This was an incredible project to work on, I'm so glad you've enjoyed your experience and reading the comments has put such a smile on my face. This has truley been a labour of love on all sides involved. I like to think of the wheel as the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team wheel for Simracing rather than a replica as the word 'Replica' really does do it a disservice. The work that has gone into this has been meticulous to give the user a true F1 driving experience when paired with your sim and hope those who have ordered one, enjoy every minute of every lap with it.

This has to be a hell of a chance to kind of look behind the curtain so to speak. What we look for in Sim Racing versus what Mercedes AMG signed off on so they could release this. Comparing it to what we look at when we get wheels. We are so fortunate to live in this time where a game is so effing good. This niche hobby has elevated to the point where actual F1 engineers and whatever, people with say so in the real world, sign off on something like this. We pay for it of course, but for the immersion gamer, wow. How awesome.

As soon as I saw the teaser they put out for this wheel I knew I was going to buy it, finding out how much it cost was a bit crazy but I had savings with no real goal so this became my goal. I’m a big fan of F1 and formula cars are my favourite to drive, so for me at least it’s worth it. I think it’s really awesome Mercedes allowed this to happen, this is literally an exact F1 wheel in the hands of normal people, it’s amazing! Ordered mine right at the cut off point for the second batch, so hopefully within a month I’ll have mine, I will use this quite generally, for formula and gt cars, I have a circular rim for the others, but this makes a great display piece and conversation starter too, but I will probably get a display case for it when it’s not in use, can’t have it getting dusty!

The price is obviously bonkers... but you know what. If I had a proper sim rig, I'd love to be able to have the real life F1 racing wheel from a real F1 car and driver that is essentially the real thing. That's unique and just to know that you know exactly what it feels like when LH uses his wheel... that's definitely a cool experience. Whether or not it's worth the money, well that obviously depends on each individual and their finances etc.
@Silverturky2 ай бұрын
I think the simhub way is absolutely the best way. one software to manage everything to do with sim racing rather than 1 software for my wheel 1 for my pedals 1 for my wheel base one for my shifter. simagic has the right idea by giving me the choice with my GT neo but lets be honest. the amount of manufacturers that work with sim hub its now in their best interest to keep it going and sim hub has become such an integral part of the sim racing community as a whole its not going anywhere.

Great and thorough review, Mr. Ford! Thanks for the work you put into your videos! Happy owner of the GRID Porsche RSR simracing wheel... not missing 7-way switches a millisecond. I despise these things to be frank. The only - currently anyway - 7-way-switches I come to like are the ones on my GSI FPE V2 wheel. those are great, useful, purposefully placed, they react as they should, no false input when using the push-button function, not flimsy, not sticking out like the Orthanc tower. I saw a guy accidentally ripping off the cap of a 7-way-switch on the GRID MPX wheel, just because the FFB was going crazy and ripped the wheel out of his hands. I was thinking about the MPX when it got it's reviews online, because I liked the clean style of that wheel, but the 7-way-switches were always an issue to me. Exactly because I thought of this, what happened to the guy I mentioned... I always thought "those switches are not placed in a thoughtful area". And they aren't the placement is stupid in my opinion. The GSI FPE V2 is the first of many wheels with well placed 7-way switches AND them NOT being annoying when using them. There surely is a reason why there aren't any of those on real race car steering wheels. And I would be furious, if this particular F1 replica wheel had 7-way switches glued onto them just for simracing purposes while the original one doesn't have them... especially with the official license stickers going on and the high price tag. Another thing... I don't mind branding. In the current Hypercar generation (LMDh, LMH...) and LMP2 and LMP3s, there are a lot of Cosworth steering wheels in use. I think it's nice, that the original Merc-AMG-F1 wheel doesn't have that anywhere. But if there was any kind of branding on the real one, like a Merc star or something, I would expect that on the replica. That's why I am happy about the nice branding on the Porsche RSR wheel by GRID. And the OPTION to put a GRID sticker onto it if you want or just go with the original Porsche branding and the very neat Porsche crest beneath the screen. I do own the VPG V-PGT wheel, which is essentially a replica wheel of the 992 GT3 R without Porsche branding (and probably without license, with the design seemingly being unprotected). Some people put a Porsche crest onto it, because VPG has a space for that in the carbon mold. Some use knock-off crests ordered from some obscure corners of the internet, some invest the money into the real one... I prefer to put the VPG crest onto it, since it is not a Porsche licensed wheel, it isn't made by Porsche but by a company called VPG.... so why not allowing that to be represented? I could choose to not put anything onto it, but it would look rather incomplete. But I have the choice, which is nice, and thoughtful by the maker of that wheel. If I wanted to have a unbranded wheel, I could also DIY a wheel, which is absolutely possible on the level of quality compared to wheels I mentioned above, but it would be just as expensive on the same level. But I am glad the options for buying such wheels are growing, which is a benefit of the internet. 20-30 years earlier it would be a nightmare to advertise or ship such niche products. But nowadays two guys in bavaria can launch a premium sim steering wheel company starting off building those on their own and shipping world wide, called BavarianSimTec. That is risky even today, but you can reach far more niche people nowadays than back in the day, where you would have to start of on a national level... selling 10 wheels in Germany and giving up the business the same year you started, leaving yourself at bankrupcy, rather then selling maybe a 100 worldwide in the first year (they probably did more). Good times to be a simracing enthusiast.

