As much as I love chris broad and the current faces (trash taste/pewdiepie/sharla/etc) that fill the niche, nothing beats that memory of watching old jvlog videos in my childhood bedroom at 1am, having school in the morning, watching at 360p on the browser on my first tiny nokia windows 8 phone, and beginning to learn about life outside of my small (sh*tty) scottish hometown.

Mira has facial features and personality symptoms that look like those of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, which always made me feel bad for her. She obviously didn't have a strong family structure, and just behaved in such an emotionally immature, lost way that as a parent I would be nervous in my adult child thought and acted like that in the world, nevermind alone in a foreign country. She definitely seemed to seek attention, even if negative, to grasp for self worth and identity. I hope she has grown past all that at this point, but I think there were also clinical psychological issues at play.

I remember all this, and it’s been great seeing you post up so much again! I don’t always comment but I’m watching. You always impress me with your kindness and it was good seeing your take on this. :) I got the impression watching kanadajin that she was autistic like me, like how she described social things in Japan she took things very seriously and she seemed to special interest things, not just Japan itself and being Muslim, everything she got an interest in. And it’s part of what made her videos good. And that she made notes of Japanese etiquette to impress on people gave me the idea perhaps she had been caught doing those things and that’s why she is so adamant. Lots of autistic people are people pleasers cuz we suck at social things so we try harder than most cuz well we have to… I sympathize with her for doing stupid things, and cuz her massive popularity also came with massive hate when she messed up. Which cuz of people pleasing thing, can give autistic people great anxiety and panic, which fuels stupid things. The only things I stop sympathizing with her was the attacking other jvloggers part… she got way mean and crossed lines that are not so forgivable. Internet won’t forget/forgive. Some people can survive the hate and thrive some can not, with how she reacted to the hate with panic and desperation, I don’t think she can handle it, and I think if she returned it would just be a repeat.
@unrested
@unrested Ай бұрын
I mean I feel like as jvloggers we all did and said stupid stuff cause we were new to the platform and still new to Japan too. I look back at some of my old videos as ultra cringey or something silly that someone who had only spent a year in Japan would say. Nonetheless, the good and bad that came from all those years of videos and collabs are still really nice to go back enjoy the nostalgia of now.

I remember you made a video about her and some other youtubers were pissed that you deleted it later. They wanted you to keep it up. Mira never wanted to just be a white Canadian. She wanted to feel special and unique, something she got from moving to Japan. I also think she converted to Islam because she was in love and stalked Rody In Japan (does anyone remember that channel?). He was a half-Pakistani and half-Japanese Jvlogger, and I often watch him. Well, he wasn't too fond of her behavior and made like 2 or 3 exposed videos about her. I think she stayed Muslim because being a "Muslim revert" made her feel special and different and I think she got a lot of support from Muslim men online.
@unrested
@unrested Ай бұрын
I do remember seeing support in her comments from Muslim women which I thought was very nice for her. Unfortunately I think the sudden shift annihilated her channel in the algorithm and lead to the closure of her channel. The weirdest part was when she would be in a hijab talking in full Japanese reducing her video to this ultra niche style then saying that she was losing views and subs due to bigotry. I don’t know if she understood just how much she had pigeon holed her channel.

Post-video thoughts: I really miss those early days, 2010 give or take, maybe partially because it was the time when I was still in a honeymoon period with the idea of Japan myself. Early on there was little to no drama and I'd just be happy to watch regular vids of people like you, Victor, Rachel & Jun, Sam, Texan, Sharla, Micaela, Kelly, and yes, even Mira... it really was kind of sad when things splintered, but that's just the nature of social groups, I think. People get to know each other too well, some of the less-stellar people forget to wear their masks and things get ugly, disagreements happen and things get awkward, etc. Oh well. It really was nice while it lasted though, so there's always the memory of that.
@unrested
@unrested Ай бұрын
I’ll always be convinced that 2010 was the best of times for jvlogging at least for me. It was so active and so fun and production could still be mid and get you new viewers. These days we old schoolers are shadows of the past. But at least it’s comforting to relax in the shade.
@Felice_Enellen
@Felice_Enellen Ай бұрын
@@unrested I still listen to you and occasionally Victor. It is indeed comforting. The new wave of J-people is perfectly nice, but Chris Broad, the Tokyo Creative crew, the Trash Taste guys, Aki, Sydney, and hey, even Felix, they're all so high-production, media-oriented, and impersonal in comparison to the old J-vlog crew, where it was just a regular person talking to the camera about their personal experiences and life in Japan, just to share what it was like with us viewers, rather than making it a deliberate commercial enterprise. Chris sorta started out the old way, but I think he kinda pioneered the more professional J-vlog/docu that we see today. Back then, there was more of a sense of hearing a friend talk about their day and less feeling like an old human-interest program that would run in the afternoon or evening on local TV. But, times change, and that's not necessarily bad. I think Chris does a lot for both Japan and people interested in Japan. I just miss the vicarious feeling of hanging out with a regular somebody experiencing the novelty of life in Japan vs. basically watching what amount to mini-documentaries, even though they are quite nice.

