Hunter doesn't turn on Belos because he finds out that he's a grimwalker. He turns on Belos when he finds out that Belos planned on killing him, has killed countless versions of him, and sorta enjoys killing him.

Yup. And it was empathsizes that the Hunter we get. Was the only one who was obedient, when other hunters wanted to escape. It was only when Hunter knows Belos will try to kill him that he changes. But Hunter had great loyalty and would have denied it even if he knew deep down it was true.

Personally as a handicapped person I've always seen Eda's owlbeast/curse to be a metaphor for both mental and chronic illness. Eda literally says "I can't cure it but with the right potion it's managable" or something along those lines, and in the episode where she confronts the beast and they're chained together she resolves to work with it. I've always seen that as Eda *finally* accepting that she has limits. That her illness just isn't going to go away and she's more mindful about that. But that's just me

my mother has type 1 diabetes and as soon as i clocked the metaphor for chronic illness, i couldn't help but see my own mother in Eda. i've also begun to relate more to Eda's story personally since i got my autism diagnosis last year. the owl beast is great representation of how my own hidden disability can effect my life and experiences. truly amazing representation for chronically ill folks!

Sometimes i can really make a parallel of Eda's curse, not only as a non socially acceptable disease, but as a mental one of that, such as BPD and borderline. As someone diagnosed with both i can really understand the feeling of having to keep up with drinking a "magic elixir" because if i dont i will indeed become a monster, hard to contain, which has hurt loved ones before i learned how to deal with it -just like Eda!-. Having to deal with a curse that quite literally makes you sometimes a danger to others really does make you isolate from society, as you learn that maybe it's best for people if they dont interact with you, as well as seeing how repulsed people -or witches - are by your disorder. I can really see myself in Eda struggles and i really love the representativity, even if not purposefully

1:41:28 This is beating a very dead horse but something to consider anyway, the cancellation didn't take place in October 2021. Dana had known about it for quite a while when she talked about it during her Twitch stream in July of 2021. Based on the timeline, it's quite possible that TOH was cancelled within a year of it's premiere. Which even in Disney's case is practically unheard of for a show without severe external issues. It could certainly be that it was cancelled due to serialization, but it's not as though Disney didn't know the show was a serial when they ordered two seasons of it, even before the premiere. Someone took executive action to cut the show, who we'll never know, why we'll never know, though not fitting the 'Disney Brand' certainly infers that someone didn't like the content. What content, again, we'll never know.

It did explode later on and even before that it was alrrady solid. Disney shows are already plummeting in quality except for its more serialised ones so why they offed the successful ones idk. But we know that shows can be revived even after a planned cancellation or even after one that was executed. It just so happens it's not usually Disney who does the reviving. So even in the argument of time there was no excuse to not course correct after its major success. @@isra-rta

1:43:32 Regarding the shows queer rep is much more than the sheer amount of queer characters but also the variety among them: Lilith is canonicly aroace, it happens that I am aroace to, our comunity is so invisible that every time we are represented is like a small celebration, plus the popular theory that Gus's dad is to, the amount and diversity of queer characters makes this the gayest show I know, maybe borderline with She-Ra and the princesses of power

I understand not being totally sold on the owl house season 1 when it was still airing, but idk I was immediately hooked. The episode where Luz and King write a story together couldn't be more on the nose about what the first season was trying to accomplish. It was giving you a bunch of low stakes fun and fluff to get you to become familiar with the personalities, routines and goals of well rounded characters, so that when shit hit the fan you were totally invested. Fantastic season id give it an 8/10.

ToH is just such a feel good and fun show, and I think there's a strong case to be made that Luz and Amity might be the healthiest depiction of a relationship, gay, straight or otherwise, I've ever seen on a tv show. I don't know if Dana had them get together when they did due to the cancellation or if that was always the plan, but I loved actually getting to see their surprisingly mature relationship play out rather than just getting a full series of will they/won't they as is the norm (particularly in animated shows). Season 1 plays out the way it does as a compromise far as I'm aware, things like the magic school were imposed on the show by Disney and not what Dana really wanted to be doing. If she'd gotten free reign, I imagine the show we'd have gotten would be darker and closer to season 2 right from the start. My only qualm with the finale is I wish Amity had been more involved with Luz's side of the plot- she was as much of a lead by the end as Eda or King so it was kinda odd seeing her relegated to the B story sideline. But that's a small nitpick given the circumstances.

