I am 74 and have only seen porn once, I left after a few minutes because what I saw was truly nauseating to me. However when I heard the University representative say porn was “abhorrent” and “disgusting” it amazed me that almost certainly there is no such reaction to extremely violent movies, video games nor school shootings.

@ I saw some thing with bad acting , costumes and set design. All ok. What nauseated me was when the woman “serviced” two men the both had white goop squirt onto her face. 🤮🤢😱 that is when I left. Before that while studying to be a RN in the 1970s I had seen something that Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco had produced while taking a seminar offered by San Francisco State on “Human Sexuality and the Disabled.” It showed all kinds of sex, but the different was all of that was done beautifully and sensitively and each scene showed not just explicit actions but genuine affection and LOVE. And I was aroused after serval years of celibacy.

Most universities are run like a business. His behavior is going to cause a lot a snickering and bad jokes at the expense of the university. Lots of parents do not want to pay for their kid to go to a university that has a reputation as a party school or have an unsavory reputation. So even though he did nothing wrong, his activities probably would have a negative impact on the university therefore they have to oust him. What puzzles me is his weird desire to be a geriatric porn star. He's like those people who had some success in sports in high school and then spend their lives trying to pretend they could still be professional athletes.

I knew Joe; he became chancellor not long before I went to college. At the time, he was trying to be approachable and cool, but didn't give off any bad vibes (this was before he married Carmen, so perhaps he was keeping things more under wraps). I thought he was interesting as a choice for chancellor, and I liked that he fired his spokesperson, as he didn't feel he needed someone to help him speak to the college. In any case, I was alone with him a few times in 2010/11, when I was 20/21. (It was relating to work I did for the university, I got to talk in-depth with him). I never felt weird or objectified, and I never heard of any bad or creepy behavior or any online postings before he married Carmen. It seems he has decided to be more, ahem, open, about sex and his life. What happened? When I knew him in the years I mentioned, he seemed a pretty normal guy. I'm not defending what he did, but rather pointing out an escalation in his patterns of thinking and behavior. And whatever stuff he put online, I have never heard of any students being harassed or preyed on by him.

My understanding of this situation according to local Wisconsin news coverage is that the professor is on paid leave until an independent investigation is completed. You're Able to Form Secure, Healthy Relationships. You Take Responsibility for Your Actions. You Set Healthy Boundaries. You've Able to Resolve Conflicts. You Can Manage Stress In Healthy Ways. How many of these qualities apply to people who are watching and especially making pornography? Just because you think it's fine doesn't mean you're emotionally mature. If someone wants to exercise their exhibitionism, they can do so within the law. But they cannot expect respect from the academic world for it. And a professor NEEDS to be respected.

Yeah I'm usually against people getting fired for what they do in their free time but there are exceptions, for example professors, CEOs, and some professions that are customer facing are representatives of the company and bad or even weird behavior reflects poorly on that institution. Things like being publicly racist, sexist, or generally bigoted are fireable if you're a teacher, nurse, etc. Where your biases can negatively affect outcomes in your line of work. Other than a few exceptions I think people should be allowed to be as weird, awful, or creepy as they want and keep their job

This is strange on many levels. For one thing, most universities today are liberal enough to insist that there is nothing wrong with "sex work", and that people (usually woman, as in "it's my body") should not be shamed by being called "prostitutes", and certainly not "whores". I fail to see how this case shows the logical support for a "sex worker" who turns out to also work for the university. Is this stuff OK, or is it not OK? Pick one and stay logically consistent.

Oh get out of here with that "up to lately" BS. Try getting dropped off at a school in the 50s or 60s. They'd diddle you, then if you told your parents they'd smack ya for besmirching your teacher. Both my parents went through that garbage. This is a college leader doing something in his off time. Not a first grade teacher banging in front of the class. And there are teachers that actually do have inappropriate relationships with students, and that should absolutely be dealt with. But let's not pretend that's a recent phenomenon. The only recent part of it is the teachers actually (usually) get punished for that behavior.

so do you do a background check for each and every university professor who goes around your adult children? That's probably very time consuming... and how do you do that? At what point do the "consequences" repress a person's freedom of speech or expression? I know it's a popular expression these days, but your comment sounds like the kind of thing an authoritarian government would say.
@seneca4625

Our "Freedom of speech", as stated in the Constitution, refers to a citizen's right to criricize the government or government officials without fear of being arrested, prosecuted, and/or jailed. The first amendment doesn't apply to this situation. People often stretch the somewhat narrow meaning of the first amendment into areas of civic life where it doesn't apply (like this case). @emmaponymous

@@emmaponymous this case doesn’t involve government. It involves an employer, who’s not obligated to employ him. So, while this may be a popular expression these days, it’s also the perfect expression in this example. He exercised his right to free speech, and his employer exercised their right to fire him because they determined he wasn’t a good cultural fit.

I am tired of people saying "fReeDoM oF SPeEcH" thinking that allows them to say or do pretty much anything and be shielding from being banned on social media or fired from their job. Free speech means you do not have to worry about the government punishing you for your speech or expression (granted you are following the law). For example, he hasn't been arrested or charged with anything.

Joe Gow as head of the University in spite of the desire of his small head which if left waving in the wind is a crime, is indeed an influencer of young minds, a pseudo parent. The University did the right thing. Many youth come from dysfunctional families, their need for moral adults as role models is paramount. Joe Gow’s behavior in his position could have far-reaching detrimental influence on many young minds leading to confusion and decay of moral standards. As a victim of sexual abuse I was easily manipulated and objectified by many men most of my life. I am grateful to the University. He was in the wrong caREER. Thank you!❤❤❤

I have another simpler theory as to why these two decided to display themselves publicly. And it doesn’t even require phd education or a provocative social experiment. They’re exhibitionists who find it exciting. And the more fuss, the more people will look. Whether they enjoy it is another matter. This may be why he was fired. Whether they said it or not, the university may have recognized the couple's escalating kink and decided it was bad news. Speech may be protected, but inviting your students or co-workers into your kink (in this case the couple got off on the idea of their colleagues watching them) is not. When he invited Nina Hartley to campus, he was inviting people to seek out his videos because he wanted students and colleagues to see them, imo. That is where the problem is.