Wow that was a blast from the past. I totally forgot about the dramas with Kat and Rodi and the Black face video. I used to watch Mira all the time, and as a Canadian from the same province as her, I felt like I could relate to her (at first lol) and knew her in a way. The most jarring thing was when she went from a hostess to a hijabi muslim lol by that point I had stopped watching her content after the expose from Rachel. She set her sights on moving to Saudi Arabia, a place she "had always wanted to live" because she randomly pointed to it on a globe, according to her. Why any woman would want to move to a place where they have next to no rights is pretty scary. Despite her nefarious and questionable actions, I feel a bit bad for her as she was clearly going through it and I hope she has found some peace and stability. I'm Canadian, so thats what got me started on her channel but I always found her to just be awkward. But the Blackface stuff what that faaaaack, leaving her friend out to dry. I remember your videos at that time, you did publish a few videos on that. I enjoyed micaela, I should try to get back into some of these channels. Looking forward to the quickrhino story as well. I’ve always wanted to see that video of Kanadajin doing BF, but never could find it. I saw the picture and that shi- is WILD! I’m curious how she interacted with people while in BF 😱 I had been watching most of the main jvloggers that were involved in the sock puppet drama for a while, and it honestly made me sad to hear how hurtful she had been being behind the scenes. She let jealousy get the better of her. She literally was part of the “in” crowd as far as jvloggers, but secretly hated everyone 😵‍💫 I hope she has found happiness though. Even before the drama, she seemed troubled to me.

I did happen to see an update from Kanadajin3. Right after she deleted her entire catalog of videos, she did a live that stayed up as a VOD for a little bit. She was in a Burka I believe, only eyes visible. It's been a while, but in summary, she expressed a deep sort of regret and vitriol for her time on KZbin. Going so far as to recommend that no one ever show their face on the internet, because you don't know who could be watching. I believe she mentioned having been stalked while living in Japan, and that she has left Japan. She eluded to her possibly now being in some sort of religious compound, but that she did not want to be found. She mentioned she started a new channel focused on Islam, but that there would be no way for you to know it was hers. She essentially renounced her identity on KZbin. People can change their minds over time, but the person in that video did not want to ever come back.

I was around for this era of Jvlogging. Hearing Kanadajin and Sharla talk about how they decided fairly young to go to Japan to school made me feel bittersweet for a life-choice I didn't even know was an option. It was time of rose colored glasses for sure - it seemed like Japan was this other world that you could access and succeed in if you only listened. When I saw a new video from Mira I had a "oh wow?? What has she been up to?" moment. I was bummed when she said she was going to delete everything. I can't say I agree with many of her decisions, but I wish her happiness and growth wherever she may be.
@unrested

Very interesting information. Just as a side note Mira replied to this video and then later deleted it. She went on a rant about how the black face video was staged by someone who was trying to frame her and that we as KZbinrs should not be obsessed with fame (not sure why she thinks everyone does this for fame). Nonetheless I thanked her for watching the video and responding and also wished her health in happiness in whatever she was doing these days.

This was a crazy time. I never watched Kanadajin vids I found her a bit annoying when I saw her on the other channels. I started with Gimmeabreakman and got introduced to Rachel and Jun and Abroad in Japan, your channel, Texan In Tokyo, Sharla and a few others who I think don't post vids anymore. When Rachel and Jun posted the vid about the drama I was like "wow kanadajin is Fing crazy and sad" Considering I didn't care for her to begin with this happening was like wow damn. You framing this as part of the collapse of the community does feel about right though. Things changed so much between people at that time but also quite a lot of people left who were part of the community. It's a little sad because I do miss some of the collabs and such between some of the groups but it is what it is. Happy that some of my favorite channels are doing well still and you guys are all still cool people.

