This game is severely underrated, so I hope you enjoyed this first impressions video! I may have more to say about Moon in the future, especially in the larger video I have planned on metanarratives. If you wanna see more thorough breakdowns on cool gaming stuff, such as leitmotifs in various games, I have a playlist here: kzbin.info/aero/PLVzdARAAbX5FxPBAKFL83C_F88pbqNmOW I also recently put out a video on the Deltarune summer newsletter: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJbEXoOcaNmpa80 While I am looking to branch out into other games, I plan to do so while balancing the UTDR videos, too! Thank you for bringing attention to moon! One cool thing is, most of the team behind this gem banded together as an indie studio! So now we can show support and buy their stuff!

What game did the studio make ?
@Dorked2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's really awesome to see the studio still hard at work on other games! I heard that another game of theirs is going to be localized in the future, and that's super awesome.

Calling them most of the team might be taking things a bit too far. The three most important people behind this game were Kenichi Nishi, Taro Kudo and Yoshiro Kimura. Out of those three, only Kimura is working for Onion Games. Some other developers are also employed there, but Onion Games is just one of several Love-de-Lic successors, even if several other successor companies have since died.
@Dorked2 ай бұрын
@@kilicool64 I was actually watching a Thor in High Heels video and it sounds like Love de Lic's creatives split into multiple smaller teams, some of whom also produced games for Nintendo? So that's really interesting.
@kilicool642 ай бұрын
@@Dorked Yeah, Nishi was a founding member of skip and was one of the directors of the first Chibi-Robo. Before that, he also directed Giftpia, a Japan-only game Nintendo published. But skip shut down a while ago. Meanwhile Kudo was a founding member of Vanpool, who made the Tingle DS games and acted as a supporting company for other Nintendo-published games before recently shutting down itself.

I want to mention another game that I have played pretty recently called Bad End Theater The story of the game is that you're a patron at the aforementioned Bad End Theater and you're watching the performance on the stage It isn't an RPG it's actually a visual novel, but the world follows RPG logic. One of the characters in the maiden is supposed to be kidnapped, and the "evil" Overlord isn't actually evil and actually instructs her minions to avoid the humans The game is very interesting and I really do not want to spoil that you should just play it for yourself

Really cool to learn about Moon and how it inspired Toby's work, I didn't realise it was such a massive influence that it even references Love and the danger of "experience" as key aspects of the game. The fakeout opening sequence also reminded me of Deltarune, since that also opens with another protagonist ("Hero"/the custom goner character) and a completely different setup, until the real player character (the kid/Kris) is revealed through their mother talking to them in their room (where in Moon the kid goes to bed, in Deltarune Kris gets out of bed!)

Moon was ahead of it's time, the game is like the boys if it was a fairy tale rpg.
@Dorked2 ай бұрын
Yeah, even if I've only played a little bit so far, I'm already blown away by how poignant it was, ESPECIALLY in the context of when it released. The PS1 really was RPG central, so to have a game like this on the console is so bold and interesting.

As someone who's witness this game 100%, I full heartedly agree with Moon being underrated. The developers have a thing for less conventical games with a lot of charm. You definitely see the inspirations Toby Fox took from this game from the moment you begin. I'd love to hear your opinions once you get further into the game because there's a lot of twists and turns and charming characters I think you'll enjoy if you're already enjoying the game, despite some gameplay mechanics that feel a little dated to some. Oddly enough, I first saw Chulip first, a game that shares a lot of hands with Moon. So seeing that before Moon was certainly an experience. If you watch a playthrough of it, you can really see the Moon inspirations throughout that game as well. Even if its more focused on the gameplay loop Moon provides rather than the meta narrative. Only other game in their library I'm immediately familiar with is "mon amour". There's nowhere as much to it as Moon or Chulip, but I think it works to the games favor. As it can stand on its own as a charming weird little game that would make flappy bird proud. It's also typically 9 dollars [US] so its a cheap way to get a taste of what the devs at Onion Games are like.
@Dorked2 ай бұрын
It's definitely a game I'd love to revisit at a later date in other videos. I can already tell that I've just barely scratched the surface with Moon and there's still a ton to explore. Still, even if I floundered around a lot in the playthrough so far, it's been a rewarding experience.

What a beautiful interesting video game there. An adventure of kindness and saving. Transforming simple RPG elements and giving them another perspective, a quite dark perspective. But you are given the light to make things better in the world. There are quite a lot of crazy things RPG make you do. Like honestly some of FFIV you kinda kill lots of very sentient creatures and animals, like Goblins, Sorcerers, or a giant worm minding its own business. (It's just sad that their business opposes yours, so they all have to be slain. (Like a giant worm... It just want to eat, a goblin is too small to protect themselves so they need a knife and need to find people to take advantage of, a sorcerer might be cursed by their own powerful magic that governs their mind...) Everyone finds their way to live in a chaotic world. But do they deserve death?

@@Dorked Coming back here because it's very nice video. About the "scrapped ending", there are two videos in the Onion Games KZbin channel (You have to turn on subtitles) where the creator explains the original story of the game and why it was cut due to a rework of it (Beware of the spoilers). A game deconstructing and unpacking RPG conventions doesn't mean it hates people for playing RPGs. It's just presenting a different perspective. The people who designed the game worked on some really beloved games like Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger.
