I remember ripping all these .MODs from the original Star Control II game data files.. what a pleasant surprise that was, now I could listen to the music whenever I wanted in DOS using my MOD player.

I remember doing the same, and loved being able to view the sample names and other blurb inside the modules. Some of them had been composed specifically for the game but suggested as themes for different races.

The sexual-looking ship controls actually fit pretty well with the Umgah. They've bioengineered themselves into hedonistic blobs that don't care about anything besides their own immediate gratification. Having them be surrounded by things that look like sex organs kinda helps illustrate the point.

Given that those parts tend to be particularly sensitive to touch, using them for the controls also makes a kind of sense when viewed from a purely utilitarian perspective. Plus, they seem like exactly the sort of people who would intentionally design their technology that way out of a juvenile sense of humor.

The interior of the ship actually seems to be based on the interior of a heart. The big “door” in the background is a tricuspid valve, and there are heartstrings everywhere.

Playing this game as a child I never regarded the controls as being anything sexual. Just blobby aliens in the living ship. That's the thing, one can often put some adult-related humour into a movie or whatnot and not have kids pick up on it, but the kids will still enjoy it for other reasons.

I think the design they gave to the eye helps a lot. The Umgah could've easily looked creepy, but those "puppy eyes" help dissuade any fear almost instantaneously.

The problem which I have with Umgah, is that they look like a rationale-free collection of human body parts. That means they are brainless mutants and not bio-engineers. This is due to this they are shot with human player quite often as he fails to see reasoning to why not to harm them.
