For everyone with unlimited PTO. I learned a long time ago, be unapologetic and take a month minimum (this is not even crazy for a salaried job). Don’t ask for permission, just make sure everything is in order and say I am leaving these days.

I worked at a startup with unlimited PTO and yeah sounded good on paper but in practice you end up feeling like you are asking permission any time you needed time off and everyone took very little of it - and it wasn’t like the leadership was enforcing this kind of culture, it just naturally occurred because we didn’t own any actual days off anymore, it was all theoretical. I work for a much larger company now and they are rolling it out but I’m in a leadership position here and you’d better believe I’ll be setting a good example for my teams and taking lots of time off and talking about it all the time to encourage them to take lots off, too.

The company my friend works at give their employees a monthly “mental health” allotment to use on hobbies. I won’t say the company, but she is VERY happy in her job. No work after hours and if there is a work “emergency” they are paid twice their hourly wage. Yes she doesn’t take all her PTO but she does take a 3 week vacation and two mini vacations 5 days a year. They also have a gym and earn points towards gift cards for eating healthy in the in house cafeteria. She’s been there almost 15 years and still loves her job.

Sneaky sneaky. Thank you for educating us and calling out these companies. Here in Sweden we have PTO regulated by law and collective agreements. Some get advanced vacation pay, meaning they get theirs paid in advance. Which is all nice since you get way higher pay, but should you quit, you have to pay back the days you haven't used. The other option is like your usual salary. You can take your vacation days as money but you'd have to pay 50% tax on it. And if you quit, you get the remaining days payed as a salary with your final pay.

I think part of the difference is also based on the company. I have unlimited PTO at work and they encourage us to schedule time off every month. They want us to step away and recharge. This works so much better for me so I can a balance family time, sick kids and work without the added stress of, “oh no I only have 3 days and paid time off left” when something comes up.

People forget that if you don't know your manager and/or have a good relationship with your manager, they may not give you the PTO time that your ask for off. If your manager has favorites or a vendetta, they can take it out on you as their employee. You're beholden to them now. If you and someone else want to take off at or around the same time, the manager might decide to approve them and not you (or vice versa). The manager also might decide that they need you to work on the days off that they already originally approved for you. I'm just thinking of all the scenarios that managers may use to get their employees to work more, pay them less, burn them out, and then replace them. Unless you have a good manager and a good relationship with them, unlimited PTO is absolutely a scam.

I LOVE unlimited PTO. I don’t take off weeks at a time but I schedule my healthcare & self care appointments without worrying about how much time it’s taking or making up the hours. If your company allows you to accrue 10 weeks of PTO, then unlimited PTO works against you. If your company only allows you to accrue 2 weeks of PTO then adopts the unlimited option, you just scored a crap load of PTO. It comes down to your company’s vacation policy.

@@Redallstar1 Well, I think what Vivian is saying is that they tell you it's "unlimited" but in reality it typically isn't because you can't necessarily take off whenever. And, the company saves money but not ever having to cash any PTO out. This is not an issue for me. My firm is very generous with PTO. I've been there for a long time. I started with 5 weeks/year. Now I get 7 weeks/year. Its a bit less generous for new employees... IT people were abusing it by leaving less than 2 years in and cashing out several weeks of PTO.

I have unlimited PTO, I love it. I don't track my vacation days I'm taking much more than I did in my past job. The culture here is that you notify your team you're taking PTO, you don't request it. Obviously it's manager dependent, and you could have some managers pressuring you to not use it as much. But I've had 3 separate managers here and have never once been asked to not take it. It's also so clutch for sick/mental health days. You don't have to worry about saving up your days for vacations anymore. I think the message should be to use it if you have it. At my previous company, I had a set amount of hours. And there was more pressure and when it was a "good time" to take it

Don’t disagree but also as a manager, when my company moved exempt EEs to unlimited PTO a few years ago, I make SURE that I take at least as much PTO each year as I was given before the switch (5 weeks). And be prepared with business cases for the work I otherwise get done. But I also have a really great manager who knows I work hard when I’m working and am serious about my time off when I’m GONE (that goes for me AND my team below me).

Our US colleagues typically would only take 2 weeks with unlimited PTO as they didn’t want to appear as falling behind their colleagues. The reason why people take less days off with traditional PTO is they are used for Sick days. PTO is supposed to be vacation but mothers, and fathers use them for parental leave which is messed up that they dont get adequate time off and everyone usses it as sick days. If you use up sick days and have no PTO left you cant, no show no pay in some companies. Countries with unlimited PTO are happier because people are relaxed enough to know if they get sick they cam still afford rent. Unlimited PTO should be mandatory.

Unlimited PTO is totally intended as a bait & switch, but it can be amazing if you take advantage of it by understanding that time off is not optional. It’s a NECESSITY for your well-being. Especially in the American hustle culture-in which mental and emotional health are not yet a priority-if you’re getting your work done, why would you feel guilty or worried for using your unlimited PTO? It was offered to you as a perk for joining the company, you’ve earned it (even if it’s not officially accrued by an HR software). Also, if a reason we don’t like unlimited PTO is that we can lose $ when we leave the company, then we’re part of the problem, and can’t really complain saying that companies DGAF about us. After all, businesses are looking out for their best interest…so we gotta look out for what’s best for us.

