hey!! I wanted to ask you a couple questions about the podtrak! okay so i got this device for a podcast im starting and i was curious because I'm thinking of doing a video podcast, and because i already bought this i was wondering what's going to be the easiest way to make the video with the sound of the recorder directly on to it. I'm not sure if its going to be possible or if i'll have to mount the sound after when i edit the video. Thanks for the help beforehand and great content by the way super helpfull!!!

Hi Chris! Thank you for your super detailed and really useful videos! I have a set of BOYA BY-WM8 Pro-K2 and I got suprised when I noticed that I can record the two transmitter only together (via one receiver and one XLR input). Is this my fault or there is another way to record the two transmitters separately? In other way, it is a P4's specifity or other Zoom recorders works the same way? Or no matter what gear I use one XLR input results one channel so if I would like to record a conversation between two person I need two transmitter + two receiver which connect two XLR cable to P4?

Thank you for the video! Quick question: We went to record today, adding a guest (so with 3 mics). When I went to play it back, the mics all recorded individually. For example, you can hear mic 1 just fine and the other 2 people are talking but it's in the background of mic one. Is there a way to avoid this? It's probably something simple but I haven't been able to figure it out! Thanks in advance!

I am having this issue as well! Not sure it is a hissing but more of a hum or buzz. We are using 3 Samson Q2U mics. From our research so far it may be how our cables are oriented that are interfering with the signal. However I just learned a bunch of tricks in this video that I am going to try. Hi Chris, great videos, Thank you. Can Podtrak P4 be connected to the Atem mini pro so you can control audio of your XLR mic? I was thinking like XLR mic is connected to the Podtrak P4 with your sound pads and than you connect it to the camcorder and the camcorder is connected through HDMI to the ATEM mini pro? Does this work? Can the mic be connected to the camcorder through the P4? THX
@ChrisSpiegl
@ChrisSpiegl 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Čarobna, that would absolutely work. You would, however, have to use one of the headphone outputs and the quality may not be ideal in comparison to an audio mixer that can provide a Line signal which you could then plug directly into the ATEM Mini. With the P4 Headphone out connected to the ATEM Mini you would be able to level multiple microphones into the mix, send all that to the headphone out, from there either to the camera or to the ATEM Mini directly (in which case you would also have to set the audio delay to make sure it's sync with the video). I am actually also using the ATEM Mini nowadays and I use that combo with the Zoom F6 and it works perfectly. Cheers and happy podcasting / streaming / etc.

Yo, Chris! Great video. Well thought-out, well-presented. I see someone else a couple of years ago, asked my question, which is, can I put my own sound/music on the sound pads. I THINK your answer was that the music will have to be on the SD card and somehow played from that? But then where would the interview/mic be recorded? Do you perhaps have updated info? Thanks! Again, GREAT video.
@ChrisSpiegl

You load the files onto the SD card, and then you load them on the P4 Sound Pads. You can still record on the SD card as well.

Seems like a great piece of kit for someone just starting out, like me. I just ordered the Samson 2QU(?) mic and I'm hoping to order the Podtrack when I get paid later this week. I haven't been right through your content yet, but maybe you can point me towards the video I need? I'll be running my podcast with a friend, remotely, a couple of hundred miles away... - no time difference - so I really need a simple A to B to C guide how I setup the podtrak at my end, and how my friend sets up with his 2QU Mic and laptop at his end. I've never even made a Zoom or Skype call before! Thanks 😆 *UPDATE - OK cool, I isolated the rest of your Podtrak videos so I'll work my way through them. It would still be great to get an instructional for a buffoon like me, where you literally show unboxing and setting up of the Podtrak with a dynamic mic, connecting it all to the computer, Mac, ideally, installing something like Zoom or Skype, inviting a friend (who you've already set up at a different location with the same dynamic mic as you, but he's plugged directly into a laptop), recording a couple of minutes, transfering to the mac (my end) then opening and using the editing software. Then how to get the finished audio file hosted... sorry, this is seeming more and more crazy even as I type it 😂😂😂😂

Chris, this is extremely helpful thank you. I seem to have a good amount of static coming through the headphones. I notice when I mute the unused channels, that helps a lot. But when use 3 mics I hear a decent amount of it. Is my gain too high on each mic? Or is there something wrong in my settings? Thank you

There are a few options. Could be the headphones needing more power than the P4 can provide. I also would always turn off any mics channels I don't use. Also check if the mics need Phantom Power to work properly or if you just pull up the gain to the max. Those are a few things I'd try.

