This commercial for AYDS aired on TBS on July 25, 1983.
From Wikipedia: "Ayds (pronounced as "aids") Reducing Plan Candy was an appetite-suppressant candy which enjoyed strong sales in the 1970s and early 1980s and was originally manufactured by The Campana Company. It was available in chocolate, chocolate mint, butterscotch, and caramel flavors, and later a peanut butter flavor was introduced. The original packaging used the phrase "Ayds Reducing Plan vitamin and mineral Candy;" a later version used the phrase "appetite suppressant candy." The active ingredient was originally benzocaine, presumably to reduce the sense of taste to reduce eating, later changed in the candy (as reported by The New York Times) to phenylpropanolamine."

I was around 12 years old when my mother had a box of AYDES hidden away and I found them and I snuck (or sneaked) something like 4 pieces. A couple of days later I was in a neighbors car, along with my mother, when the news broke about AIDS and how there was no cure for it, and I got really scared and confessed to my mother that ate some of her “chocolates”. Instead of being mad at me she reassured me that they were two different things. I was relieved! 😁

I was very little when the AIDS epidemic first spread. I didn't understand what it was. When I asked about it, my mother explained that it was a disease, but she didn't elaborate. I could tell by the way people spoke about it that it was serious. I also remember the commercials for AYDS, and, while I didn't understand diet pills (that was all boring adult stuff that didn't hold a five year old's interest,) I could tell that the people in the commercials seemed happy about it. So, I was a bit confused as to why it was scary for some people but happy for others.

For those that don't know, the way Ayds diet candy worked is that it contained Novocain which numbed your taste buds so you lost your appetite. It was a shame about the name because the candy actually worked, and it had no side effects or aftertaste.

I remember AIDS from the late 60s early 70s and I don't think they ever had novocaine in them I remember they were just sugar mostly I don't think they tasted that bad just not that good. The way they worked was you were supposed to eat it slowly with a cup of tea or coffee and it was supposed to fill you up a little bit so that you weren't so hungry.

The most beautifully timed advert was when I watched the movie Castaway on TV. In that movie, the pilot is played by Vince Martin. In Australia and New Zealand, Vince Martin was the guy who did the Beaurepaires adverts from 1983 to 2013. In Castaway, there's a scene where Tom Hanks's character finds the pilot's body on the beach. Then there was an ad break. The very first ad was Beaurepaires! So, we see Vince Martin's bloated corpse washing up on the shore, and literally one second later he's flashing a smile and inviting us to buy some tyres.

I remember when they renamed GRIDS and it became AIDS. My Mom’s favorite “duet candy” was Ayds and I remember looking at the box and thinking it would tank the candy. I imagine the 'Ayds' product was released well before the 'Aids' virus was well known. Apparently the aids virus was first discovered in 1981. The first time I remember hearing about it was in 1985.
