Not all of us are watch snobs, some of us buy because of the looks and TAG does a great job. I own a Flyback, Calibre 36, Calibre 16 day/ date, Calibre 8 GMT and a Calibre 01 - all these watches get me compliments, my Rolex submariner gets me " is it real?". I like watches, if it looks good - I buy it and not because its a Pani or a Rolex, I'm NOT in it for investment which is what these so called snobs seem concerned about depreciation (like Tags do). Who cares!!........just don't pay retail, lots of used like new on eBay among other places.

My wife bought me my first “luxury” watch....tag aquaracer calibre 5... say what you will about tag, it works great, looks good, and was affordable for her , at the time. More importantly though, its a watch that has a story, and emotional attachment (my wedding day)...THAT is what watches are about. Not the brand... not the movement. The feeling you get when you wear it. Nothing more, nothing less.
@nolanolivier67915 жыл бұрын
Completely empathise; my wife got me an aquaracer for xmas a few years ago, and I love it because I associate it with the wonderful memories of the adventures we had while I wore it; better still, it got me into watches. If I ever feel down and want to remember diving in Borneo, I jut have to put it on. It isn't perfect, and I treated it as an everyday watch, but it will always have a special place in my heart... and isn't that what horology is really all about? I don't really care what other people think of it...

I always like Tag Heuer watches because their watches design are beautiful. I like the design of the Link bracelet watch, the design of the Kirium, the design of the Carrera and the design of the Monaco. Probably Tag Heuer watches became unpopular because they were not making their own movement, They were using mainly ETA movements and in some watches they used plastic instead of steel for the movements support.

Those of the watch community that continue to lift their noses at TAG seem to forget why this brand sells so many watches: Looks. Most people who buy a TAG aren’t overly concerned with what movement it has. I have IWC’s, Omega’s, Seiko‘s and two TAG’s among others, in my collection. I recently bought the newly released Carrera Calibre 16 Chrono (Valjoux ETA 7750 tho)with the blue dial for 3 reasons: heritage, wonderful to look at, and the fact that the AD sold it to me for 25% off retail (I always negotiate at least 20%). If the price is right, I may even buy a Monaco someday. It’s silly that some are ok with wearing an Oris, Hamilton or Longines but wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a TAG. Discounted off retail, they’re a great entry level watch - IMHO.
@jonathanbeaumont06 жыл бұрын
I agree, you can also get pretty good deals on the grey market and used. What I find interesting is people are more impressed by my formula one caliber 5 than they are my planet ocean 8900 which was almost triple the price. @chawenhalo00896 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I'm glad someone said it. TAG Heuer has always been miles ahead in terms of pure style albeit fashion conscious. In 2009 I bought a fabulous looking Aquaracer Caliber S with an incredible hybrid movement, all beautifull navy blue years before it became fashionable. I guess the problem is with the inherent quality of their watches and issues with quality control. I don't know of 1 person who's got a TAG Heuer and not bought ot back within warranty because it was broken (me included). Some horror stories with the Monacos. This brand deserves to be better than just a fashion cash cow brand. Branding and choice for the consumer was miles better than the competition though! Now Omega is strutting that line better.

I've just bought a TAG Heuer Aquaracer Pepsi GMT as my first Swiss made watch and I find myself loving it more and more each day, I was too impatient for the Black Bay GMT wait list and I'll never have the portfolio to get a GMT Master unless I pay a massive premium. I'm a huge F1 fan, so growing up I've seen the TAG Heuer brand sponsoring teams all over the grid. Because of this, rightly or wrongly through the power of advertising, It was up there with one of the first watch brands I knew about and respected. People don't like the whole TAG acquisition, and I get that completely, but for me as a mid 20 year old (not remembering "Heuer") that adds a bit more racing heritage to it, TAG its self being a major part in the sport in the past just makes that whole side of it a bit more interesting, to me anyway! The Formula 1 line of TAG Heuer is actually what got me into watches in the first place so for that alone, I cant really knock it... The long grind to save the money for a Polar Dial Explorer 2 now beings though... 😅

IAmConorr Right there with you. I usually wear my TAG F1 to races and I get a number of compliments.