Great Review! I just got two Shure Sm7b's and I am on the hunt for a nice audio recorder /interface that can work with sm7b's without the need for a cloudlifter. Do you think Podtrak P4 is good enough to be used without cloudlifters for youtube podcast and voice overs for youtube videos or should I invest more and get something like the Zoom f6? I am not an audio pro but I do want to get the best quality out of the Sm7bs as I have already spent a lot on them and my camera and I also want my podcasts to sound extremely professional, so I do not want the audio interface to be the weak point. I am totally against using cloudlifters as I feel they are too expensive and I do not want to keep buying them for every mic that I add to my setup. I am planning on hosting more than 2-3 people on my podcast soon so I want it to be future proof. Any inputs will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
@ChrisSpiegl
@ChrisSpiegl 2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I would choose the Zoom F6 for your goal of wanting the best quality possible. However, I also have not tested the P4 with the SM7B. The one thing I can also add is that maybe adding an alternative to the Cloudlifter which would be the: TritonAudio FetHead But yea, long story short: I would go for the F6. It provides the highest possible quality, no need to monitor the audio if you don't want to. The only downside: if you want headphones for each person, you will have to add some kind of headphone splitter and ideally one that is powered so the signal is nice and loud for each individual.

Why are the pads not audible in the final USB mix? only in the headphones
@ovi.1000
@ovi.1000 11 ай бұрын
Hi Chris, Good setup guide. The one thing is missing to make this device appealing is a routing option with a mixed out signal for monitoring. You say every person can monitor itself, but if I have a dedicated person to overlook, I can't see any option for monitoring all inputs via routing. That's a bit limiting.
@ChrisSpiegl
@ChrisSpiegl 11 ай бұрын
That's right. There are no fancy routing options and there also is no headphone jack for a 5th person to just listen to the mix (or individually check on people). I guess that's something reserved to bigger devices.

If thinking about pre-recording your show, to send into a celestial radio station, this Zoom P4 will definitely do the trick, it will get the job done. I bought mine about a year ago, haven't really used it much, but now my buy some radio time to launch a new show (Not Cheap), but sometimes that's what you have to do to be heard, and nothing will get you out there, still, like being heard on celestial radio, as in am/fm frequency. And if paying for that airtime, every second, literally every second matters, including how you sound, cause those listening have no idea if you're broadcasting from a million dollar studio or from your closet at home, all they rate you by, initially, is how you sound. And this Zoom P4 totally gives you that big studio production sound, and can still even run it through Audacity or ect, to fine tune it even more. I'm very happy with this product, it's a life saver. I've played around with other low end mics, systems, and they just don't cut it, not that I've tried them all. Enjoy your P4, be good to it and it'll be good to you.

@@ChrisSpiegl here's my thing about podcasting, podcasting is great, if already have a very broad online internet presence and a huge following, but if do not, well. Also, unlike years ago when internet was a free flowing stream, now days there's so many 'gate keepers', who decide who gets seen, and who doesn't...regardless of talent. With celestial radio there are no gate keepers, it's a wide open medium still, there are no algorithms that hide you from others. With celestial radio, if 50,000 people tuned into 'station', than 50,000 people hear you....whereas online, if algorithm doesn't like you, maybe only 3 people find your show. At least that's been my experience. Yes am/fm radio costs a lot, but the exposure is priceless, if done right.

Do you have a video on how you edit a video pod cast with the p4? Like how do you sync the audio?
@ChrisSpiegl
@ChrisSpiegl 3 жыл бұрын
Hello 👋, at this time I have not done so but it may be an interesting idea. I guess what you mean specifically is to look at the syncing of 44.1khz files with video files which are usually 48khz and there may be audio drift? To do this video I’d just need to record some video and audio for a longer time and then see if there is drift and how to correct for it. Is that what you’d be looking for?

@@cineffect this is possible, but not really. I am assuming you’re talking about the Rode Wireless Go 2. the problem is: you can not connect them via USB-C. Hello, and thank you for your video. Right now I use a cheap usb microphone to record a podcast. I record into Mixcraft software and listen from Mixcraft. I read a script and often times stop and rerecord a segment. So the podcast can be made up of several sections of audio in Mixcraft. If I upgrade to an XLR microphone and use the Podtrak p4 to capture the audio, can I still dynamically edit during the recording process by interfacing the P4 to my laptop to use the Mixcraft editing software at same time? Appreciate your feedback.
@ChrisSpiegl
@ChrisSpiegl 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, with the process you already have I would suggest that the P4 is not what you are looking for. Sounds more like you should invest into an audio interface instead of a Podcast Hardware Recorder. This way you can use a XLR mic, hook it up to your computer via USB and then record straight into Mixcraft. Still providing higher quality audio than using any cheap USB mic by itself. I can't recommend any since I do not use any dedicated USB audio interfaces, but I think KZbin search will yield good results about that.

@ChrisSpiegl
@ChrisSpiegl 3 жыл бұрын
The internal clock of the P4 is held up by the batteries. Usually, if you just switch the batteries within a few seconds to new ones you will not have any issues. But if you leave them out for longer the internal clock will reset and you'll have to set it again. So having batteries in should solve this.

Do you mean with the Sound Pads? Yes, the PodTrak P4 can convert the MP3 files to WAV. However, it takes relatively long and it's faster to do it on a computer. As far as I know the ATEM Mini Pro has a normal mini Jack (3.5mm Jack) input and to connect the P4 to the Mini Pro, you'd need a normal TRS to TRS (mini Jack to mini Jack / AUX) Cable. You then use one of the headphone ports on the P4 to connect to the ATEM.
