Our government is broken, and we have to fix it. In this short film, Michael Douglas and RepresentUs Co-Founder Joshua Graham Lynn break down how our political system has been hijacked, why it encourages division and vilifies bipartisan cooperation, and why it’s made Congress so dysfunctional that they can’t even pass the most basic laws to improve the lives of Americans.
It’s not all doom and gloom. They also layout the plan to fix our broken political system, and the best part: It’s already working. RepresentUs members have already helped win more than 100 victories nationwide, but to bring about lasting systemic change, we need more people to join this movement. Join us: represent.us

Let me just say this. With the gov nationalizing industries, what companies will be left to give $ to their candidates? Most small and med businesses will probably be gone not long from now and the rest will be nationalized. You can thank CV for that, uh hum, excuse me. So, it would be wierd for the gov to lobby a candidate, right? Right. Not that candidates can't make money from these companies in other ways, but lobbying, no. Where else for candidates to get campaign $? From us dum dums, in the form of a tax credit.... from the gov. This could be the agenda here with this infomercial. Another possibility. Do you really think the gov will be honest when distributing those tax credits? It ultimately will be up to them who gets the votes and the $. Hmmm.

@@shanelewis617 I've got to agree with that. Too many partisan hacks are on the bench. Also, too many partisan hacks are on the Supreme Court. The Constitution should be the basis for ALL legal decisions, not politics or political correctness. The Constitution should also be understood based on the reasoning of the Founders that wrote it and understood in the times that it was written, not on 21st Century standards, which are insane at this point. Once politics trumps law, we might as well rename the United States, The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and allow an unelected politburo make all the decisions for The Masses, much like the unelected and unaccountable European Commission.

@@edggullion5348 Should we not try to evolve our thinking from court rulings make hundreds of years ago, in some cases? Also, all judicial decisions are made with the bias of the judges themselves changing how they interpret the law and their views on the ramifications of decisions. Acknowledging that judges are humans, limited in their perception of the world prevents us from falling into the fallacy of pure constitutional ruling. Neil Gorsuch cannot claim to perceive the world the same as James Madison and thus extrapolate meaning of the laws. Language and philosophical views evolve over time. We cannot go back to 1789. But we can take the knowledge from our collective experiences since then and improve upon the law.

America is a wealthy country., there's no need for anyone to go without food from one day to the next. Why does this threaten you ? Wouldn't it be a good thing ? America's schools are not the best in the world. Why would improving them and their facilities be so bad ? Isn't access to health care for anyone who's sick a good thing, and treatment given a good thing ? Why would your roof over your home, nay having somewhere to live be so bad? Look around you at how unequal life really has become. Do you still believe that Large Companies and Corporations must retain their equal status and rights ? You know, that they are on an equal footing to you, in fact all of the people are equal to these large organisations, in some cases them more than you. @@letitflo1462 Ok, that was a lot to unpack. Assuming that you are talking about the U.S.A. 1. Adding a million people that happens to be practicing Islam, is about 1/400 parts of the population, that's no real difference to the demographic of the country. (I assume that my numbers might be of a bit but hopefully not by orders of magnitude) Prevention, as it were, would be through, integration and understanding of your new Muslim neighbors. Given that we in Sweden have accepted about million refugees in modern times, with some from the middle East, I don't really see the problem of immigration. Adding to the fact that the USA has historically been an leading military force in the region, but not beeing accountable the the resulting emigration is ... wierd. 2. It makes me sad to hear that the humanitarian act of immigration is misunderstood as corruption. I find it more corrupt that lobbying is allowed at the extent that it is in the US. We give grants to our political parties so that they can separerade themself from special interests. Again adding a 2/400 part Muslim to a population over two years, is not a flooding, at best a drip into a bathtub. We swedes added a much larger percentage of Muslims, and while we struggle some with integration, we as a nation is doing quite well.

Very easily some of what was proposed is part of socialistic ideas, some of it is bribery while the rest removes a person's freedom of choice. Maybe you should actually listen to and understand what Douglas and the other clown say. Also you should educated yourself on the US Constitution the amendments. Going to give an example. In the video Douglas talks about states passing election laws that will also affect the federal elections, well under the Constitution and amendments the founding fathers specifically put in place that no state shall make laws that violate federal laws which include election laws. Any state that passes a law that violates federal election laws is in direct violation of the US Constitution and the Amendments and also a violation of a person's civil rights.

I have not read the entire constitution so I have no rebuttal to your statement about it being unconstitutional. I may only be a Freshman in High School, but I'm not blind to the problems in our country, and especially in our government. From the stories my family has told me, this country used to be very different. Most politicians used to fight for what they believed in, not what the public wanted-and everyone was fighting for a similar goal. RepresentUs will bring the change we need.

It has been a long time since I have seen just a positive group of people come together for a greater, necessary good. Amongst this gathering are probably people of all political positions and creeds; and this is what makes it all the more valuable. This, at last, is a principle we can all agree on. May the people gain the strength to follow the struggle onwards, until they gain a Government again that is for their collective good.

