I want more people to watch channels like this. There are too many channels that take rare things and increase misunderstandings in order to increase the number of views.

Damn, Scott. This is some really good information. I know most of it from watching J-vlogs for years on end, but I bet you've helped a few people think twice. I myself thought twice after learning some of this for the first time years ago. And I'm glad, because I can tell I'd be miserable there. It's better to appreciate Japan's good stuff from afar.

Japanese people are kind of like Vulcans from Star Trek. They are known for keeping their emotions repressed. But they can also be the best at providing customer service strictly because they don’t show their emotions to public.

Awesome video and I see some of your points. A lot of what you’re saying does apply but it’s all about learning things the hard way, or going to the Japanese school of hard knocks. Or knowing how to adapt or find the right people. I have never had any issues making friends in Japan. I always participate in martial arts no matter where I have lived in Japan, and meeting people with similar interests tremendously helps. Sometimes going to card stores or arcades can help if you’ve got the right approach. But that’s just been my experience. Some practices I agree with, some I hate but do my best to make do. For example “inside face and outside face,” or the “honne” and “tatamae.” In turn, it creates the “vague form of communication,” or how Japanese form of communication is high context while English is low context. These are things that do naturally cause cultural confusions. For example, some Western countries find the vague form of communication to be rude. I understand that’s normal in Japan, but we do need to analyze this in a more fair and balanced manner for everyone, especially Westerners. Also, as for “bursting out.” At my last job, one of my friends pulled a Christian Bale on our boss. Perhaps he wasn’t right, but if you knew the situation (which could be a book in itself), you would instantly be on his side. Japan’s office politics are a whole new level of bullshit I never want to go through again. He wasn’t fired, but by the end of our contracts, me, him, and five more of us chose not to renew our contracts. As for “running away” from my problems back home. I’ll admit I moved to Japan (for the third time back in 2009) because I was going through a quarter life crisis. It wasn’t being in Japan in itself that helped me through it, but being in a different country on my own motivated me to get a handle of my own shit and take control of myself. Today, I feel better than ever and I truly love living in Japan despite the obstacles I face because I’ve learned how to handle them.

The whole getting angry at the boss thing I have heard happen before and honestly I think in most cases I heard it sounded incredibly justified. There are times I feel like Japanese companies hire foreigners and expect to get away with treating them like 1950s hardcore salaryman and then are shocked when they realize there is no undying loyalty.

if the "senpai" members dont greet you with "notice me senpai" what is even the point hahahah (kidding obviously) I have to share this experience I had in Japan I'm a theatre enthusiast so I watched 3 plays when I was there, in one of them from a town near osaka, I'm in a packed train back to osaka after the play, it is filled to the brim with fans of the theatre, and I stand out as a gaijin. now we are talking about kansai, they are way more brave than the rest of japan. so this tall gorgeous older woman, sees the bag of good I had from the theatre shop, and she starts talking to me in english, "I saw you were at the theatre" "you are a fan" "wasn't the show wonderful" you know typical stuff, and we talked until her stop. it was a great experience.

To be fair on the history topic, most people don't know their own countries history let alone world history. I've met British people that don't know anything about their country pre WW2. But yea, I wouldn't waste my time arguing about it.

Anyone with an alcohol problem should stay clear of Japan. Those are always the first to get fired, fail, or get into trouble. Thats probably obvious, but the drinking/work culture in Japan (and cheap tasty alcohol) seems to really push people over the edge.

I must admit, I had some silly beliefs about Japan before coming here. I thought it was going to be super easy to get laid and that I'd have people offering me a job just because I'm big and tall (like if I visited a firehall they'd offer me a job on the spot). I thought I'd have people starring at me every time I walked down the street and I'd be treated like a celebrity in some places. Its probably because before coming to Japan, my family had exchange students stay at our house and because I was popular with them, I thought all Japanese girls would love me. Yeah weird.

Number 11: The "let me hug you" people. Shaking hands, hugging and kissing on the cheek - Japanese people do not like to do this and any physical contact makes most of them feel uncomfortable. Number 12: The activists. People who publicly demonstrate against climate change, against the politicians and want to change society - you will have a hard time in Japan. Number 13: The "let's hang out at your place" people. You almost never get invited by Japanese people to their place unless there is a big event like first time meeting your girlfriend's parents. Number 14: The work-life-balance people. Yeah...not in Japan. Number 15: The "I want Japan to be like my home country" people. Wait, there is no avantgarde theater scene just around the corner, no bakery where I can get European style bread and my favorite clothing store is nowhere to be found?

This was really good. I agree about the issue of going with little or no research. Japan is not a great fit for everyone regardless of how amazing it is, even speaking of visiting as a tourist. It can be difficult to remember you are not in your own living room, but when you travel anywhere you are so not. Even I cringed at the drinky louts who all were trying to look like they were a member of Cold Play and sitting in the elderly seats on the train with open alcohol containers. It's a place with tremendous history, famous design, and an very orderly society. And the stereotypes about "Asian women" are laughable. Even with most Japanese women being shy, they are a force, and rightfully so.

We Japanese are not also taught this in school, but the most basic knowledge is that Japan's highest authority is not the Japanese Diet. On top of that is a US-led institution. The fundamental parts of Japan's policies, including education, are created by the United States. The strange problems that exist in Japan are not unrelated to this.

The answer would be simple. We don't speak each other's language. It's good for sightseeing, but it's not suitable for permanent residence, right? Even if Japanese people go abroad, they will not be able to get a good job.

Fluency in an indigenous language is required in nearly any high level job in any country anywhere in the world. So that makes sense.

It's common knowledge that gangsters have tattoos all over their bodies. Is it to show off your strength and intimidate others? Isn't it because people get tattoos because they want to affirm wrongdoing? It doesn't matter if it's beautiful or not. Other people cannot judge your true feelings. We Japanese have no choice but to categorize it into the above categories. Why do you put so much emphasis on such things? I don't think people who are trying to develop their inner abilities are interested in tattoos.

@@user-gy3zz5lm6o my tattoos exist only for me. Not to impress, intimidate, or show strength. Mine show remembrance for friends who have died, reminders to live a life filled with kindness and not take the fact that we get to live on earth for granite. No where in the west is it seen or assumed to be “Common knowledge” that tattoos have the negative intentions you imagine. Please try to see the world and other cultures beyond the confines of Japan just as I have tried to see beyond the idiocy of America at times.