I don’t agree with your overall take here. Do you want to leave a company with a PTO payout whenever you quit? Or do you want to take as much time off as you need or want throughout your tenure with the company? The solution here is to take vacation!! Take advantage of the policy as much as is reasonably possible. Unplug. Spend time with your family. Travel the world. This is NOT a scam and actually creates a much more healthy work/life balance if you harness the policy effectively. If you don’t, that’s on you. But you don’t get interest payments on that accrued time and you don’t get that time back you spent YEARS not using your PTO. Pass.

It's definitely better not to have a PTO balance but sometimes things don't fall out that way. People can get new jobs or be laid off at any time and if the timing doesn't work out with how PTO refreshes and when an employee prefers to use their time, they could easily have a balance. I used to use my PTO two days at a time to take weekends off and then took a week off in October for a big convention. My PTO reset in July due to my anniversary date. It was a retail job so there was also a blackout between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even though I was pretty religious about using my PTO, I still had a balance when I was laid off (which was nice because it was like an extra week and a half of pay on top of severance).

So I retired a couple years early, after my last day in the office I had a bit over 7 weeks of vacation available to use, still an employee with benefits. After my actual last day I had almost 4 weeks of accrued vacation on the books. So almost 3 months of pay. With unlimited PTO it would have been 0 dollars after my last day in the office and a loss of benefits for 2 months.

I’m sure they also have a lot of other ways to keep people from using all the time. Freezing days or some sort of penalty if a certain amount is taken in whatever given bs 😂

I find this so interesting. Like if i had unlimited PTO at my current work i would look at the calendar for the whole year and send my boss a bunch of request totalling eight weeks. I have five weeks at my job and i sent my supervisor four weeks i will be taking off this year on the first week of January. Like don't let the "endless choices" keep you from taking your vacation. You don't have to be out for a week every month but you should plan a reasonable amount (at least four weeks imo) that you know you want to take off.

If it gets rolled out here, hubbs and I are both looking at negotiating a higher wage with the condition of PTO likely no longer being compensated if the position ends without the PTO being used up.

My issues in most jobs is I end up being the work horse for my teams, so it's very hard for me to take off without coming back with a pile of work. This is why I hate working on teams and I really have no desire to be the star employee. I want to take off 3 weeks to travel to Japan, Bali and Australia but I would probably be taking my work with me.

Add to that if you are very efficient and say hit all of your targets working a 4 day week, that will read in the corporate stats as though your team/department is over-resourced. They'll just fire people and allocate you more tasks.

Unlimited PTO should be called "Cinderella Time" as in you take when your "chores" are done...but the chores will never be done because the employer will keep piling on the work.

Unlimited PTO is something that looks great on paper but sucks eggs in practice. First, you don’t really get “unlimited PTO”. If you want to take more than a week off, you get the side eye, and if you’re taking more than a week off for illness, you now fall under the disability bucket, and you end up having to go on STD and taking a pay cut since disability plans only pay you 60-80% of your salary. Even worse, if you’re taking off to care for a sick parent, spouse or child, you now fall under the FMLA, and they don’t have to pay you. Second, the main reason is exactly what you said. If the company has set PTO hours, in most states in the US, companies are required to reimburse you if you leave or you’re laid off because it’s often included in your overall total compensation. With unlimited PTO, they don’t have to reimburse you if you leave or are laid off.

So what I'm hearing is "Take as much paid time off as you please because you're not getting vacation pay anyway". I'd use it as sick days, vacation days, AND mental health days (because they probably don't have those either).

I like the information you give. I want you to keep it up but if you're going to work for a company because they offer a vacation package or a time off package, you're going to work for that company for the wrong freaking reasons. I have worked many companies and very rarely ever get any kind of paid time off or vacation time. The only reason that it's I get it now get vacation time now is because it's in a contract and I have to use it for holiday pay because I have don't get paid holiday pay but I have to take the day off. I hate taking time off so even if I had didn't have to take it use it for holiday pay. I would let it go. I wouldn't even cash it out. I was just let it go. I hate time off. I'd rather work. I work two full-time jobs. I hate vacation time. I hate holidays. Holidays are a freaking waste of time. I have hated holidays since I was a kid that includes Christmas birthdays my own waste of time. So when I do have workplaces where I have vacation that's paid and that's a use it or lose it I lose it. I don't care. I let it go because I'd rather not take the time off

I have 390 hours of pto and cap out at 420. Once you become a senior or above, you no longer accrue pto but instead move to unlimited. It’s a scam. Our seniors, principals, and management took more time off when they accrued instead of having unlimited. The good news is that they cash out your existing pto when they promote you from a level 1 or 2 to a senior.

I have unlimited pto and I was hired with 4 weeks pto and I hardly ever took it. With the unlimited PTO I am taking 6 weeks off to make my compensation worth it. 5 days every other month. 🙂✌️ It makes you actively think about time off and all my prior pto was paid out to me.

My sister has unlimited PTO but they still have to request time off. It is a scam imo. When she asks for time off they don’t let her and when she ended up taking some days they wrote her up and she did not have any PTO time to make her case. Unlimited PTO = More controll/less payout

And accrued PTO also helps you balance inflation because if you earn the hours at $10 per hour and leave at $15 per hour they pay you at $15 per hour. I have been screwed by unlimited PTO

In a roundabout way this reminds me of my old job. Hired me for manager, then demoted me back to assistant under the guise of “you’re the most paid assistant with the company” yet they’d cut my hours so they were still paying me the same amount in the end. Scams allll around us from jobs lol.
