Hello, I am from Ukraine and I can say that this is a MRE for the rear in the army, so it is quite limited. You can try "Reinforced mre" and it has a flameless heater, chewing gum, chocolate, other types of jam and other things. The reinforced MRE is for use on the front so there is everything you need for the whole day. Each MRE also has a menu number. In general, there are many such types of different menus and each has different foods such as borscht and different meat with different side dishes to choose from)

I had a 2022 ration with canned beef buckwheat, beef barley, beef jelly, all delicious, none available in five of the most popular European markets in Brooklyn. Where can you get this stuff for less than $28-44/can on Amazon or eBay? It should be distributed here. Cans or retorts. And cost $3-6 or so. But though there is tushonka and goulash in cans, and a pork and jelly product, I have not yet seen all of this. However, there is a store called Tashkent which I did not go but that is the last real hope.
@pierredunn682 жыл бұрын
as a Ukrainian, I can tell you that, that porrige is exactly how it is supposed to be, no spices, not the highest quality of grain, just plain porridge with plain meat, I personally hate it, but it is a good replica, so to speak, of actual homemade food. I am glad our soldiers are so well fed. Its cool to have sweets and all that fancy stuff, but MRE is meat to feed soldiers, not children, thats still a quite pleasing MRE, I would eat that for sure. Thanks for your review, very informative.

As an American who never had such a thing before, I had canned beef and buckwheat porridge, beef and barley porridge, and beef and jelly, as well as some kind of Pate, in a 2022 Ukraine ration, and I thought they were all unimaginably delicious. Like a 350g can of beef buckwheat kasha. Or barley kasha. This one has some nice alternatives too. The biscuits were bleachy stale after at least a year. Can't find it anywhere. Even at European groceries -Russian, Ukrainian, Polish. Would stack cans of that stuff especially if there are other options to mix in.

In some parts of Eastern Europe it's a local practice/tradition to brew strong black tea pyt a spoonful of jam in the mouth and drink the tea through it
@vladkudrya9615 Жыл бұрын
It is called to drink in a "prikusku". This is when you put something sweet in your mouth and drink strong (very strong tart) tea without sugar. This is how I like to drink tea.
@naiven469312 күн бұрын
Regarding dried bread. In Ukraine, we have a culture of eating "rusks". This is a Slavic analogue of chips, a local snack. Usually in stores they come with different flavors and spices. It is this dried bread that is usually crumbled into soup or other dishes with gravy to soften the bread. This makes the dish tastier and more satisfying
@naiven469312 күн бұрын
And you can add jam directly to tea, it's also quite tasty.
Ukrainians definitely emphasize hearty meat and veggies even at breakfast. Seems most of the other rations are mostly carbs and sugar. Seems like this would be a better start. No frills but gets it done.

Those larger retort pouches inflate like that when heated pretty frequently when you heat them very thoroughly. It's a result of the fluid inside letting off a little bit of steam as the liquid comes to a simmer/boil.

That's not coffee, it's coffee substitute. You break the bread into smaller pieces and throw bread into soup so it soaks up and then eat it. Honey is natural, usually you put it on crackers and eat them with tea. The meals were different - rice and vegetables soup and wheat poridge for dinner, and potato with vegetables for supper, but meat and seasoning are used the same, therefore they kind of taste similar. Rations are not fancy, but cheap and healthy, natural, little sugar.

I like some of the Northern European rations, but most I find too greasy. They also seem to have a very limited menu, alot of Kasha and porridge style meals, and fatty meat products. I guess that it's a great way of putting in the calories, and the fat would be totally appreciated in the cold. Either way they are huge and very filling. Never tried any Ukrainian rations yet, but they seem very reminiscent of Russian or Polish rations. Not having had any Ukrainian rations I find your review is very interesting. LoL 3,000K calories would mean 3,000,000 calories. K means thousand. That calorie count is probably not correct. They are probably counting the sugar too. Named meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) is mostly of Western Europe origin as opposed to some Southern and Eastern regions where the rule is eat what you can, where you can, when you can, if you can even find some food. Our concept of dining is so spoiled. Experienced users of this ration will probably be doing mix and matching of the package contents. The lack of vitamins is a concern (C, D, etc.). So is the large not needed bulk of the package. Beef jerky,, honey packs, and tea, maybe some chocolate bars would give more protein with less bulk. Figure each soldier should have 3 days of rations with his sleeping bag and other kit items in their pack. These large ration bags could force a decision of just bring 1 days ration, or leave the sleeping bag and the change of socks and underwear behind. LoL