Exactly. Plus is the Tag infront of the name really that big of a deal? It's not owned by TAG group anymore anyway, if Tag Heuer had to change their name to just heuer again it would confuse even more people.😂 plus as you said, it adds more cool history to the F1 heritage, and I think Tag Heuer sounds pretty cool as well.
@joshsmith78126 жыл бұрын
Most watch snobs turn their noses up at TAG Heuer without any respect for what they've brought to horology. Most people who think Tag is shit still can't give me a real reason why, if the watches simply don't appeal to you, cool that's all good and well, but when you're going to talk down on somebody else's time piece, especially from a brand that has done some pretty cool things in their history, and just say it sucks, at least have an argument as to why. Besides their entry level pieces, they have some really cool conceptual/Haute Horology watches as well.

TRUE STORY: My first "serious" watch was an all steel 1989 baby size F1 (the 2nd lot under the TAG umbrella), that was for my 12th birthday (and some good exam results). Now I pretty much wrecked the thing within 3 yrs but took the battery out and kept it thinking that one day I'd get it fixed to give it to someone that mattered most. As I grew up (well, I still love motorsport and wreck watches - hence I wear a Seiko Marinemaster "Tuna" 300m, thats bulletproof) and learned more about watches I always thought this old TAG Heuer was worthless. In 2018 browsing the old litterweb I was surprised not to be able to find a the same model as I had. Lots of plastic ones, but very few if any steel ones. Anyway, wife's bithday coming up out went my old F1 steel back to TAG Heuer for repair for th pricely sum of €550. It came back fantasticly well restored. I don't where on earth they sourced the parts?: near as damn it identical bracelet as the original(colour of the steel ever so slightly different), new bezel (bakelite I think) crown, cristal and movement shroud. To see this old thing I'd kept in a box for 26 yrs as if it left the factory but wearing the beautifull patina on the face bought back a wave of childhood memories and made for a very, very happy wife. I was surprised they'd even accept restoring it and TAG Heuer did it beautifully. ow my wife as a Cartier a Hermes and never in all these years has anyone managed to get her to actually wear a watch for an amount of time (I did get some limited success with a white Baby G Schok). This one though, with the emotional attachement, does not leave her wrist.

Back in 1990 I bought a TAG Heuer 2000 chrono quartz, a rare model with tachy bezel. I saved long and hard for that ‘high end’ watch after pulling myself out of unemployment and depression. 3 years later I lost it when my apartment was burgled, I never quite got over that. I’ve since owned proper mechanical watches - Omega Speedmaster, Vintage Heuer automatic chronos calibre 11/12/Valjoux etc… Yet the loss of my ‘Starter pack’ Swiss TAG (with Quartz movement, the bane of stuffy watch enthusiasts 😂) that few would care about still haunts me. The memories of things we prized and lost that signify an important period in life don’t go away so easily, regardless of cost, brand, or monetary value. But I’m at least thankful that I will never forget the day I bought that little TAG trinket, it signified a bright new chapter in my life after crawling out of a dark abyss🙂

I’ve owned 3 Rolex’s and all were shit. My Tag Heuer is so far ahead in simple reliability and accuracy.

Which Rolex's did you have and which tag were you using now?

I'm just dipping my tires into the world of high horalogy, and I'll be honest, I'm having a tough time with TAG Heuer. I know they have a rich history, and make nice watches, but I still have that feeling that buying one isn't like buying an Omega, but more like buying a really expensive fashion brand. I have some on my list of watches I'm looking at, but when I start shaving the list down to a 3-watch collection, I don't think I've been able to bring myself to put a TH into any of the combos.

Which one is better? Calibre 16 or calibre 1887?

Idk much about horology, but to me Tag Heuer watches has always looked the best, combining elegance, while looking stylish and sporty at the same time.

Say whatever you want but the Carrera calibre 16 chronograph was always one of my favs!

I gave Tag a chance, not again. Had to send it in twice to get it "fixed". After getting it back, it loses 5-minutes a week, if not more and the band keeps falling apart now. Bought a Seiko Turtle Dive watch and very happy with it. It keeps perfect time and costs about the same as a new band for my Tag.

I have a rose gold Monza caliber 36. Maybe my favourite piece.

Their Monaco are very distinctive appealing watches. Owned one many years ago before I was fortunate enough to resell and move upwards.