I absolutely agree with you 100 percent (I thought I was the only one who felt this) on the logos and branding plastered over most sim racing wheels these days: it’s just visually too distracting, looks tacky and takes away from the elegance of a wheel. If they must: just place it somewhere that’s not so readily obvious or else they should just leave it out altogether. In this case, SimLab meticulously placed it in excellent areas and nailed it in spades! I was just wondering in terms of the actual weight: is it almost the same as the real life counterpart and was there anything else in this wheel that they might have missed out on? With that being said I don’t think it’s a problem that this product will sell regardless of the high asking price. This is because there just simply aren’t any wheels with this high level of craftsmanship out in the market place today. Very nice and detailed review!

Nice review, been waiting to see one on this wheel. A little bit funny to me, I've been taking so long designing and getting parts to make a diy version of the current Mercedes F1 wheel that now there's an official product lol. Pretty much on and off for about 1.5 years now, just keep putting it on the back burner in favor of other things, and partly just putting it off. Also some design choices are interesting on this one, instead of being a 1:1 representation of the one they've been using since later parts of the W12 I think, some bits of it are from the design of the previous wheel. Like the bottom being a ''wavy'' shape instead of being flat, the shifter mechanism being more similar to the old one rather than current, and some other small things. Not that it's a bad thing at all, after all even the real wheels aren't always the same and have some minor changes here and there, and also it certainly makes for a better official product in terms of styling. Not to mention I prefer this choice for the shifter mechanism since it's somewhat easier to service, why I chose to do the same.
@leecarllcs66192 ай бұрын
Glad you noticed the small details! We had a lot of back and forth with Mercedes about which details this would be based on. What we have here is the exact version that the Mercedes Engineers wanted us to bring to market. Some of the decisions were even made due to IP protection 🙂
@Rustler_One2 ай бұрын
@@leecarllcs6619 Ahh, interesting. I actually wasn't even thinking of IP being a reason for some things, but it makes sense. And really as I mentioned, a number of the design choices make a lot of sense for it being a finished product, by a lot of the pictures I've seen, the real thing has less polish in styling and fitment, probably cause it doesn't need to be. In a lot of ways the w11 wheel had some design features about it that felt more like a finished product, and those are the ones I notice being on this wheel. Other than the other things I mentioned stuff like the button surrounds being sunken in, and the part where the rear shell goes into the grip being rounded instead of squared off. Also I don't quite remember and I may just be blind, and tired at this point lol, but I didn't see the button in the grip. If so I wonder if that's cause it'd be a pain to fit in there or structural compromise to implement it. I could see why since that's going to be a pain for me too, maybe slightly more so since it's not the shell that provides any structure in mine, but a 6mm aluminum plate that basically goes through the middle of the wheel. That's also made it a pain for the rotary encoder just before the middle connection of the grip. lol

They did a strange thing with the AUD price...originally it was just a floating exchange rate price which appeared to take the VAT-free Euro price of about 2300 EUR and convert it, and it changed every day based on exchange rate. Then they changed it to a fixed AUD price, but it now equates to about 2700 EUR - which is what you would pay in their home country of the Netherlands with NL VAT included....despite Australia being a destination which should not be paying any European VAT. Luckily I got my order in before the change and saved about $700...
