My favorite part about the opening is it's totally heartbreaking... from Carl's POV. If you rewatch it thinking about Ellie, you can tell in her final moments that she was totally satisfied with her life. Once she met Carl, it was never about going to Paradise Falls, it was about going to Paradise Falls *with Carl*. Living her entire life in that house with the man she loved was the important bit. Carl realizes this in the end, when he casually tosses out all of his furniture and eventually lets even the house go. They're just things, and they were never the important part of his life with Ellie. She was.

I remember when Conan Obrien talked about seeing Up in the theater with his kids and how all the fathers were biting their fists and stuff to keep from bawling in front of their kids when Ellie dies, and I thought, 'oh come on.' And then months later I decided to watch it with a date, and when it got to that part I pretended to stretch and lean my head way back so she couldn't see me wiping my eyes. It's some of the most effective storytelling I've ever seen, and anyone who doesn't feel anything must have a stone for a heart.

The most amazing thing about this movie is the beginning. It starts out listening to the children about their dream, then for the next 10 to 12 minutes there is not talking, but you know how their dreams are changing just by them laying there looking at the clouds. You learn she can not get pregnant so they start saving for their trip, and how things keep them from their dream trip. How he finally books the trip, and then on the same hill as he is going to give her the tickets to South America, she becomes sick, she goes into the hospital and dies without knowing he had bought the trip. I never have watched a movie which triggered so much emotion without any words being spoken.

Absolutely agree. My all time Pixar top 3 as well, they are Pixar at it’s best imo. I think it’s the recipe. Depict a unique well written narrative, explore some kinda heavy real world themes then juxtapose exciting and interesting characters, and absolutely floor you with vivid stunning visuals. They just give you such a good sense of escapism that is critical for animated movies and it hits the nail on the head. Not that other movies don’t do that too but theses 3 just do it the best.

The first fourteen minutes of _UP_ is one of the best animated shorts ever made. Even if they hadn't made the rest of the movie that intro would have been enough. Since you're "such a goddamned romantic," if you've never seen it you really must watch _Moonstruck_ (1987). It is that rare thing, a non-sappy romantic comedy. More than just a romcom, it is a film about family. It stars Cher, Nicolas Cage, Danny Aiello, Olympia Dukakis, and Vincent Gardenia. Nominated for six Oscars it won three: Best Actress (Cher); Best Supporting Actress (Dukakis); Best Original Screenplay (Shanley).

I so enjoyed the movie and your reaction. The world would be better if there were more people like you. Ellie, Carl, Russell, Doug, and Kevin, too.