1:40:00 funny thing is, there’s an exact parallel to this, the french show Wakfu. Seasons 1 and 2 were DEMANDED to be episodic by the french channel and this they had to space out the plot with “filler” and only got as much support until then. However since the creators run a multimedia company focused on MMOs, they managed to squeeze in themselves a third season picked by Netflix with a season 2.5 connecting it and this year will release their crowdfunded season 4 and lemme tell ya, the channel’s limitations really show when you contrast the plot’s writting to the “filler’s”. Season 3 in particular almost giving me tonnal whiplash.

Luz charges her phone through the portal, more specifically with presumably an outlet on the other side of it; I believe the delapidated house behind the one she grew up in already has power hooked up, which would explain this as we know the portal always opens up at that threshold, though her mother might make reference to turning the power back on to that house in season 3, I cant remember. In one scene you can see her charging cord going through the portal door. I believe it was the same scene where she says "thats enough internet for today" to/with king in the vicinity, but I might be misremembering. I'm pretty sure thats the case, anyway. Been a few months since my last watch through, though I'll try and remember to come back and update this comment either way when i do soon. Cheers!

After a new watch through I can say: Season 1 episode 16 opens with Luz and King watching cat videos on the interwebs, and in that scene her charging cord is able to be seen passing through the portal, though not actively connected to her phone. I was wrong about the quote but it doesn't really matter. Also, Camila does not mention power to the building in any way shape or form at any point in time. Seeing as how Jacob (the curator of the Gravesfield Historical Society pre-S3E2) has no trouble setting up entire networks of (illegal) wireless, motion sensing game cameras on her property and directly within said dilapidated house it stands to reason that he might have used (stolen) their electricity to do so, and it already being hooked up OR him bypassing the breaker would explain both his and Luz' flagrant use of electromagnetics.

There are several common synchronization voice actors between The Owl House and other Disney cartoon series. Wendy Malick is the voice of Edalyn Clawthorne in The Owl House but also the voice of Principal Folsom in Cornelius Fillmore. Mae Whitman is the voice of Amity Blight in The Owl House but also the voice of Robin Spencer in Cornelius Fillmore and the voice of Rose in American Dragon. But I can see even more analogies and parallels to other Disney cartoon series. And in this case I mean Sabrina's Secret Life, the successor of Sabrina the animated series. Because especially in the beginning Amity is like Cassandra, Edalyn is like Aunt Zelda, Lilith is like Aunt Hilda and King the Demon dog is like Salem the cat. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

All praise to the owl house, but also praised to Alex H and Gravity falls- "It has the most amount of tags, beating Gravity falls- granted that show has been off the air for seven years" that implies it had the most tags for seven CONSECUTIVE years and that's AFTER it was canceled, not even including the 4.5 years it ran. His work on Gravity falls and The Owl House is truly unforgettable.

Gravity Falls is Breaking Bad in the animated series world. The show others will use as a benchmark and an example for decades. "Body Swap", the episode where they got small, the episodes with traveling into people's (Willow and Belos) minds etc - I'm sure Gravity Falls was the inspiration for those. Truly a legendary cartoon.

I get that it’s “the gay witch show” but that’s always the last think I think about when I watch it, the story and characters are just so good, them being gay feels so, idk, normal? If that was the goal it worked

