We just found your channel and wanted to say thank you. We are in the early stages of opening our leather works and you have helped us understand how to do certain things. You have explained things perfectly and easy to follow

We lost our tack in a fire and I'm off to make my own leather bosal hangers using bleed knots, love this channel, I wish I'd found you years ago. Then its back to Scotland in the New Year to see what else is needed that I havent already made out of webbing etc. I'm determined to get good at this, not like making whole bridles maybe but you never know! I invested in a hammer like yours and some edging tools and even some stamps. I'm just doing it the cowboy way with an exacto knife or similar and just slit as opposed to punch the leather as its 2.5mm thick and 1/2" wide, cowboys use latigos which are about the same width, I have an array of pliers etc so am looking forward to making some stuff, I might put a browband and even a throatlash on the basic headstall if I enjoy doing it, I'm sure I will. I saw another cowboy putting a throatlash on to keep the bosal hanger away from the eye because the button bits on bosal nosebands can make the hanger lie quite high so I was thinking a throatlash, obviously round the crown and through the browband to pull the hanger down to the 'normal' headstall position. We will see.

The width of the leash in this video is 3/4" the length can be what is best for you. The crew punch i used was a size 38 this is about an inch / 2.5cm . These holes have to be big enough to get the width of the leather through. They can be bigger if you like.If you don't have a crew punch cut the holes with a knife then punch a hole at both ends to stop the leather tearing. At the handle end The hole start 3/4 inch in from the end. The next hole starts at 17.5 inches / 44cm.At the trigger hook end the first hole starts 1 3/8 inch 3.5cm . (I did the handle end different from the trigger end they don't have to be different) This hole length is bigger to get the handle through it . I made this hole length 1 3/8 / 3.5cm long.The next hole starts 4.38 inch 11cm then leave a gap of 3/4inch / 2cm for the last hole.These measurements can vary depending on the width and leather you use

How many ounces is the leather you use ? Thickness
@UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure in ounces. We measure thickness. I use 4 mm thick

Thank man! My dog's leash dried out. It was homemade. They only push nylon leads here in USA.
@UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk7 жыл бұрын
An2oine to stop it drying out put leather oil on it. I use cheap vegetable oil and tallow fat. This is what my leather suppliers use when finishing the leather. Also if they are hard to buy. You should make them and sell them

I don't make anything at all. I retired 2 years ago and only teach now. When I was working I made English type saddles. I also travelled the world teaching and selling advice to companies. I do these videos to help people all over the world who can not get this education at a school.You should have ago at making leads. They are easy to do and working with leather . Is something that you will enjoy doing.

@UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk6 жыл бұрын
I try to do both measurements metric and inches. I tend to do more in inches because that is what I know best. I think, in my newer videos. I started holding the items up to the camera showing the measurements better.

a 'bleed knot' is a fishing knot, a 'blood knot' is a leather knot
@UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk3 жыл бұрын
Many people call it a bleed knot many call it a blood knot. You say tomato I say tomato. I have always called my fishing knot a double blood knot . Many things have dual names. This does not make many people wrongHere is a cut and paste from the 101 knot website. Blood Knot Blood Knot What Is It? The blood knot, also known as the double blood knot, joins two fishing lines of similar sizes like different sections of the leader or tippet. It has a breaking strength of around 83%. Its name originated from its use on the business end of a Cat o’ nine tails whip.

@UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk8 жыл бұрын
I agree Kianu 20 minutes to make this is just been lazy I think it is because I am not as fit as I used to be. Looks like I have to get back to lifting weights. I will start tonight by lifting a heavy glass of whisky.
@kianucollis39298 жыл бұрын
You need to have balance when lifting weights George, so probably best to have a full glass in each hand.....Raised and lined work soon....? Thanks as always....:-)
@UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk8 жыл бұрын
ah that might be the reason I fall down when drinking whisky. My balance is out because I only have one glass.
