They didn't move back to Canada because they couldn't afford Japan. Simon went to Canada and filed for divorce, leaving Martina behind to sort out their affairs in Japan. She had to move to Canada because they have a clause where you can't get divorced unless you are seperated in the country for a whole year. Martina even mentioned her life in Japan was uprooted due to it. That's why she moved back to Japan once the divorce was over.

I know their relationship ending was confusing to me, but I remember I came across a reddit post during that time. It said that during Covid Simon started doing online yoga classes and fell in love with his yoga instructor or something. That's why he suddenly became all zen and spiritual or whatever. Like he morphs into the persona of the person he's interested in. Well later on I think he even made videos or podcast-style videos with said yoga instructor but it was never confirmed their relationship was anything more than friends. Also, in one of Simon and Martina podcast episodes, Martina said when she met Simon he was extremely misogynistic and Simon even backed up her claims and said he changed a lot over the years. I bring this up, because people have speculated he fell back to his old ways and started consuming red pill content. There was so much tea on reddit but I think the posts have been deleted and at the time I really wasn't interested about it. I followed couple of their reddit pages way before they split, and those pages started posting a lot of speculation. Anyways, I'm posting this because I want to know if anyone remembers some "old tea" or speculations like these on reddit?

that's so... cringe if he changed due to red pill content. it's more understandable if he got caught up with the whole yoga cult / falling in love with the yoga instructor, not that it's excusable. if the red pill stuff is even a little bit true, yikes
@notspiritualenough38132 ай бұрын
@@maggyfrog I think the red pill stuff does have an ounce of truth. I kinda move in "spiritual" circles. hence my username. The yoga/meditation spiritual people can be super judgemental, and a lot of the guys believe women should be submissive or allow them to have open relationships. Especially in the ISKCON world, though I don't think Simon fell in that deep. Modern New Age Spiritualism is not the free spirit kind we remember from the 60's and 70's.

So happy you're uploading vids more often, been watching your channel since ages it feels like! I remember keeping up with this collapse, I used to be an avid watcher of theirs and it was crazy and sad seeing everything unfold (gurugossiper/lolcow/reddit) I only read stuff and didn't participate in those discussions though. There was a lot of discussion on those about him being a covert narcissist though, and how he molded his persona to be like her while they were together, made himself seem like a hero when it came to caring for her and made it seem like she needed him to survive. When they separated he ended up dating someone who was very much into yoga, then became a lot like her(the weird persona change). I don't remember much else though. Martina's new channel seems to have kept the essence of EYK, Simon's new stuff is...strange and not my cup of tea.

The EYK situation sucks, I used to enjoy their content even though I wasn’t too invested in Korean culture. They seemed like such a great couple and had great chemistry too. I agree their content went down in quality after moving to japan. I wasn’t sure why, but you articulated it well- lack of connections. I also remember when the Simon video dropped and seeing his 180 degree personality change- it was very eerie. I haven’t watched much of either since but it’s definitely one of the biggest tragedies in the foreigner in Asia vlogging sphere for me

Great video, Scott! I have a theory on what happened to Simon and the divorce. I followed their channel closely when they moved to Japan, and like everyone else thought they were #goals and was shocked when they announced they were separating and moving back to Canada. And I was even more shocked by Simon’s drastic personality change, and as I watched I realized I had seen this before; when my friend joined an online cult. When Simon said he had gotten deep into yoga, it immediately threw up red flags as there are SO MANY nefarious cults disguised as yoga studios/clubs/gurus these days. My theory is that he joined as part of his fitness workouts (probably online, while still in Japan), but the other people/guru pointed out that he does everything for his wife, his entire life revolved around her and he deserved to do something for himself. Once they figured out Martina was disabled and wouldn’t join their group, maybe she even pushed back on Simon when he wanted to take more yoga courses or something else that cost a lot, they encouraged him to do more “for himself” (the cult) and drop the dead weight (Martina). They tapped into something Simon was already feeling during a time when he was vulnerable (the pandemic). I even left a comment on Martina’s instagram post that simply said “Simon got sucked into a yoga cult” and she deleted it, though she left up a ton of other comments trash talking him. I feel like their marriage could have survived covid, their channel’s downfall, and even moving back home, but Simon’s drastic turn of face drove the final wedge between.

I used to enjoy the Kpop videos a lot from the bad English busting to the quirky naming and imitating of dance moves and all the memes. I watched a little less after they moved to Japan because the vibe of the videos had changed a bit and also, because my sister and a lot of my friends had already been "feeding me" Japan for awhile at that point (my sister went to Kansai Gaidai for a year and that's how I stumbled upon your channel while researching whether I could mail her cheese curds for poutine) . I was incredibly sad for them when I learned that they broke up. I still follow Martina's channel; I'm glad that she managed to keep her sense of humour and quirkiness through it all. As someone with a chronic illness also (I have fibromyalgia), I appreciated her "build a ladder" approach. I watched Simon's a couple times after they broke up but I don't know if he's still posting because the YT algorithm doesn't recommend me his videos anymore. I agree that it was a very drastic nearly traumatic change from hipster Simon to guru-tesque; I had not foreseen that coming, either. I think the using their channel for "blasting" one another back and forth would have been worse ; I'm glad they had an NDA that limited the diffusion of the drama online because when people go through these types of events and feelings, it gets really messy really quick and I think they both could have spewed out things they'd regret saying even more...

