Baby girl! At the very end, just before you left for your walk, you said something that had me starting totear up - you said that if a person has never made a book or a journal, they have NO IDEA how much thought and love and time goes into making a journal like this. Ladies, can I get an AMEN!!! Barbara, I understand!! I think most of us do. I'm ashamed to (honestly) say that I have been hurt and a couple of times even angered by peoples' response, or should I say LACK of response, when I've spent weeks making them a junk journal! I'm being very childish and I need to get over myself, I know, but those feelings just resurfaced. I have since put my big girl panties back on and I HAVE gotten over myself - AND the recipients of the gifts, but yeah, you're speaking TRUTH, 💯!! I, for one, see what you're doing here and I feel ya' struggling with each and every decision about THIS piece and THAT piece. Only another JJ'er can truly appreciate everything you've put into this gift. Angel, you're the BEST!! Hugs from the Midwest, USA, MomK 🤗🤗❤️❤️🤗🤗

@@49dragonflies Good thinking! **sigh** Yeah - good thinking AND a lesson learned. Unfortunately the first time it happened it was with a card maker friend who "always wanted a junk journal" and was consistently "amazed" (her words) by what I could do with bits and pieces of paper, yet it laid there on her craft room floor for several months before it disappeared completely. 🤷🤷 Oh well, it may not sound like it, but I'm over it, it's all good. Now that we're half a country apart I plan to send happy mail because she'd become a BFF, but the pieces will be far less involved and done as much - maybe more - for the joy I find in simply creating from the heart. I truly am looking forward to seeing the flip thru of your beautiful gift - whatever you feel comfy showing us!! 🥰🥰

Barbara: making any journal or collaging in a glue book takes creative energy. A person is going along thinking of ways to do something or another. And since this particular journal is special and you have a time constraint, it puts more pressure on a person. Not to worry, you’re almost through now. And he is going to be so amazed by this one-of-kind masterpiece, that it will all be worth it. You wait and see. Carol from California

I want to add to what everyone else is saying. Because you have a vision and are putting stress on yourself because of the time constraint and if you think you may or may be done "on time". The beauty is that your brother doesnt have that same vision. He has no idea what it is 'supposed' to look like. When your brother's birthday arrives and you gift him this beautiful labor of love, he is not going to just love it but treasure it always. And who is to say that whatever elements didn't get done and you feel that the journal is just "not finished " ... then finish it, add it after his birthday if you wish. Remember "there's no rules in mixed media and junk journaling". It is gorgeous and he's going to just love it. And we thank you for taking us along on the journey and inspiring us all the way through. Love you. 🥰💙💙💙

Oh, Barbara... I understand the "pressure" you must feel, even though it is a labor of love. But I'll tell you, it is stunning.💖 I fell in love with the cover as soon as you chose it... & then you made it better!. I loooooove all of the papers you designed. They all work so well together. And the balance of vintage & modern you've achieved is gorgeous.🤩 I don't know your brother, of course. Most men are not overly emotional... but I think he's gonna cry, even just a little.😉 Your SIL will be blown away, imo. She chose YOU to create the special book of memories for a reason. Because of your talent, skill, and the love you pour into it.💗 It's been moving just to watch your process. I wish I could be there when he opens it.🥹 You done good, girl! Barbara - this is truly a work filled with lots of love. And you are right - it may inspire others. For me personally, I inherited a rather dilapidated photo album after my father passed away, along with some other 'odds and ends'. I have long wanted to make a junk journal which can incorporate all these pieces, but - honestly - I have been holding off until I learn enough techniques etc., to do them justice. I still don't think I'm really ready, but I'm beginning to feel that I am getting the 'ingredients' together. Thank you so much for sharing. 🧡💚🤎

Sweet Barbara, I know your struggle all too well! I’ve made journals for others that I took a few pictures off FB to add to the journal which isn’t as bad as someone giving you pictures to make a journal. I did that for my sister in law for her son’s graduation. I was nervous doing it. Wanted it perfect. It’s a different kind of pressure. Then to get it finished on time too. Yes it’s best to walk away for a bit and come back with fresh eyes! And you are so right, not everyone knows the time, thought and love that is put into making journals or even cards for that matter. I can spend a whole afternoon making one card. The journal is looking fabulous so far and I know your brother is going to love it. A journal made by his professional journal making sister. Can’t wait to see the final flip through and also the reaction of your brother. Thanks for taking us on this journey with you! ❤❤

I totally understand Barbara, I feel pressure just making a card for someone, I can’t imagine the pressure of a commission, even if it is family! You and I know that the pressure comes from within but, there is nothing we can say to ourselves to stop the mind monkeys! I think covering the bases first and then add more details, as you said, would be best for you! You are doing much more than the receiver and the viewers would expect, it’s amazing so relax and enjoy a few fiddly bits at the end!💕🇨🇦

Don’t worry about your brother loving this. I made a scrapbook for my parents telling their story and they absolutely loved it. My only regret is that I did not record in any way my Dad’s reaction as he turned through the pages. He was so delighted to have all of these photos in one place ( instead of in a shoebox) for him to enjoy. He told stories about the people and situations in the photos. So I recommend that you turn on a tape recorder or video with your phone. It’s too good not to capture.

Oh Barbara! I feel your pain. I’m so glad you got away to relax. I made a Scrapbook for my Nephew about 25 years ago. My sister had been asked to make one for him (he went on a 2 year mission for our church). He sent pictures and ephemera (back before I knew what ephemera was) to her for almost the whole 2 years. She’s my older sister by 3 years. She called me about 2 months before he was coming home and she told me she couldn’t do it. It was too big of a project for her. So I had to jump in and do my best. His writing was atrocious. He’d gone to Germany on his Mission. So some of the words were hard to read or understand. When he came home, I gave him the book. It was in a binder. Not how we do Journals now. He had a lot of family visiting so it got passed around to a lot of people. When I got to his home, so many people came up to me asking if I had made it. I hadn’t seen it for about a month. Having the break from it made me appreciate it more. And I could see things from a finished side instead of the stress side. I know when you’re done and you see it again in a year or so, you will see it like we do. It’s beautiful!!♥️♥️♥️

4:10 Closures made of something heavy (such as photos on cardstock circles) and glued to seal flaps of envelopes from both sides are the easiest, quickest and most functional. Thanks for the reminder of that. 20:00 Photos do not always have to be rectangular they can be cut into shapes (circles, for example). Another idea worth reminding. And yes, totally agree with you that creative process most enjoyable when you are free with your choices of topics/themes, materials, time and amount of all that… But at the same time when we create something under pressure, make the deadline and manage to impress somebody with a meaningful product, that feeling is nice too. So all good either way.

You could keep them under your pillow so that they infiltrate your dreams. Isn't it such a paradox that a perfectionist is a junk!!!!! Journaler!!! ? How can you have a perfect junk journal? It's an oxymoron, sweet Barbara, a mission impossible. Your work is wonderful and no matter how many of us tell you this I suspect you'd still doubt yourself. Your doing a a great job. Crafters can be our own worst critics - always doubting whether we are doing something the right way. I'm sure your brother will be amazed by it all. Keep going :D! Btw, I agree about doing the cover first then the signatures. Today, I did it backwards for some reason. I started making the journal cover last. It wasn't sitting well in my gut, and I ended up tearing it apart to start over. I was telling my husband afterwards how I did the process backwards from normal, and that's why I felt so discombobulated lol. Creature of habit.
