I have been watching since you started during Covid. You have enriched my life so much by your teaching of the gospel. My husband is a truck driver and he listens almost daily while at a port or sitting at a dock waiting to be loaded or unloaded. Please tell your dear wife and your family how much their sacrifice of your time is appreciated. Especially for those of us that live in areas that are being besieged with riots, lawlessness, etc. We so need this light in the wilderness. THANKS SO MUCH! 🙏🙏🙏

In 1970 my dad's job took us to Puerto Rico, Mayaguez. We were one of several families that wrote to salt lake and asked if we could become a branch. We got permission and they sent in missionaries and the first Ward began. My heart is filled with joy that the San Juan Temple has been dedicated and I am thrilled that you were there to witness it! Those poor Utah missionaries got a whole new understanding once they hit Puerto Rico back in the day. They were so close with us and we were their lifeline and the gospel was so alive! Congratulations bro.!!❤️

Youth today want to be Activists. We need to change the world. I love Brother Halverson's discussion of the way John the Baptist did it with people from where they are at. Every missionary needs to listen to this. Especially the sections Counsel to the Repentant (min. 1:15) and Activism or the Doctrine of Christ (min 1:28).

Brother H, your plea for more time reminds me of something c.s. Lewis observed which has brought me great comfort as I've struggled with the same distress. You may already be aware of it. I'm paraphrasing, but he observed that the fact that we complain that there is not enough time is evidence that we are beings out of our element! Just as a fish complains when it is out of water! We are born of an eternal fabric and so no wonder we struggle and holler to high heaven at the shackles of time, limited resources, and distance! As your appreciative students our hearts are with you forever!

Varena, Elder Neil A Maxwell gave a talk where he mentions that we are beings who are out of our element in time. He said time never feels quite right and we always run out of it.
@nextooperfect Жыл бұрын
@@Jan-nn7fq yes! I remember when he made that reference! It delighted me because I had been sharing CS Lewis's earlier observation for years and of course Elder Maxwell quoted Lewis regularly! I guess that's why some of us refer to Lewis as the thirteenth apostle! Lol

Strangely enough, even though there was no “new”material in this weeks studies, unlike the past couple of years, I think this was one of my favorite lessons. It was just so pure and resonating. As a family, we watched the new book of Mormon video where Nephi sees his father’s vision, and how it takes us from scene to scene through the entire history of the church… it was such a fitting video to the lesson you shared this week. Interesting fact about chaff in fireworks and high explosives. Pyrotechnicians, when assembling fireworks, use a balance of chess with the powder, causing the perfect amount of oxygen in a firework, which allows a High velocity and beautiful explosion. Chaff is a facilitator of burning things very quickly! The whole unquenchable fire analogy rings very true

Mark 1:15 The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is a hand, Repent and believe in the gospel. This was an amazing time; the old law was put away and the new covenant came to be by Jesus Christ giving His life for the people. For those who believe in Him will be saved, and He will give you eternal life. When the Holy Spirit came to the people this was the beginning for a new way, the Holy Spirit was not present to the people in the past except to the holies. The baptism of Christ was a demonstration of the Trinty, three persons, ONE God, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit! "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased". Isaiah 46:9 For I am God, and there are no others; I am God and there is none like Me.

I guess I am not sure why you would not mention the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost. This is mentioned in all three gospels, and is a key aspect of the Doctrine of Christ (2 Nephi 31:17,18). Joseph Smith taught very plainly about these 2 baptisms. This doctrine use to be taught in the church, but for some reason it is not taught anymore. I guess it is ok, since no other podcaster mentions it either....I wonder why...?

Hi brother Halverson, I heard what you said about not being able to respond to people. Trying to think of another resource where I could get some questions answered. I am very curious about baptism in the New Testament and how this suddenly became a thing with John the Baptist and then with the New Testament church. It just seems strange that with all of the temple covenants and everything that we never hear anything about baptism and then, all of a sudden, John the Baptist is baptizing people as a new covenant symbol that isn’t ever talked about prior to that. Nobody seems to flinch at the idea of being baptized. It appears that thousands of people were baptized. I’m just curious how that came about so easily as a new covenant like circumcision or going to the temple in Jerusalem and sacrificing lambs. How did baptism all sudden become some new thing that everybody just jumped into without a lot of resistance?

Brother Halvorsen, I just became aware of you and your efforts recently as I listened to your talk on the Faith Matters podcast, and my sister also recommended you. I truly appreciate your helping those who are in a crisis of faith, and found your "Creation, Fall, Atonement" model to be very helpful personally. This is the first episode of this podcast (I listened to it in audio form on my phone) that I've listened to, so I just wanted to provide some constructive criticism on the linguistic front. These are minor, I realize, so don't read too much negativity into these: When mentioning the use of the word "demand" in conjunction with the soldiers in Luke 3, your understanding of it was based on how we modern English speakers would see it, but in fact the same exact Greek verb (epērṓtōn) is used there in v. 14 as is used in v. 10, where it has been translated as "asked". You also made note of Matthew and Luke using different words when John said that people must "bring forth fruit(s) meet/worthy of repentance". You did say that it amounted to the same thing, but it is, in fact, precisely the same Greek adjective (áxion/axíous) in both verses. I had one other concern about your understanding of the image depicted by the phrase "the axe is laid unto the root of the trees". Various Greek lexica seem to indicate that the verb used here (in both Matthew and Luke) depict an image of a woodcutter holding an axe in hand with the blade held against the base of a tree, ready to be drawn back and swung at any moment, rather than the axe lying on the ground by the trees, ready to be picked up and used immediately (as opposed to having to be fetched from wherever it would normally be stored when not in use). My overarching concern is that it can be misleading to rely too heavily on a superficial reading of the English translation, and inferring meanings that are not necessarily supported by the underlying language. I don't know if you'll see this at all, or at least anytime soon, but if/when you do, I hope you take this in the spirit of helpfulness in which it is intended. God bless!

6.-7. My faith crisis came in my 30s. I realized my faith was totally spiritual or feeling based and I felt like I was hovering a foot above the foundation rock Jesus promised us. I studied scriptures to see if I could feel the solid rock under my feet. I found it n what I call physical witnesses and multiple witnesses. I’ve tried to write it down but failed miserably. If your interested in it and you have time feel free to contact me and I’ll send it to you.
