John Candy started doing movies in the mid-70s, but it was his time on the Canadian sketch comedy show SCTV that made him a household name. SCTV had several comedic talents who went on to become big names in the 80s, including Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short.

I just learned recently he's the "most-burned potential host" of SNL: "Candy appeared on Saturday Night Live twice (hosting in 1983) while still appearing on SCTV. According to writer-comedian Bob Odenkirk, Candy was reputedly the 'most-burned potential host' of SNL, in that he was asked to host many times, only for plans to be changed by the SNL staff at the last minute."

1:23 -- RE: "How did John Candy get famous?"; A: Shortest answer, he became quite well known for performing with the "Second City" Improv comedy enterprise which started in Chicago but had connections to Toronto as well as Los Angeles. It would be more than worth your time to look into the iconic show these Candy clips are from, the premise of the SCTV Television Network, and to check the early work of the most talented comedic cast of all time off your things to watch, not to react to, but to watch, just for like, historical reference and stuff, eh. YT search, ‘Dr. Tongue’s 3-D House Of Cats,’ or, ‘The Shmenge Brothers,’ or, ‘The Queen Haters,’ and experience the very soul of Canadian comedy in all its low budget, filmed in Edmonton, pass me another beer, glory... forgive me, I’m a little overwhelmed by the thick nostalgia of it all... Thanks for the video Jen. This is my favorite John Candy movie. You should find some SCTV clips. John Candy was awesome in that show. I suggest watching the Hi-Q sketch, you will see familiar faces in that sketch.