Looooveee the effort put in to this video, I am a huge fan of the owl house and those who sing its praises!! A few minor details first(some people have already mentioned): lilith is the oldest! Also, luz didn’t free the basilisks, they escaped themselves and Vee was able to take Luz’s place right within a few minutes of her absence in the first episode. Another thing I think is important about Belos, and will be long: I think he did have unconditional love and that his brother didn’t abandon him, he just late hate and rage takeover and chosen to reject it, unlike Luz who embraces those around her, to a fault. I think it’s implied that Caleb (his brother) can be referenced from Hunter and the previous Grimwalkers. Hunter and the others always end up going against Philip because they knew it was wrong and they cared about others, rather than their mission/purpose. The brothers’ bond and reason they split apart can be detailed in Hollow Mind in the background (ah I remember hyper analyzing those paintings when it first dropped). Caleb and Philip grew up as witch hunters in the puritan times. They were “lured” by a witch, probably with the intent on killing her, until the allure of the Boiling Isles sways Caleb’s mind/perspective. Meanwhile philip has always been a sniveling little freak, and got pissed especially when he realizes Caleb and the witch (Evelyn, who is implied to be a Clawthorne) fall in love and presumably conceive a child. There was also a point where philip, i think before he finds out about his nibling to be, started drawing glyphs on himself not to cure his (deserved) broken nose, but to use the power to do what he came there for. One of the paintings you see he has one of his outbursts after inhaling palismen and Caleb hugs him to pull him out of it. So what does Philly boy do once his brother shows off his wife, Caleb mistakenly thinking they had found the way to mend their rift? He K*LLS HIM. And not even like an out of control thing, he did it with a knife and ran off like a coward as Evelyn went after him. I think it’s implied when Luz and Lilith meet him in the past, he had already m*rd*red his brother, rather than being abandoned. I do believe this aspect of the background was an important one missed in your fantastic video and to sort of make belos truly unredeemable because like you said, he was always manipulative, he was just using a facade to shield it. The guy who does that to his older brother just because he fell in love with an “undesirable” or whatever has self-inflicted trauma drawn on by backwards hatred. Anyways i just finished the video and love love loved it. Can’t wait to watch the others mentioned from the comments (Moral Oral??? Let’s go!!) thanks so much for the review of one of my top 3 fave shows ever :)

Philip also found the Isles on his own. Caleb didn't leave him alone in the Boiling Isles, he left him alone in the Human Realm, quite possibly running from Philip and the other witch hunters.

Really well made video! TOH is one of my favourite series. Wish we could have had more time dedicated to more episodic elements to chill with our characters in S2 and especially S3. The team did so well with what they had though. Came out really well despite the setbacks. Screw Disney.

One thing that I think is an actual problem in the series is that it is it made clear that the owl beast is its own being and it’s trapped with Eda just as much as she was with him, unknown to her for most of her life. And while she makes a choice to except that, the owl beast is not given any choice. She chooses to be OK with being chained to him, for going ever looking for a cure, which means she’s choosing to keep him trapped. And that’s why initially I thought it was a good metaphor for a chronic condition, but after that it just doesn’t work. if it was made clear that they could never be separated from each other ever again it would be fine, but her acceptance of her condition comes across as her choosing to never see if there is a cure a possible and choosing to keep him trapped against his will.

I didn't see it that way. To me it really seemed that there was no escaping or undoing that link between them, and that trying to cure her would have been much more like killing the owlbeast within than freeing it. I do think that's at least somewhat up to interpretation though

In terms of bisexual main characters, it's pretty common knowledge that Korra (from avatars Legend of Korra) was the first big step for showing queer representation on kids animated television, and she is indeed bi. I know many people feel the show didn't do enough and that it doesn't count because Korra doesn't show enough interest in women before the very end, but it's confirmed outside of the text that the intent was there earlier and was being pushed for and couldn't have been showed better than it was due largely to that being suppressed on purpose (and also like, Korra's entire thing as a character is having a hard time introspecting and understanding herself and struggling to connect to others and find the love she wants, so while it was unexpected, it made sense to me. Plus there are signs of intimacy you just don't see anywhere else with her character, like writing to Asami even at her lowest point where she couldn't bring herself to reach out and seek connection anywhere else) Again it's pretty common knowledge that the intent was for her to be bi even though it's something the viewer can choose to ignore or can find executed poorly within the text, so I feel that she's worth mentioning, and that if the video includes mentioning Luz as the first without knowing that I'd question the authority on the subject of representing queerness in media. It's practically unavoidable to know about Korrasami and a lot of tOH fanart has crossovers and references to that pairing