Martina’s plan was always to go back to Canada for family, but didn’t feel like she was done with Japan yet. Regarding the dog, the issue there was that Martina did not get over the death of their beloved dog , which also was a big part of their Eat your Kimchi channel and the merch, and Simon got a new dog while she was still grieving . I think this was a bit insensitive from what I remember.. I remember it was mentioned that the couple used to be very competitive with each other, which never ends well tbh...But I had no idea about any of it at a time. I really used to adore the couple, now I understand I used to idolize what they allowed us to see as many others. When they separated I could understand where Martina was coming from. Simon seemed super insensitive to her grieving and such and did whatever he felt like. First sign of someone being selfish when he disregards their partners feelings imho. So if Simon was like that with Martina on a daily I can understand what she was hinting at... Is just imagine if that was happening through most of their marriage together, man, this is what amazes me, we all were in awe of their relationship, no one could ever tell something was off. Amazing acting (?)

I started to watch less and less when they moved to Japan, but the separation and Simon's transformations were still shocking to me. From what I gather from many subreddits, and from what I remember seeing in older videos, I think Simon was an abuser,(allegedly) a quite well hidden one. I still watch some videos by Martina sometimes and wish her all the best.

Yeah the Japan stuff just wasn’t my thing either but I thought mostly cause I already lived in Japan. Simon’s change…uh…yeah that was….different. I was confused to say the least. I can’t take sides on this cause I would really need undeniable proof as abuse is a strong accusation. Nonetheless I will say Martina seems a lot happier and healed somewhat and I wish her the best.

i... remember all this. all I'll say is i didn't like how Martina used the internet to try and destroy Simon's reputation when Simon was doing what he could (public facing) to keep Martina's reputation intact. i moved on after that and never looked back until now. just gotta remember the good times, the bad times mean nothing now.

I thought it was so ironic that they used to call their fans nasties, because nasty is exactly what EYK fans turned out to be. When they split, the fandom was vicious. Simon and Martina chose not to discuss their split publicly, and they asked people not to speculate. Instead their fans took sides, screenshot their every comment, fabricated their own stories to explain the split and spread horrible rumours everywhere. And the bullying of Simon was brutal to watch. They arm-chair diagnosed him with a personality disorder, said he joined a cult, had an affair, all kinds of crazy shit, and nobody had any proof of any of it. I was so disgusted. They were so obviously both heartbroken and hurt about how things had turned out. I can't believe people saw that and decided to pile on. As if divorce isn't hard enough without having to go through all that crap, too.

Martina always wanted to live in Japan. it was her dream! it wasn't just meeting the production guy in Korea. I watched every single one of their videos until their breakup. I can't watch them anymore (I tried) because I loved them together and it was so sad and frankly bizarre they broke up. then Martina was so ugly to Simon on Instagram and just the anger and resentment was through the roof. she was so kind (or presented as so in all her videos) and Simon literally moved across the country twice for her and takes care of her which I know caused her a ton of guilt that she would talk about. And you said their videos about each other was so much he said she said straight up bickering that was so ugly and so different then how they built each other up all the time. I don't think Simon is a narc. I think she needed a reason to leave and she chose that. Did you see how much weight Simon lost when they broke up? It broke him. Martina hasn't dealt with the trauma yet. I also have a chronic illness and needing help// having your spouse be a caretaker is something I totally relate to--but I don't have EDS, I have a blood clotting disorder and lyme disease. I think they needed help. I pray they reconcile and get back together because I really believe they still love each other.

A lot of people were ultra angry at Simon. Personally I felt like we would never know the true story. Him being called a narcissist seemed like she was bitter but saying she was recovering from ptsd I felt like was definitely breaking the NDA on a massive level and was extremely unprofessional. I think Simon could have sued for defamation of character and had the power of an NDA behind him, but he didn’t so it does make me question the whole “being a narcissist” thing.

All breakups are sad but I never believed that Martina was abused by Simon. He was never that kind of person - not before and not after their breakup. To me Martina was acting like a woman scorned.

Simon was a go getter. Up for anything his ex-wife was into. Changed his appearance and the way he acted to be keep her happy. Not he’s returned to his normal state after this whole ordeal.

@@richardc5100 His boring self. You're unfairly placing the blame on Martina. Simon is an autonomous human being who chose to apply that identity to himself. It could also be very possible that he liked that style at the time and grew out of it. Their problem wasn't about the clothes Simon wore. It's much deeper and we will never know the whole story.

Its sad what happened to them. I used to love their videos. I remember when they moved to Japan, my wife was doing marketing for a company in Tokyo, and contacted them about promoting a product. They said they would love to promote the product ( they were already fans of the company) so she sent it to them for free, but they never did, and she never heard anything from them again. They basically got a 4man yen product for free lol. At the time I thought it was kind of crappy of them, but shortly after everything started to come out about them moving abck to Canada and stuff so we figured they were just having a tough time.
@unrested2 ай бұрын
Oh wow very interesting! Yeah things must have been getting pretty rough if they were at the point of not following up with product shout outs. As a KZbinr you never wanna just ignore stuff like that.
