When a lot of shows first started out on HGTV they were much more budget-realistic for most of us out here in the real world who aren't pulling in hundreds of thousands a year in income. None of those shows are on any more, but I remember a few of them. Now I don't watch HGTV like I used to because they've gotten so outrageous with the budgets that they say "average people" (for WHOM?) can afford to dish out to remodel a home to sell it, or to fix up a "fixer upper" or buy a flip in Nashville. Give me a break, dudes! I wish shows like this one had been around when I was back in my apartment days, but neither cell phones nor the internet existed back then. We had our imaginations only, a few thrift shops and five and dimes to shop in, hand-me-downs galore, and Woolworth's was still around back when I was first doing this - you could actually get some small put-together yourself furniture in the big one downtown in those days! We took what we got, we took our $78.75 a week take home pay (average gross wage for "office workers" as I was called then was $350 a month in Milwaukee, WI at that time) and we made it work. I love this show because it's more reflective of what is reality for a large portion of Americans. We don't need to throw out everything and start over in order to live in a functional and beautiful space.

Mr. Kate!! I live in a smaller city in Washington, and we're living in a building that was built in 1939! I'm having a hard time mixing the new "minimalism" style with the vintage feel of the apartment. It ends up not looking comfy/home-y enough. I would definitely love your help. Dejha Becker a good way might be to do the mid century modern route. Those styles of furniture tend to embrace the sleek lines of modernism but goes with a more vintage feel :) just an idea!

For the bathroom, you can re-paint the tiles. Painting them a uniform white would give your bathroom a really fresh feel and save you hard labor. They have tile paint at the hardware store and it’s not super expensive if I remember correctly. You have to use tile paint though, because any other paint will chip off. If you want to give it a personal touch you could mask off geometric designs on one of the tile walls as well.

Shop at Five Below. Seriously, there are nice things in there that will make people think you spent 50 bucks for it. Storage containers; frames and prints (over in the decor section, not the posters); Throw rugs; even small lamps! I bought a battery operated Edison bulb lamp that looks like it's from Urban Outfitters! Go for classic looks or boho vibes or both!
