"Plaster Cloth Mache" Daddy Goblin - an Accidental Experiment

Remember that this was an experiment, so don't jump in and make something with this method unless you're willing to experiment, too. We won't have any idea how well it holds up in the weather for several more months. I do hope to get a broken pumpkin made soon, and I'll stick it outside in our Minnesota snow and rain to see what happens. I'll keep you posted. :)
Although I was inspired by the cloth mache methods taught by Dan Reeder, I haven't actually used any of his methods yet. That will come when I start on the bodies.
Now I have to decide if I make at least one body, for Daddy Goblin, just to get a feel for Dan's methods before I make the rest of the goblin family's faces. Or should I play around with my clay and make an entire family of goblins, and make the bodies later? They probably need some pets, too - maybe a raccoon, and a crow, because they're thieves, too. What do you think?
But the very next thing I'll do is make a broken pumpkin, and leave it outside to get rained on for a few months. That will let us know how well the TiteBond II wood glue holds up in our Minnesota weather.

The water in the glue will set off the plaster and the glue being glue will give it a grip on your surface. As to waterproofing it I would use a clear matte acrylic spray in a rattle can. Think rustoleum ultra cover spray. Several light coats following the product instructions. Good experiment‼️

7:56 you can get this thin black cloth for lining clothing and other stuff, thats probally a good way to hide insides of mouths and eyes especially if you want to be able to see/breath through them. But the black cloth works well to hide things, so maybe thats a good idea if you want to skip the cutting bit. IDEA: maybe it would be easier to cut bits out with a dremel rotary tool, its a tiny hand held device that cuts, they generally have a tiny saw or sanding bit, and other attachments, very handy for quick cutting/clean up of small objects

I always add a little bit of PVA glue whenever I use plaster. This is a well-known trick among people who make plaster castings because it makes the final product much stronger than water alone! I haven't tried it with plaster cloth specifically, but I would assume it would work the same. I also don't know for sure whether the wood glue you're using is PVA based or not but most are PVA based, so this should work fine! You might try experimenting with a blend of water and glue, 50/50 or so. It should hydrate the plaster better so it might make it stronger than glue alone. It should also make it less thick, too, which could make it easier or more tricky to work with depending on how stiff you want it to be while working with it.

@ 2:35 my mom left me an odd sculpture that looks like a ghost from a dream. She told me how she did it. Soaked a scrap of shammy in water and pressed it against an antique dolls head and let dry. Incredible.

Found this by accident, and loved it. I've made papier maché heads before, and I'm currently making a sketching box out of cardboard, linen and wood glue, and then using a coat of gesso to harden it up a bit before painting it. I didn't think of using plaster cloth though. (For making expressions on heads) and I actually have some plaster cloth that I got from a hospital, - odd bits that were left over - I asked, and they gave it to me! They were only going to throw it away. Lucky me!

Plaster outside you'd probably have to spray seal it, ive been experimenting with concrete, think thats how i found this channel

10:11 fyi you can sand plaster cloth, i recommend doing it with wet sandpaper and a mask outside.

The plaster cloth is what they ise to pit plaster casts on broken bones. Very handy. I have done several plaster sculptures using the lost wax method. (Sculpt in wax, cover in plaster, melt out wax.) Way easier to remove than clay. :)

The tibond 3 glue is waterproof it's made for outdoor use. Make sure you paint the inside with the glue too or moisture might get in behind and possibly separate

What would you think about spraying the finished pieces with an acrylic clear finish- either gloss, satin or flat? I use it on my bisqued pieces for my garden and it works well for me.

I think that's a good idea. I used a matte spray on my outdoor toad, and it seemed to protect the acrylic paint from the weather. Thanks for the tip. 😊

I use polyacrylic on my outdoor painted projects and it holds up rather well. We had made a large sign that I painted a scene on and coated it with that clear polyacrylic it is a brush on and it has been outside for several years. I plan to recoat it this summer though just to be sure.

4:12 i notice you're using newspaper, have you tried super cheap tissue paper? I find those industrial toilet rolls work really well, they're super thin, so when you brush them down into your wet surface they pick up so much detail. That being said, have you experimented with sawdust? or spreading cotton threads across the wet surface? i used to use thread to reinforce material, i also wonder if using toy stuffing materials would also work in a similar fashion creating fibrous connections between the paper. Another thought is, can you make an inverted cast, then layer the paper onto that, that way the details will be on the outer side of the paper mask and not rely on the surface detail showing through the paper, because then all you would have to do is pack the wet paper onto the inverted cast and actually use pressure to catch the details. Again Tissue paper is much better than newspaper, i think the industrial toilet rolls are SUPER cheap, and if you want a tester, you can likely ask a public toilet janitor for one, they might have one spare.

In desperation of makeing clay I kinda used ur recipe lol I used wall plaster powder (15 yrs old u mind u this bc that’s what we had in the shed lol wood glue that was old too and some old paint and mushed up paper / cardboard. And I think some flower that is the most hard thing u need heavy duty power tools to cut into it lol my bf had to help me.

If you were to do three layers and then build up a layer of plaster an inch or two thick and flatten the top so it made a flat base when dried and turned over, you would have a basic latex mask slush mold. I learned to make them in a special fx class. I say basic because to make a proper, reusable one there is a bit more to it.

Obviously a mold is built over the sculpture to create a negative so it can be reproduced through casting, but they can also be used as forms you can line with different types of mache.