Betty H I can see why you’re concerned. However, people wouldn’t risk losing their $1k a month for months or years in prison over petty crimes. For example: The average amount of cash in a convenience store register is around $200, owners try to keep the amount low because of robberies, but $200 is a decently big score for a thief. He wouldn’t risk losing his freedom dividend for months or years over a $200 score. People don’t commit crimes because of boredom, but rather because of struggles. The less we have to struggle to live, crime is that much more likely to fall.

To help unite the people in the comments, please encourage a popular actor/public person who is solidly the other party to help with a promotion. I have noticed that when I vote in the smaller elections and the primary, I get polled a LOT. I suggest voting no matter what. I also noticed that often when I ask who is paying for the call, I get hung up on. Or they mention some name of a group or fund that can't easily be identified. Which means it could be a source looking to influence in a way that is not transparent. Then call, write or talk to your representatives, or meet with them in person, no matter who is in the office. You never know who will understand these issues if you speak directly to them in a civil manner in private. And talk to friends, family, and community members in person, individually, in a neutral place. You'd be surprised to find things aren't as bad as they seem without the internet to magnify every flaw and defect in something or someone. The internet needs an air gap. And it's influence diminishes in the light of day.

I am Dutch, was always wondering why the US democracy never seemed like one. Happy to see all of you are working on making it a democracy for the people again. Good luck everyone, may you be happy and healthy especially now with Corona with Trump at the helm...

@Bill Ruesch If your journalists can still report corruption, if you can call Trump an orange orangutan and not get locked up, if you can call out to the wrongs about gov't, hold rallies but not get shot at it means it still works. That doesn't mean it isn't sick and getting worse. I mean it clearly is getting worse and worse, apparent from the current state of affairs and something needs to be done.

@@Raren77 People criticizing without acting doesn't do anything. The lobbyists who control our government keep doing what they want. For example, this disagreement right here is just a distraction. All of us need to get off our butts and work for change. Talk to your friends and neighbors, not commiserating about how much everything sucks, but collaborating about things you can do to make a difference.

Super G Game over if you believe that. Our duopoly of two well-financed parties is “unique among professed democracies” and an effective method for controlling the population even when we’re being slammed by a 1986-present shift from our most Egalitarian society by at least one measure (the bottom 90% attained a peak 35% share of national wealth in 1986) to what is now the greatest wealth and income inequality in US history and when compared to all other developed countries at present. What is still “whole” is a corrupt political system that has us in check by stirring up conflict on almost any political issue.

simply put, more money for campaign, more advertising, more likely to be elected, the rich campaign providers voice carry more weight and gain power and influence. The resulting government formed is of the people, by the people but not for the people. This is a vicious cycle that will eventually widen the gap of the rich from the poor. The Cancer of Democracy.

More specifically: American democracy. Many of these issues are simply astounding to people in other democracies. How much US politics can be flooded with money. And how much money is required for campaigns. America is huge, but still. There is no other nation as individualistic (read: selfish) and capitalistic (same thing essentially) and it has corrupted government, weakened unions etc. And why are candidates not on public TV, where each gets a fair share of time? In my nation, we have our complaints too of course, but compared to the US...

There's just one change, at first, that the US needs: a proportional representation system. Then there should be a law that forbids the Senat to make bills and have them do what they should; checking bills passed from the House of Representatives on the constitution. And after that start working on building better education, affordable healthcare, better infrastructure, rebuilding cities, creating real jobs (not sending people to war or building another prison), improving public transport...

In this excellent video, you ask at the end, “How do we fix it?” I’ve been thinking about your question, and I have some ideas: • To revert to “per diem pay” for public servants (instead of salaries). • Set annual goals for priorities to be addressed. • Tie pay rates to the achievement of goals by evaluations of performance and results. • Set a limit of 18 years on all public service careers (including jobs in gov’t agencies). • Streamline all gov’t agencies (and eliminate as many as possible). • Sell the real estate of many gov’t buildings to help pay down astronomical deficit/debt. . • Require that regulations generated by any remaining government agencies be processed into law via the House and Senate (the Legislative Branch). Now I ask, “How do we get ideas like this to HAPPEN?” Maybe the principle of say no by giving no dough. A taxpayer revolt?

Automatic voter registration & vote from home? How, exactly, is this done? Sounds vulnerable to spoofing/ hacking on a grand scale. & I hate gerrymandering, but who decides who gets to be in this collective of people that draws voting districts? What types of measures would ensure they cannot be influenced to draw the lines in similiar, skewed ways?

Money always finds a way. The only move that matters is stopping federal reserve fiat money, credit money from being used to drive campaigns. Ordinary citizens should be allowed to give time, energy and skills to campaigns but money seems to only obscure who maybe pulling the control levers.
