I absolutely agree .. thats part of the job description in this dynamic - even if he was fully fluent - she is the daughter ... she cant just abdicate that and force her mom to "put him straight" She also needs to drive home to the husband the finer points of the mother-in-law role and how he needs to work with that. There should be no need for bad blood, they are both (SIL and MIL) loving and caring people.

In her mind, she is helping them to make it better and what she gains from it is having a healthy grandchild (only thing she probably thinks about morning to night). You cannot change her way of thinking. My grandma is my grandma. You have to adapt for better or worse.

There is no romance in this marriage because there’s too much meddling from the girl’s family. Matthew 19 clearly points to the man leaving his father and mother to be with his wife as one. This also applies to the woman who needs to do the same and live a life with her husband. I don’t think she is able to do that because she has everything done for her by her family.
@werthersoriginal Жыл бұрын
I love it. Clash of the cultures. The struggle is real. The Western husband is correct because his privacy is being invaded and the mother's cleaning is embarrassing, forcing him to clean out of guilt even if he had prior engagements. The MIL is correct because she's trying to help by contributing and wants her daughter to live in a clean home. The trouble begins with this simple culture stalemate, Koreans value social hierarchies and Westerners value "principles/rights". Legally, it's his home and he has the right to his privacy but "socially" he is bound by family values. Both parties need to find a compromise. Unfortunately, because he was unable to articulate himself, he lied to the MIL. He copped out by saying he was agitated because he doesn't want to see her at such an age cleaning the house but it was more about the invasion of privacy. Thats why his first words upon seeing her was "Why is she in our room?"

@@Lilly-ud6qsl hundred 💯% agree. You give me release from these many for me hurting comments here. I have been for 10 years for extended visits in South Korea, in Seoul, and all over the peninsula. The Elderly, especially the parents are extremely respected. When they eat they get the first serve, and they oversee the dinner, or lunches. I have been in so many families and seen their custom, and it might be a bit extreme, that children always have to obey, not to answer back to their Elders, but in our Western society it is also extremely disturbing, how our children speak, yell, abuse us elderly verbally, when ever they are angry, not pleased. It can be their work, or disagreement with their friends, lovers, relatives, they always let their anger out on their mothers, and or fathers, highly abusive language, and behaviour. Both extremes are not good. But if you live with your in-laws and don’t pay rent, don’t work, don’t contribute to the family’s income, you are wrong.

I'm in the guy's side & I'm Asian. Regardless of whose house is it & intention, it's the couple's bedroom. Boundaries! & the guy isn't even rude, he's telling it nicely. The daughter seems to be accustomed that her mom is doing everything for her before that she forgot she's already married. It's like when you're 18 & an adult, you should be responsible for yourself....Same as for when you're married, you two should be responsible without others meddling in your house & in your relationship. It's not that he doesn't appreciate it, but the mother-in-law is invading their privacy & his wife doesn't see it that way because in her mindset, it's her mother & her family. When you're starting a new family w/ your husband or wife, that now is your family/priority & your old family is the extended one. But that's not the culture in Korea, it's as if you married the whole family. People gotta understand that only 2 peoples signatures matter in a marriage contract & the whole family didn't sign it. 😅😂

Every interracial couple and their respective families should watch this to learn about the many conflicts and misunderstandings that come along with marriages between two different cultures. It's not easy at all! And there needs to be a strong enough bond between the two people to endure this. Everyone means well, but there are factual differences that lead to possibly misery if not dissected early on. Mi-gyung does a great job of stepping back whenever Gallus needs to work out differences with her family members. She cannot be the babysitter or medium in all their relationships. Gallus needs to build those relationships and boundaries himself. Especially, with a baby on the way, it's even more important that he builds those separate relationships without the crutch of his wife.

