So can I ask, when you get these guys and put them into an enclosure... How long do you wait before feeding them? I know I've seen a video when you give the big blue worms, but what would the baby wolf spider eat??
@eloise__2 ай бұрын
hey kat! I've only just started the video but I wanted to comment something that I've been thinking for a while. it may sound a little odd, but im always super appreciative when you are open about the fact that some of the tarantulas/spiders and other inverts you've interacted with scare you, sketch you out, make you uneasy to rehouse etc etc. I feel that way about some of them too, and its nice to a. not feel alone and b. not be completely surrounded by others in the hobby who are so, honestly what is probably, toxically masculine and 'tough guy' about these critters. does this make sense? I really hope it does because its genuinely something I think about a lot and really admire about you! I think its also just me massively appreciating having such amazing female keepers and content creators in such a male dominated space, its deffo helped me feel more able to explore the hobby myself! much love
@F1NNIMO2 ай бұрын
this!! i’m still pretty creeped out by most spiders i find in my house or outside (to the point where i cower on countertops and chairs… which kind of embarrassing past the age of 8…). i definitely feel the toxic masculinity and “tough guy” personalities that you brought up… it can make me feel really ashamed and embarrassed of a really common phobia. seeing other people who are sketched out by certain animals but who are still willing to appreciate the beauty of the things they’re scared of really makes me feel better about myself :]
@minbari001Ай бұрын
Has quite a few inverts over the years but my Pokie regalis really creeped me out some, because she was Lightning fast and an escapologist to boot 😵💫 so yeah there's no shame in admitting it, it doesn't mean you're a scaredy cat, it's just you have a healthy respect for them, the tough guy brigade need to remember one thing, with these Critters Food or Fight the result is the Same and yes it does bloody Hurt 😆 but having said that more spiders are Damaged/ killed from the Jump Scare reaction, they're, are more fragile than you think.
@dumbitc113 күн бұрын
i completely agree and i’ll even say that the “tough guy” facade causes a lot of mishandling that just doesn’t need to happen.

I’m a recovering arachnophobe as well and I actually had a funny experience the other day. Even though I have 3” tarantulas, I got spooked by the tiniest little spider scurrying towards me when I was sitting at the table and I stood up and audibly gasped. I find it funny that my brain has separated cute fuzzy tarantulas from scary hairless spiders
@FeralSheWolfАй бұрын
God I think our brains are just hardwired to reflex-react at the fast scurries lol. After watching a lot of vids that KZbin recommended me (Tarantula Kat first and foremost) I ended up getting a sling of my own, despite never having CONSIDERED one prior. When rehousing it it crawled out onto my hand and my brain just... forgot that it was a spider. It was CUTE. It was gentle and slow! I fell in love with it. But fast scurries from other spiders will still jolt me, lol. I think that animal brain still goes "DANGER!" before we can think about it!

It's a real testament to how far you've come as a recovering arachnophobe that you're now unboxing some of these true spiders (and of your own free-will); considering they're enough to freak out even the most hardened arachnoholic 😄😄. Good for you, Kat 🙂

Actually, it's venomous! A way to remember is that if it bites/stings you and injects venom, that's venomous, and if *you* bite/eat something and get poisoned, that's poisonous! Venom typically applies to things like animals/insects, while poison typically applies to things like plants!

Hi Kat! I have been watching your channel for a little while. I have had a horrible fear of spiders since I was very small after being bitten by a Brown Recluse. I have really enjoyed your videos with Jumping Spiders and actually found one in my garden the other day for the very first time. He was so cute! My husband was amazed as I stayed with it for several minutes talking to him. He actually came up to my finger, touched it lightly and then went on with his day. I would have totally missed out on that if not for you. I have been sharing your channel with friends and family who also have a fear of spiders hoping that it will help them, too.

Not suggesting that you do, but you could keep the sand spider without a lid as long as the bark wasn't too close to the top of the enclosure as they can't climb glass/acrylic. They potentially have strong venom, but they make up for it by being so easy to keep and so unlikely to bite.
@bazzle.dazzleАй бұрын
Very true, although the container should be much wider and a little taller if you weren't going to put a lid on with rounded edges like a clear tub. Also, you absolutely could do that but the only 2 confirmed bites resulting in such horrible outcomes may make you reconsider being so flippant

Just a comment on the sand spider- unconfirmed report here. In the Navy I severed with a guy who was bit by one. He said he was told was bit by a brown recluse at the beach that was buried in the sand, now I believe it was one of these. He was from Chile. So I don’t know the range of these or not, but he had significant tissue loss on the side of his foot at his heel where he was bit and this was like 10 years later .
@bazzle.dazzleАй бұрын
There are only 2 confirmed bites, both resulting in limb loss or death. They cause open wounds to keep bleeding among other things, so it was highly likely this was not a sand spider bite unless it was an almost 100% dry bite. The necrosis was probably from a resulting infection (which is actually what brown recluse bites are misidentified as. They don't cause necrosis, the infections do)
@dijax7863Ай бұрын
@@bazzle.dazzle yeah, I get it. I have heard that before. I've seen pics online. but imagine nearly the entire heel gone up to about the ankle, and nearly 1/2 way to the toes. like only 1/2 of his foot . he needed special boots I just never knew of a spider that lived in sand that could cause this type of damage til now. you say impossible, but unless its not their area, I say it may be, nothing is 100%.
