At 10:25 if he was going to "set the independent" he should have grabbed the furthest lever on the right and pushed it all the way up. He pulled down on the train brake, which would actually release the brakes. In the actual incident this is based on, the engineer had the throttle set to Notch 8 (full throttle) and set the independent brake (brakes just for the locomotive) before hopping out to realign the switch and failed to get back on. In that incident the brake shoes burned off due to the intense friction. At 10:53 train controls don't move on their own as if they were possessed. He even later says that he set the throttle to full power. So for accuracy and consistency's sake, before he left the cab the train brake and throttle levers should have been pulled all the way down, the locomotive/independent brake lever pushed all the way up, and the reverser (closest lever) should have been pushed up indicating the train is moving forward.

or even jumped on the slave unit ladder ! but that s what Hollywood is all about ! fictionalizing everything from a REAL Life incident/ lol I wonder what REAL Dewey would have made ov his Portrayal and why he really didn't re board the train ! ? Letz do the REAL life science , Th train would have been moving too slowly in the yard to Burn out the Independent Brake EVEN at Notch 8 power! The Weight ov the train + the level grade , would have acted as a stopping force WITH the Independent brake Equalizing out the Traction force . The Engines , which would have s truggled to maintain output pulling at that weight and with braking in effect , the engines would have stalled or at the very least lost momentum and drive ! It would have therefore NEVER have gotten upto or past 20mph ! BUT , I believe therefore, that the Independent was NEVER set ! and the 777 Engineer was a liar , which is clear , according to the film ! When he claimed that he needed Notch 8 to get rolling on a " it was 39 car s " . lol. Any train driver in America would have known that you d NEVER put that much load stress on your wheels on a 39 car consist which tbh , is a pretty LIGHT and standerd Train compared to some that are 3 times as much . so only having 2 Loco s on the head end would have plenty ov traction force aWITHOUT "gunning it " at notch 8! wgich, in real life would caused wheel spin (at the very least! ) and thus s lowi8ng iit down all the more ! . Apart grom this Obv error. I still enjoyed the movie. I just wondered what REALLY happened at that train yard that morning !

Yeah... North American train brakes are... odd? Each car has its own air reservoir, which is refilled from the brake pipe (the big air hose connecting the cars) reduce the brake pipe pressure (moving the train brake lever in the cab for example) and the main car reservoir applies the brakes, lose your brake pipe and you lose the main reservoir, dumping the air and the brakes lock, BUT to apply brakes you NEED air in the main car reservoir, and that leaks out over time with no brake pipe pressure, which is why hand brakes are used to hold the train in place. So if you DO NOT connect the brake pipe and charge the air in the cars, you won't have any brakes at all. (May be wrong, am not an actual engineer, just have lots of dumb knowledge)

I just watched the movie for the first time since becoming a locomotive mechanic and becoming certified for yard track locomotive operation. I did not realize just how much this movie got wrong that just stare me in the face now
@hectorguzman84356 жыл бұрын
speed150mph EXACTLY!!! I’m an engineer myself and I just laugh about how many inaccuracies are in the movie. Of course anybody in the audience that doesn’t know about the railroad itself gets amazed by the action involved
@speed150mph6 жыл бұрын
Hector Guzman you’d think though that they would actually take the time to show the actors the controls and the basics of how to run the thing. You know yourself the units themselves are pretty straight forward to actually operate. It would definitely help with the cringeworthy moments like “WILL! Hit the independent!!!!” And he throws the automatic into emergency. 😂 also the way they showed the train taking off on its own? Instead of having a possessed locomotive that can move controls on his own, why not do something plausible like have numbnut Dewey throw his lunch box on the dash, and have it fall down and knock it into notch 8. Then the only question you have to answer is why it didn’t go into Penalty PCS?
@codyniehaus88516 жыл бұрын
You guys bring up good points. Why not have a realistic reason for the locomotive to go onto notch 8? I also love that the dumbass in the cab says he will apply the independent, but then applies the automatic brakes instead, and then a minute later magically the independent (for no reason because the automatic was just used) moves? Also, from experiance of being a railroad conductor in the past, it's a big no no to leave airhoses unconnected like that. Those guys would be so fucked for doing that.
@speed150mph6 жыл бұрын
Cody Niehaus I agree with all but the last. The last is a little tricky. I don’t know the rules for your railroad but we dont usually have the air on for flat switching in the yard. The air isn’t usually all hooked up until the Carmen come and do their consist inspection. However this is a long train with the road power already hooked up which means either it’s just came in or is ready to go out so yeah the air probably should have been on.
@codyniehaus88516 жыл бұрын
@@speed150mph when I worked the switcher, the yard was a bowl meaning it was flat in the middle but the ends of the yard had hills. I always hooked up the air hoses on trains that were big because with all the weight on it, our 2 GP38's just using the locomotive brakes would take some time to get a big train to stop. Also I've had coworkers run through switches because they weren't counting on the extra stopping distance due to the weight.

@AtTheCrossingProductions5 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. The only part that's necessarily difficult is braking with air and dynamics but once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy. However air brakes are not necessarily accurately represented in this movie to a certain extent

@johnnyboi11253 жыл бұрын
He didn’t set the independent all the way and also left the lever a bit open so 777 & 767 were basically fighting the independent brakes since there was still some throttle, not to mention he didn’t tie to air brakes
