My dad is 84 years old and just retired this past year. He’s a mechanic. He worked several jobs, including time in the military, putting a roof over our head, food in the fridge and shoes on our feet. Went to church every Sunday. He never complained. Got me my first job as a porter at age 11 and allowed me to keep the money I earned unlike his childhood working in a coal truck at age 9. He reminded me of his childhood growing up in a cold water flat and a community bathroom, which he said was an improvement over grandpas who slept 5 to a room, on a floor next to a coal furnace. We had tough times and good times through the years, but he instilled in me the principals, of hard work, sacrifice, responsibility, God and Country. Moms been dead for over 5 years now, my sister died over 15, way to early. Raised her boy on my own since his daddy was in jail. My father nodded when I stepped up, but that was it. Spend more time with him now and understand him a lot better. Still doesn’t say too much but doesn’t have to. We spend time working on little things together like fixing a lawnmower or a pipe or just sitting on the porch. In my fifties now and have a boy of my own and I hope I’m around long enough to teach him the things my daddy taught me. Those lessons you can’t get in no school. This song and a few others like it makes me think about all of this and for that I’m grateful.

This song hit home a bit for me. My dad has always worked 60+ hour weeks just to keep food on the table a roof over our heads. His body can't do it anymore and I feel a sense of responsibility to pick up the gauntlet. I played this song for mom n pop so they would understand how I felt about it. My mom just about cried. Keep it up Uncle Lucius!

This tune reminds me of my dad .He was a ruff and tumble pulp wood man in the 60's.He loved to drink and fight, I guess he was having fun. He lived a tuff life and was never rich. He was the only man to knock out the entire police force in Madison N.C. by himself. He didn't take no shit. He was thrown out of the army for fighting. I guess he was a hard case. He taught me how to drive when i was 6 Ill never forget it It was in 1960.I could not stop laughing. Hes gone now but not forgotten Im 66 years old now I guess I've done it all LIfe has been worth living. In memory of Maynard nolen Peters, Floyd va. I miss ya daddy.
