Part 2 WATCH HERE: • 🔥THAI MARRIAGE from HE...
Steve Rosse is an American writer and author for the memoir called “Leaving Thailand” and currently runs the weird and wild KZbin Channel - Postcards from Turtle Beach.
Steve Rosse was a city-raised man, working and living in New York as a set decorator for the film industry. A short sabbatical in South East Asia turned into a 7-year love affair with the island of Phuket. Steve like many other ex-pats who have made Thailand their home worked in various jobs from DJ to PR manager to the writer for “The Nations” one of the biggest news publications in Phuket, Thailand during the 90s.
Take a step back in time with us in today's episode of the Fruiting Body Podcast, we discuss the rules of Bangla walking street, the golden message behind the name Patong, and what Phuket was like during the early stages of its tourist years.
Don’t miss out on this blast from the past episode as we explore the life of Steve Rosse, his infamous interview with Tiger Woods, Racism in Thailand, and the North vs. South dilemma.

For anyone at all interested, I’m giving this a 👌 relatively speaking 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ regarding pre tourism days. This man is well read, has listened carefully & remembered a vast repository of stories of factual events Thai style! (-signed a very fortunate Canuck traveller to Thailand in ‘80) Cheers

I was at Phuket back in 1982. (It was on the “backpackers’ agenda” for SE Asia. Basically it was full of locally owned seaside bungalows and locally owned restaurants. Karon beach was not developed ( no road connecting it to Patong beach. I remember walking butt naked along Karon beach - nothing but coconut trees in the distance. ( Note: I returned 12 years later and I was in shock. Not a quiet little island anymore.)

What people under the age 50 do not understand is that in the late 1980s the level of English knowledge in Thailand in the 80s was almost nothing. The fact that the interviewer cannot imagine there was a time when there was no convenience stores in Thailand is just so indicative. My first trip to Thailand was in 1989 and it was as Steve Rosse says: NOBODY knew English.

16:00 7 Elevens in the 80s ? There was none in the whole of Thailand (a couple of shops started in 1989 in BKK open from 7am to 11pm not 24 hours then). Hahahaha. I was in Phuket in 1987 and There was nothing except what Steve said. There was no airport either, probably under construction or no flights. I went by bus all the way from BKK. 1 full night travel.

About the double pricing "racism", (I know there's racism, just not sure that's part of it), do Asians from Korea, Japan, China, etc also have to pay the double price? If not, yeah, it's racism. If they do, well..... maybe not. I honestly don't know. I'm white. I never asked.

I am here just for Steve Rosse. By the end of this I just had to jump in with corrections. This interviewer is absolutely clueless. I mean, asking “How did people get to Phuket Island before there was an airport?” As if astonished at the idea… seriously? And to correct Steve when Steve refers to the Chongi prison camp in Singapore by insisting it was in Hong Kong… I mean it is the name of the national airport of Singapore today, and it is a one hour direct flight from Phuket. Poscaster dude needs to go read History of Thailand by Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit before attempting to interview any more salty old dogs.

If a farang is a Thai citizen, they will get Thai price. Is the fact a Thai does not need visa to enter and remain in Thailand, racist?

Two tier pricing can be interpreted as racism, but I think reflects the socio-economic difference between people, i.e. how much can you afford. Most whities are mostly more wealthy than most thais.

Why no mention of the racism that is Bangkok Thai and Chinese elite verse the Esan/Lao rural peasants? The reason the military junta runs Thailand is because of the racism. But apparently the difference in National Park pricing is vastly more important.

Sorry Steve but your knowledge of Japanese history is woeful. As for.."they were one ruler"..not until the Tokugawa shogunate finally united Japan, after the battle of Sekigahara, in 1600.It also was no "shock" to them when other people arrived. They had deep connections with the Chinese, they had unsuccessful invasions by the Mongols and for over 15 centuries, the relationship between Japan and Korea was characterized by cultural exchanges, economic trade, political contact and military confrontations and knowledge of mainland Asia was transmitted via Korea to Japan. The first contact between Japan and Portugal occurred in 1543 when three Portuguese merchants landed on Tanegashima Island at the southern tip of the Japanese Archipelago after their boat was blown off course. After the Portuguese first made contact with Japan in 1543, a large scale slave trade developed in which Portuguese purchased Japanese as slaves in Japan and sold them to various locations overseas. Then the Spanish and christianity.."Francis Xavier was a Jesuit born in the Basque Country of Spain. He was the first to bring Christianity to Japan and was known as the apostle to the East. He landed in Kagoshima in 1549, and for the subsequent two-plus years he proselytized in such places as Hirado and Yamaguchi, baptizing more than 500 people" Then from 1597-1639 they started executing christians and the Tokugawa shogunate banned Christianity in 1614, it then ceased to exist publicly. So they had plenty of exposure to and knowledge of other people & countries before Perry arrived in 1853.
