"employees don't leave companies. they leave managers." and it's true. I strongly believe that having a manager who has your back and will propel you forward in your career can make all the difference between sitting in a car in traffic and a rocketship going to the moon. (agh such a tech thing to say, i'm sorry x_x). pls pls pls do both of us a favor and have a deep career development conversation with your manager asap. you deserve to blossom, to get credit for all your hard work, and to get to the next level. i'm rooting for you! let's make 2022 our career glow up year together!

What level of a the question "Why?" do we want to get to? I get that it might be too personal to share his goals publicly but it would be nice to have a hypothetical example for how deep we need to dig for that question.

I know! We only had a quick catchup, but I think it'd be awesome to get his POV in a long-form podcast and dive deeper into his trajectory. He's actually had an insanely crazy career path. He was a navy seal, went to MIT for his MBA, worked at deloitte > google > tiktok (where we met) and now is Sr Director at Patreon. Super cool and grounded guy.

And everybody’s different. The “why” is personal for everyone. My drive and philosophy of living my life may be completely different from his. A lot of us are just working to earn money and we make up the motivation along the way.

The why is so important and I think the level of depth of your answer is something that is personal. If it "feels" like this is the right answer than it probably is. If not, then it isn't. For me I just knew intuitively when my answer was far to surface level to be a real answer to that question.

for real!! so many people tryna downplay us based on preconceived notions. one of the most profound things i've read this past year was this: "Talent. Don't bother about whether or not you have it. Just assume you do, and then please forget about it. Talent is merely one of those convenient words (like gifted or endowed), that we use *after* someone has become accomplished. There is simply no way to detect it *before* the fact, or when someone is grappling with the learning process. It is simpossible to predict when or if mastery will click into place. The only time we can be comfortably sure about high skill is when we finally go toCarnegie Hall and hear our little cousin Charlie play the Mendelssohn violin concerto for the second time. The first might've been an accident." I think far too often people judge ourselves before we even unlock what we're truly capable of. And tbh, that perceived judgment keeps us from believing that we can do it. I felt this a lot going through different managers who had a different picture in mind when they think of Silicon Valley leadership. But this year, I'm doing my best to believe that I really can really go after my dreams. I'm entitled to that much. Sory long reply for a short comment. Thanks for calling this quote out!!

Chloe! I’m so happy I found you! I currently am 26 years old, I’ve worked as an operations manager at Walmart for roughly 5 years. I started external, VERY corporate illiterate, and had to pave my own path to understand their processes and the “why’s”. I did excel fairly quick due to setting my own expectations, but I eventually ended up leaving from the toxic and belittling communication that I got from my store, market, and districts managers. Fun fact: I never went to college and I knew I wanted something more. Like MORE. I didn’t want to fall into the traditional manager life style but was so terrified to even believe in myself. So I ended up moving back to my home state, I got a new job, If we are speaking honestly, I love my job now especially since I no longer have to take medication or struggle with my anxiety, but I still have that hungry feeling for more. SO *drum role* I am now going to be attending a university for the first time in my life, to try to become some sort of creative executive in the film industry. My long term goal is to graduate, move to Los Angeles CA, become something in the film industry and be ✨happy✨ It’s a BIG dream I know, but I’m going to work hard until I get there. Your videos give me the strength I need and preparation to stay focused on the important things, but to also take that first step! Thanks for being so knowledgeable and so damn sweet! 🥺❤️

Hi Chloe!! Your video came at the perfect timing! One of my goals for 2022 is to really work on accelerating my career and take things to the next level. I'm at an entry-level role right now feeling exactly how you described, and like you said, while our jobs don't make up our entire identity, they shouldn't hold us back from what we're truly capable of. You brought up a lot of great points that are all incredibly helpful!! Seriously taking notes and will have to keep referring to/re-watching your video in preparation for my next touch base and soon to be career development conversation with my manager! Thank you so much for sharing your insight and even putting together the CDC template! Navigating Corporate America is a whole other ball park especially as a first-gen Asian American. You have no idea how much of an impact you're making, and I just want to emphasize how much I appreciate your videos. Lastly I also wanted to say I love how you're leveling up your content creator game too--your videos are super engaging and I see the work you're putting in with all your editing (super cute intro!! lol). Hey Chloe, I started a new role last month and your videos guided me throughout my transition. I am at the halfway mark on my probation on not entirely satisfied with the job scope that they had carved out for my role (i wanted to do business partnership & development) but was told to focused on SaaS implementation. I was wondering if you have good tips on how to speak to the hiring manager on this without sounding too anxious on a role change during probation.
@chloeshih
@chloeshih 2 жыл бұрын
Hey simmy! Oof this is hard one esp becaeuse you just started the new role. I have very little context, but judging by what you said so far, I'd say there are a couple ways to go about it: 1. I think if it's extremely off the mark, it's worth having a transparent conversation with your manager about mis-matched expectations for the role when you were hired but that you're still very excited about the company in general. You need to reiterate your qualifications, expectations during the interview process going in, and also why it makes sense for you to be staffed on BD. This is really tricky and I've rarely seen it done right. 2. If you've already had a deep conversation and you think it's still worth staying, it might be good to ask how to have a 20% project where you fulfill the expectations of the current role and are able to spend time working on BD projects as well. 3. If you think it's BD or bust and you've truly tried all avenues, it may be worth considering other options since it's still so early. I think a realistic but not great scenario is that they keep dangling a carrot on a stick for a while and you stay in your role for another year or two without being able to transition over. Good luck!!

Hi Chloe! I'm starting my very first job in tech in a month. This video felt kind of overwhelming for me :( I honestly don't know what my 1-3 year career goals are or what I like/what I want to do in the future. Any advice for us college new grads on what we should talk about with our managers and how to make a good first impression during the onboarding process? Thanks!!
@chloeshih
@chloeshih 2 жыл бұрын
Hiya AM! totally understand how it can be overwhelming. I highly suggest Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans for starters. People aren't really supposed to know what they want until they've tried it for some time to understand it. I think just pick 3 areas you want to explore and ask your manager to help pair you to the right projects to get that experience. Also in your 1-3 years section, your goal can even be "figure out what i really want to do". That way your manager can have a deeper discussion with you on what that looks like

Can you do a video on finding mentors? I have had a string of bad managers and I have a hard time asking for help, so I don’t even know how to approach it since I don’t feel like there is something of value I can provide for them

yes! i think that's been pretty highly requested. i have to dig a little more since i normally find my mentors through my existing networks. it was definitely super difficult getting my first one early on in my career though. thank you for your suggestion!

Hi Chloe, inspired by your video a lot. I have a question though, after joining a company and realized that my pay is lesser than other employees of the same rank. I believe this happens to other job seekers as well, would appreciate if you could share how can I negotiate with the HR again to increase my pay same as my colleague?

Hi CK! Hm, this is a tricky one but it should be a conversation with your manager first to assess whether it's time for a comp adjustment. I think it's a super nuanced discussion. Feel free to share your question in our discord so some other folks can help chime in! discord.gg/colorsofchloe
