Heian Godan - when you jump and cross your fists, as you land your fists should touch the ground as you are meant to be trapping the hilt of a sword down to the ground.

I made shodan almost 20 years ago and quit when I joined the military. I still talked to my old sensei pretty regularly but he died last year. Been doing boxing tournaments lately for fun and I found this because I couldn't for the life of me remember Heian Godan. Been doing kata again as a form of meditation almost. Thanks man

Thank you for this video. It's refreshing and memorable to see the first 5 katas again. From all the years, all the tests, the exercises, the kumite, and etc. Now when I hear the kata names and start seeing the movements, I see a color associated with the belt at which they were taught.

Such memories. I won a tournament with Heian Godan a long time ago. It's still, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful "hard style" kata ever devised. That and Naihanchi Shodan were the only two forms I would do because they were just so elegant but brutal at the same time. I also remember a skeptic coming into the dojo while we were practicing Heian Nidan and laughing at us, telling us that the elbow block and backfist at 1:21 was an impractical combination in a real fight. He asked the guy to punch him, blocked it with the elbow and hit him with the backfist, putting him to sleep. He came back a few days later and signed up for classes. lol. Those years at that old run down dojo were some of the best of my life.

Yep, that’s the kata I remembered. It’s been over a decade since I did martial arts, and I never got very far. I really need to find something to do for exercise. Martial arts allows you to do that while still learning something useful.

I studied Okinawan Kenpo Kobudo and Tang Soo Do Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan, both over thirty years ago. The only Dojo close to me that seems to have a legit program is a Shotokan studio. The 5 kata in the video are virtually the same as Kata and Hyungs I learned in Kenpo and Tang Soo Do. I think I am going to empty my cup and put on my white belt and begin the journey again with Shotokan. Great video Sensei!

The truth is there is no one set way for belt exam. It depends on your style, your teacher, your organization, and more. The best thing to do is to communicate with your school what their expectations or requirements are, and after you do that practice the curriculum to the T.