God, watching this now I realise just how many misconceptions about Japan I had, and how many of them probably originate from being 11/12 years old and watching kanadajin (my first j-vlogger). I now have a degree in Japanese, COVID did mess up my year abroad but I still got going for a couple of months, and throughout the whole experience sometimes I'd say something and get loads of weird looks. Like, I remember she had this video on menstrual products in Japan, and as a result I was really worried when I went that I wouldn't be able to find my preferred products. Low and behold, it wasn't a problem (beyond me not really knowing the vocabulary initially). Wasn't there something else she said about how you couldn't get hold of ibuprofen/paracetamol without a prescription in Japan? I remember asking my teacher that in first year and she was like "no, what are you on about, you can get that no problem in most drug stores". Even though I had that reassurance I was still a bit worried about getting ibuprofen in Japan (I mean, I'd believed what kanadajin had said for like, 8 years at that point), and I ended up needing some after getting a piercing during my time there - my only complaint was that it was really expensive compared to what I'm used to paying in the UK, but that could have been the store/brand/me being an idiot and paying more than I needed. Again, fine. There probably are other things from those days that I just haven't encountered yet but, absolutely mad the impact her videos had on me. I am grateful that she did nurture my love of Japan back then though. I hope she's doing okay - last I saw she was wearing a niqab having converted to islam, was on her third nikkah, and planning to move to saudi arabia - absolutely all the respect to her for converting to islam and living her life etc. but she did not come across as though these were decisions made in a clear, stable state of mind.

I remember searching for videos about life in japan becasue I was going to study abroad there. I found her channel and watched lots of her videos believing that she was telling the truth. I got to Japan, and learned it was all wrong. I remember making a comment asking if this was a satirical account and if I was just naive. She somehow found my personal email and sent harrassing emails saying evil things. Shortly after that, Rachel and Jun made their video outing her and it suddenly made sense. The harrassment continued for years. Her emails went into my spam account. Lol. She did email someone from my job, (eventually i worked and lived in Japan), she emailed in Japanese. They immediately knew she wasn't native and was attacking me for no reason. They responded with legal threats, and she stopped after that.

Yeah I mean let’s theoretically ignore the black face video and completely absolve her of that and we’d still have comments about marriage and impregnation of 12 year olds on twitter to question. As I said before, she could come back, but it would have to be a full confessional vid acknowledging her checkered past not just another rant on endless denial. Alas there is only one person who will convince Mira that she has a past She needs to confront and that person Is Mira herself. Nothing any of us say will break through that fortress of denial.

I saw Mira’s blackface video, she definitely made it and it was definitely not photoshopped when it was re-uploaded. Not a good move to say the least on her part. Despite that and maybe I’m too kind, I felt sorry for her. The hate towards her seemed disproportionate, until the Rachel & Jun and sock puppet account thing happened. I still feel a little sorry for her, but I never quite understood what motivated her actions. It maybe a bit age-ist of me, but when she started j-vlogging I think Mira was in her 20s & maybe some of her actions - particularly with Rodi - is due to being young.

I feel sorry for her in the sense that she cornered herself and seemed to have had no social setting in her past that had taught her the value of coming clean or apologizing. I don’t have full knowledge of her background but it was depressingly apparent she hadn’t been raised with the experience of certain social situations that would allow her the proper context and POV that would allow her to better understand her situation rather than panic to the point of falling into an uncomfortable vein deeper hole than she had dug for herself.

I don't usually engage in armchair diagnosis, but looking back it sounds like she might have undiagnosed and surely untreated BPD. The lying, the narcissistic behavior, but most importantly: the obsession with certain people are all associated symptoms. She obsessed with these men to the point that she changed her entire personality to fit them. This is why I don't think she could ever attempt a real comeback. It would take self reflection and accountability, but without proper guidance and treatment she's never gonna be able to do it. She might eventually try to come back for shock value, when she's bored or she needs something new to hyper focus on. But unless she gets professional help for whatever she's going through, she's never gonna be able to live off KZbin anymore. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nice topic! Definitely remember this as it happened. I remember Sharla being a pretty big part of it. Kanadajin and Sharla were pretty good friends, or at the least they collabed quiet often for a short time. So from the viewers perspective, it came as a big "wtf?!" seeing Kanadajin go after Sharla and blame her for insane things. It really seemed out of nowhere for us watching. The rest that I remember is all things you've mentioned here. That time period of KZbin is very nostalgic for me. KZbin just doesn't feel the same anymore. It's so commercialized now, and the channels that aren't into that just can never get ahead. Sucks to see. Edit: Hah! Your video from back then popped up! My comment was there for me to read.
