An ultrasound student who offered to scan her sister while she was in school got a huge surprise when she discovered her sibling was actually pregnant. Unsuspecting Rachel Rodriguez, a student at San Joaquin Valley College, in Bakersfield, California, had no reason to suspect sister Crystal Vang was pregnant, as her sibling had asked her to perform a scan for a completely different reason. Crystal had explained to her sister she'd been experiencing painful menstrual cycles, and so Rachel offered to check her out to rule out the likes of cysts or fibroids. Secretly, though, Crystal had a big surprise waiting for Rachel, as a few weeks before she was due to be scanned, a pregnancy test revealed she was set to have a baby. Having sat down in the room with her sibling, Crystal went through the motions, explaining to her sister what her pains had involved, before opting for a simple abdominal scan. With a family member secretly recording - and college staff working on the other side of the curtain - Crystal watched on as Rachel scanned her belly. Then, when the moment of realization hit, Rachel could not help by smile, looking closer and closer at the screen to make sure what she was seeing was her new niece or nephew. When Crystal confirmed that she was pregnant, the pair then burst into hysterical laughter.

The part about having a poker face is correct. I had to have an ultrasound in prep for a surgery. The tech kept returning to my right kidney area. She said “hmmm” a few times. (The kidney was not related to the surgery that I was scheduled for.) I was a police officer, but had been a combat medic in the Army, and a civilian EMT, so I knew something was up. The tech asked when I was seeing my dr, and seemed relieved when I told her I had an appt the next day. Turns out, I had a tumor on my kidney. Very small. Also turned out to be a very rare form of cancer. In fact, years later, when I was assigned a new doctor, he looked over my file and said “Congratulations.” I asked for what. He told me he had never met anyone who had survived the kind of cancer I had. This was 20 yrs later. I really believed the tech saved my life.

Love, you are not an Ultrasound “Tech”. You are a Sonographer or an Ultrasonographer. A tech positions people on the table and lets the machine do all the work. As a Sonographer, you are the only imaging professional where the imaging is dependent on YOU! You have the ability to make images look normal or abnormal. Takes what you do to a whole new level. (Former Ultrasonographer. Best wishes to you).

From one sonographer to another I really recommend lowering the exam table; the way you’re holding your shoulder is going to cause you unnecessary pain issues. Try to position the patient lower and as close to you as possible so you don’t have to abduct your arm as much or push backwards. All the best with your career!

This is adorable. But it does illustrate why people shouldn't treat family members. It would be seriously messed up if the sonographer found out her sister was pregnant (or had cancer or another health issue) before the patient did. But this was all planned ahead, and she was a student, so it wasn't an official medical procedure, so it's okay.

Seriously? Okay, see, we don't all have flat abdomens! I'm not obese, but even at 67 my out of shape belly could be mistaken for an early pregnancy bump if that's all someone saw! Plus, because of gravity, unless you're a tight body builder or super thin, exterior body parts shift and change a bit when lying on our backs. 🤷
