Congrats (again!) on the job! You said some great things and have got me reflecting about my own personal and professional development. Your words on not just making a high impact but a sustainable impact makes a lot of sense and something I want to think more deeply about in preparation for the coming year. Having joined my company at the beginning of December has been nice because it's a lot more chill and has given me opportunity to learn the ropes and be less stressed about what our current sprint goals are. I want to achieve a lot but I have to be careful with burnout and remember to be kind to myself. As always, looking forward to more videos! And you're editing with this one is 10/10! :)

Yeah!! I feel like it’s an unpopular opinion, but I’ve met “4 hour work week” type people who cut a lot of corners just to clock out and it’s rough working with them. :/ glad I’m not the only ones thinking this! I will say that there are still other good practices in the book that I think may be useful for managing time and resources!

Totally agree. I’ve also been heads down, grinding (basically since my first job post-college). Now I’m in a situation where I can dial it down a bit and not have to worry as much about the next step. Next year, I plan focus on some stuff in my personal backlog 😏

Currently navigating from the technical side of engineering to the human side! Aside from school, master applications have been sucking my soul but I'm so freaking happy!! Knowing that I'm pursuing a direction that makes me tick, all I need is to work towards it, a bit luck, and just wait... Love your video as always Chloe ;)

Oh wow - what does it mean to navigate to the human side? Are you thinking of going into engineering management? And ah masters applications sounds brutal. ROOTIN FOR YA!!!!!
@stereokellio29982 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU!! What I mean by human side of engineering is instead of implementing a given solution, I want to explore the "how" and "why" behind great designs (not limited to engineering design since products and services are also my interests). Knowing the "why” -- problems I'm trying to solve actually matter and CAN HELP PEOPLE is just WONDERFUL.
@chloeshih2 жыл бұрын
@@stereokellio2998 OHHH! Gotcha - amazing! That’s a great goal to have. I find that engineers I work with sometimes get a bit way too much in the weeds to code out every detail and not think about first principles as much. I’m glad you’re working on building your product sense and user empathy! User centric thinking can be a super interesting area to build expertise in within certain specialties. Happy New Year Chloe! 🎉 I'm rlly proud of myself that I successfully transformed my career path from in-house Graphic Design to UXUI Design. Earlier this year, I was working under a toxic environment and a manger who obviously don't know what the hell he is doing for the company. While going back to school wasn't an easy decision, working under such environment made me realized that I'm the only person who can actually make the change for myself. So I QUIT, went back to school and doing some freelances. And.. what la I'm a UXUI Designer for about 2 months now!! For those who thinking to make the change for good, do it y'all!

It'll be tough but seeing your channel makes it more bearable - read more books for self development - start building my connections - have relevant mentors! Another great video! I like your resolutions, all seem achievable and a great way to grow in your career and as a person (especially games nights!! gotta git gud). Love the idea of positioning as a 'gravitational force' in the workplace, I've never really considered explicitly deciding the type of colleague I'd like to be at work but I can see the benefits of it! Hi LifeofGaming! Ah I'm glad you enjoy the resolutions. Hey Chloe, I stopped by quickly for last night's stream which was great! I'm a software engineer (bootcamp grad) so my goals are to really learn as much as I can in preparation to either become a senior engineer in 2022 or look to move to a bigger company and bump up my TC. I really enjoy video games so my unrealistic career goals would be to work at Riot Games or platforms geared towards the gaming community like Discord (congrats on the job!!), Twitch, KZbin/Gaming, etc but that's far from where I am today. I really resonate with you on applying pressure to yourself to be productive mentality. It's hard to enjoy time off knowing the sprint is ending soon or there's tickets I could do. I actually used to stream video games on Twitch under this handle and it's something I stopped doing once I became a software engineer so it would be nice to come back to that community even for Just Chatting or coworking. Hopefully I'll get better and faster so that I can take more time to myself and to those I love this year :) Also, huge fan of alliterations with the letter "C" ;)

Hi Cindy!! :D Omg a twitch viewer on the youtube! woooo~ I'm so glad that you came through! Yesterday's stream was pretty fun haha. You probably saw my weird side if you stayed late enough. o___o Congrats on your role as a SWE and I def think it's very realistic to become senior and bump up your TC. Rooting for you!! Working in the gaming industry is def very realistic, but it depends on which part of the game you want to work on. I know you'll get there! Re: productivie mentality - sigh I know. I feel so guilty just taking a break. Last night, I doom-scrolled on social media for like 2-3 hrs and felt awful about it because I was hoping to get some work done but my partner tells me I'm just burnt out from the year. It happens to the best of us :( Let us know if you're streaming on twitch again! I have a channel in my discord server for unichlos to promote their streams or videos. always down to support the community and their ventures ~ glad you appreciate the alliteration

Heyy, watched a few of your videos and just wanted to drop a note saying thanks for sharing all your ups and downs, and thoughts in a very transparent way. As a fellow PM I share the same pain point where we might all excel at work hitting OKRs and what not but at the same time, it just feels unbalanced in terms of allocating the time to your loved one, friend, family and in my case, cats. It's almost like we know how to prioritize which task or ticket should go into the sprint or kanban but then that skill somehow doesn't translate so well outside of work. Ah, sorry for the negative energy, let me end this up with a lame joke, my new year resolution? 1920x1080 as always :) PS: When will my partner learn my love language and play games with me >"

I definitely want to create new systems that allow me to naturally spend time with loved ones. Omg and lovey our resolutions joke xD Wishing you all the fun game time with your partner!!

You inspired me to ask my wife of 15 years to play video games with me. I got a stare. You thought you have low expectations!

Also interested in your thoughts on making impact sustainably!

Omg so excited for you! And yes I def need to come thru with the 30-60-90. There are so many different topics to share out 😵💫 The part on making impact sustainably is a tough one. Hope I have more to share in the new year, but a lot of it is ruthlessly prioritizing what features and projects are most worth my time. There’s also the Eisenhower matrix for prioritizing your workload! But yes lots of good productivity heuristics out there. :)

My personal suggestion would be, don't wait for your manager to send you a 30/60/90. Write one yourself and send it over to him/her and ask for inputs. I did this with my previous job change and the HM was extremely impressed about my proactivness.

@@TechGuap Thank you for the suggestion! I will definitely try to apply it! But how do you make a reasonable plan if you don't know the context of the team or the scope of your work(or maybe getting to know it is the part of the plan but I am just afraid that the plan would be too general
@TechGuap2 жыл бұрын
@@gamebakery3090 Typically those are the questions that you want to ask during the interview. It's always a good thing to reach out for more context to the hiring manager or other team mates who interviewed you :)

Wow maybe tech is somewhat a toxic industry. My roommate he works in the same job, same position, not much salary increment for 3 years and still happy with what he has and really enjoys life after work. Somehow I always feel the need to be available at work 24/7, even when dining and would feel really guilty if I stop working for a while 🤯
@chloeshih2 жыл бұрын
It kind is tbh. :/ I mean I can't complain since tech workers have some of the best perks, but it truly is a "on all the time" type of job especially with remote work. I need to learn how to draw better boundaries there!

I really like your content but I find it really hard to just say "I want to travel the world befor it goes to sh*t", maybe let's all together try to get down our emissions and try to work on ways to stop climat crisis. You and your skills are so valuable, you definitly have the ressources to change smth in the world :)
