big offensive towards north. With Izyum front troops combined they could attack and encircle and capture Krematorsk area. So capturing of Bakhmut is of a huge strategic value for Russians and saying that it is only a Wagner leader's obsession is complete BS.

@@Celticowl4136 Strictly from a Russian national security perspective, Russia should immediately call it quits and withdraw. They are losing dangerously many professional soldiers and modern military assets. They won't because withdrawing is against the interests of the current Russian regime. They are quite literally throwing the future of their own country under the bus so they can remain in power for a couple of years longer. As far as I'm concerned, they are traitors to Russia.

Zelensky called up new conscripts in Oct when in Sept he said no new ones would ne needed. Undoubtedly Ukrainian casualties are probably higher than we think. The % of the electrical grid in Ukraine destroyed went from 40% to 50% recently in about two weeks time, so it will no doubt be through the roof in December through February. With Republicans taking over the House in January 2023 and given polls (reported by Newsweek showing most independents and Republicans don't want continued funding for Ukraine), no doubt aid will be cut by the House.

Modern warfare is extremely complex, even without the fog of war. The Germans were the first to organize a combined arms operation. Aircraft, artillery, armor and infantry attacking at once, blitzkrieg. It worked in Poland and France, but the eastern front was simply too complex for pre-computer days Computers have made more things possible and more things complicated. It takes years to train even good ppl in the electronic systems and as wells the old fashioned tactics and leadership. This is why the Russians have stagnated for a year now.

@@irvhh143 The Germans applied combined arms in WW2 , however it was the British in the battle of Cambrai France in WW1 who used the tactic of combining artillery , armour , infantry and air craft to successfully defeat the Germans . No doubt the Germans borrowed that tactic in the next war .

@@irvhh143 The concept of combined arms really goes back to ancient times ie infantry , catapults( artillery ) , cavalry and archers . Yep , today manpads have the ability to nullify air attacks etc , still the combination of coordinated arms on the battlefield and smart planning can be very effective -the Ukrainian's have done very well with such methods despite everything the Russians have thrown at them , who on the other hand have opted for shock and awe methods .

"Why is the Wagner group fighting for Bakhmut"? Nobody knows. Western tacticians say it has no value other than it could be announced as a "Victory" by Putin to the Russian citizens. It has very little strategic or tactical use to the Russians, it's just a meat grinder for them.
