Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

Just to everyone talking about a moisture barrier and sound deadener being typical in a flooring application like this… The moisture barrier and sound deadener can come as a separate piece or attached to the underside of each floor plank! In our case we got the style that had the moisture barrier attached to the underside of each floor plank. Look closely when I flip the planks over, the green membrane you see is the moisture barrier 😉✌🏼

That pre-installed barrier is designed for sub-flooring that isn’t directly exposed to exterior/moisture(think homes with basements or 2nd floor units). With the subfloor being above dark/humid rich dirt, and with the large gaps between subfloor seams = won’t last long. (Forget about the fact that subfloor isn’t pressure treated.) 🙄

That floor does look beautiful and did I hear you say you wanted baseboard? Eager to see your continued progress inside the yurt, but also your garden (s). Your Arizona oasis in the desert was incredible, so with the forest and rich soil you will have more options and opportunity to grow so much more. Have you thought about selling some of your trees to a business so that they can remove them? At least that would free you and Nicole up for clearing the ground and gardening before winter. Just a query, with working on so many projects that require tree removal to get the sun, thought I would ask. It's not like you will run out of things to do any time soon. LOL. Good luck and good health to both of you. Your a fine team!

Great job on floating, no need for vapor barrier, floor. Before you go kitchen krazy, consider rolling or sliding cabinets/island finished on all sides. In a yurt the only thing you need to afix is the sink. Being able to move everything else around (and not damage walls or floor) lets you adjust to changes, seasons, etc.

Jake & Nicole (& Amy) - great video. Is your little helper going to be a regular visitor on the channel?! Jake, you are a beast but you looked spent after two days of laying floors. It's such hard work but the floors look amazing so hopefully you took a well deserved break to recharge. We love how you include just a little bit of your personal time in each video; like being playful on the newly made pallet bed. It's a nice balance so keep up the good work. You do have some bracing but to do it right, it should be on every post. Also on the edge of you flooring where you cut it should be sealed. If moister gets on it, it will soak it up. Set your saw to 1/4" more than the thickness of the material you are cutting. I will be safer. Just saying not trying to bash you. I have been in construction over 45 years. Keep up the good work! All in all it is looking great! The Texas Hillcountry Craftsman

No insulation layer, also under most wood floors is a layer of felt paper to handle condensation that comes from temperature differences of the inside and outside AND the expansion and contraction of different building materials due to temperature and humidity. I hope you are going to add insulation under the yurt or you're going to be using a LOT of firewood to keep warm in the winter and probably have some condensation issues

Love watching you guys building your life in nature. When you guys plant your trees in ground a couple of tips for you that you may or may not be aware of. Dig your hole about 8 ins deeper then you need. Chop up a fish and put in bottom of hole. Cover with soil, then plant your tree. Fish are a good source of potassium and will aid in root development. Trimming of trees: if one trims to the bud and to where the bud is on the under side of the branch while pointing away from the trunk you will get a grater spread on the tree. Oksana and I are tree growers along with framing down here in Florida. 34 today wow it was a hot one. Enjoy the journey. Mark and Oksana

Seeing you did such a good job I have some flooring needs doing but its okay I have normal square floor sections and walls to bounce everything off. Cheers Guy and Gals, from Aberdeen in Scotland.

Floor done! Great going guys! Looking forward to seeing your kitchen storage taking place. Nice idea to use the seaweed presumably to add extra nutrition to the tree soil? Do you have a moringa tree in your collection? Take care folks.

What kind of fruit trees did you buy? Are you going to put insulation in under the floor under the yurt? Nice job.

I hope that these boards are moisture resistant, as I had problems with this kind of floor in my house in which the boards bow up and heaved up along g the seams when moisture gets between the seams. I am talking about moisture from foot travel, etc from on top, not the bottom.

First of all, I want to say that I love the truck, the fruit trees, and the flooring you picked out. I am a little concerned about the fact there is no moisture barrier and/or insulation between the floor and the plywood base? I would expect that at least one or the other would be a must since the space under your Yurt is open to the elements? I'm not saying you guys don't know what you are doing, but it might be a good thing to check on before you get too much more into filling up the inside; better to fix it now then wait and have to do more later? Just an idea honestly. I do think Jake did an AWESOME job cutting and fitting the panels, and I love the seaweed idea for the trees. Your little helper was cute too! Love you both, keep up the great work.

Laminate flooring? Shouldn't there be an insulating layer underneath?

They have soon a significant lack of logic so far. Why would they change now ? I have my doubts that that platform will last 10 years. I can't wait to see where they are going to put their solar panels, living in the middle of a forest !

Actually this is the upgraded flooring that includes the layers that you would normally apply from a roll, each individual piece already has it on the underside.

Jack Patteeuw why are you so critical? something is bothering you? 🤔They know what they are doing..insulating layer is already in the floor... it is upgrated version...watch their other channel, Jake mentioned that in the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZfNeK1rrNCsppY

Before winter sets in, get under your Yurt and isolation the shit out of it. be sure to cover the finished isolation with plastic till you can get plywood. Your floors are gonna be cold as ice, also you need to cover the outside bottom so the snow and some critters don't use your under house for a winter home. If your Yurt was mine I'd put a trap door in the floor with steps leading down and then dig a root cellar and line the outer sides with concrete blocks and then reinforce the outside to keep critters out. Your gonna want to put away canned goods for the winter, or I would. And while the floor isn't written in stone yet, you can still designate a place for a cellar door.

Buy some PVC, water line, dig a trench 18 to 24 inches deep, from the Yurt to the lake, and make sure the pipe go's at least 20 foot into the water, and weight it down, then get an RV DC 55PSI water pump and another solar panel and a cheep battery to run the pump, hook it to the pipe and you won't have to haul buckets of water to your home.

Watched a few of your videos and couldn't pick the best for this post suggestion - but in at least one episode the isolation was mentioned. Have you considered getting a ham radio license? For the USA license - which you can use in Canada - there's a multiple choice test. The long ago requirement that you learn Morse Code was dropped decades past. You won't be able to talk directly with friends/family unless they have a license; but you'll make new friends over the radio. You could easily power the gear with your solar setup. I don't want to hijack your area with all the details - just say'n that ham radio would give you communication with "the outside world" when cell service isn't available.

All of the forest animals will LOVE the fruit next year ! The deer may decide the small branches and tender shoots taste better than the local browse. If the seaweed came from salt water, I hope it got washed well in fresh water before using it as mulch. Any salt will kill those trees quickly.

Are you going to enclose the underneath to use as a winter shed/block some of that winter wind from freezing the floor out maybe? We used that tapn lock looks like it had the little blue insulation layer under it. Glad to see some new fruit trees stocking up there :) Nice. Not sure if using hay bales under to compost/heat would be an option for you either I saw on one other yurt video... or if something would try to live in it??? good luck guys!! Thanks for sharing.