@@Joe-cr5nrBut there is a reason, why they live together. Many ordinary Koreans have not enough money to even rent an apartment, or a little flat. I have seen many families struggle during the 10 years l visited regularly Seoul, and the countryside. I always loved, how much the grown up children respected their parents and elderly in general, not like in our society, where you can abuse in all sorts of manners your parents. Here parents can get persecuted for abusing their children by their children but parents can be verbally, sometimes physically abused, no one cares.

Awesome family man is comfortable and integrate well staying with wife's family members. Grandad has dementia. My father 76 have dementia too. At least they are being spared from being asked non stop. Having dementia, you got to accept their time is near, you can estimate between 5 to 8 years or less than 5 years. Have a memorial itinerary list to do and cost expenses need to work out so you can calmly handle the situation efficiently when the times arrive. Husband filial thinks grandma should spend retirement quality time with friends and be living happy for herself. Awesome. If you too full with the rice, reserve it to make porridge in the morning (put in steamer with water in the stainless bowl) steam 1.5 hours and left over dinner can be heated up eat in the morning as breakfastl No stress. HaHaHa culture shock. Don't we now have new language mobile apps for speaking English translate Korean. This man's eftort is so cute and funny. My uncle, mom's elder sister husband from England too. He also gave up his country for his wife to live in Malaysia till old age. Very old now. He has no problem living in Malaysia. Very funny man, he can joke Cantonese few words. But in Malaysia, there is no language barrier. Almost everyone here speaks English. My advise, to prevent further stroke, buy a oxim hand massager, teach elderly to tumble at clog places and tense muscle relief. The entire head tumble till muscle relief, back head, shoulders, back, entire face, back ear, 2 sides temple (eyes side). Stroke recovery will be fast and prevent further strokes. Do it everyday since elderly have many Idle time. Eat effective quality HBP pills. I do these massage and I never have stroke even at 240 high without pills. An example, don't follow me skpping pills.

The wife is just used to the mom doing things for her. The wife should learn to respect her husband. Tell your mom it's not that he doesn't appreciate it, but he's an adult and can do it himself. He wants her to relax, not clean after an adult, like that lazy daughter. Pregnant or not, she shouldn't let her mom clean after her grown self.

C'mon Gallus, just be patient with your mom in law, don't take her Cleaning a bad reflection on you. She is showing her love for you & your wife in a way she believes love is shown.

Son is completely correct. It's THEIR house, not the mother's house, she shouldn't be going around THEIR bedroom.

Yes, I enjoyed watching this movie but the language barriers makes me a little stressed. I know how it feels when we can't express ourselves the way we really want to be understood even with hand gestures or facial expressions are not enough. Hey! did you notice how they park their cars especially the one on that steep hill facing downwards on a slanted hill. Wow! The front wheels are straight when they should be turned inwards. If & when you park your car on a hill, its always safer to turn the wheels outward to the left uphill & turn your wheel tires inward facing downhill. It's in the Driver's Manual too. Its safe so that the car will not roll down the hill or roll backwards if parked uphill. I hope this young Couple will have a nice good marriage & bond with their foreign families. It's very important because nowadays, there's so many family breakdown because families can't get along so they get estranged. May good fortune come to you both, with many Blessings & a happy family, Gallus & Mi-gyung. ☺🙏

Why does Gallus have to cook for the entire extended family? I can understand including the senior mom and dad but having to feed the other siblings as well is beyond Asian hospitality. That just too much mooching and taking advantage of Gallus. Those siblings are adults and should be able to prepare their own food or prepare food for the entire extended family too. Imagine having to do that everyday - come home from work, do grocery shopping and cook/ labor for 5 other people. At the very least, the stay-at-home extended relatives should be doing the dinner cooking instead of relying on someone, who’s already working, to prepare dinner for all of them.

I dislike living with in-laws it’s starting ruining your relationship with your partner . I respect people living with their in-laws . But i think you should focus your own family with your own house . It’s exhausting this kind of life you don’t have privacy and you have many thinking can’t rest 😢
