Someone linked this to me and I'm like "Wait what? People are talking about my deck...?" I keep forgetting it was the most funded, most backed tarot kicsktarter ever haha. Thank you for saying such kind things!! I've been totally blown away by people's reactions. The facebook group was unofficial, I gave them my blessing and they ran with it. I also have a separate discord full of awesome people. I'm working on the podcast I promised for the 1M stretch goal, hoping to bring it out in another couple months. This really made my day, thank you so so so much.

Hi Arlene! Sorry for any confusion. Seven is the creator of the Alleyman's Tarot. And in case that's not what you meant, all the decks that I mentioned in this video are linked in my description box. And all the contributing artists to the Alleyman's Tarot are credited in the updates on the original Kickstarter campaign, which you can find here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/713books/the-alleymans-tarot :) Hope that clears things up!

i feel as though just calling it "your deck" discredits all the work from the artists that were needed in order to make it happen. the artists are what made the deck possible, without them it would not exist. congratulations to the artists, i hope they are all properly compensated!! 🦋
@publishinggoblin10723 жыл бұрын
@@battlebunny-ln5wy If you looked at the campaign, saw any of the stretch goals, you wouldn't even make this mistake haha. They have all been hugely credited and compensated-- half the campaign page is just a credits list of every artist that took part, while most of the project updates were deeper credits that included links to their work, and literally every **other stretch goal** just unlocked more pay for all the artists who took part (not including myself). And on that note, I am literally one of the contributing artists, and I contributed the most cards to the deck by a large margin! It's 'my deck' because I had the idea, put in the year+ of work to pitch to 100s of artists sticking to a core aesthetic, ran the campaign (Which is a full time job, no joke-- I was working 12 hour days repeatedly at the start due to the shear volume of questions, messages, comments, dms on social media, etc I received as a sole project runner) am the one who lined up the manufacturer, the fulfillment center, and has pledged my time to handle every deck that featured a hand-made item (1000~ orders), as well as the 350 signed copies and the 500 'touched by the alleyman' decks, which Im staining, painting, burning, and otherwise maiming by hand myself in my apartment. It's 'my deck' because I put in the hundreds and hundreds of hours to get the artists on board and keep in the aesthetic and run the project and design my 20~ something cards that filled out the remaining gaps and to create, write, edit, and layout the guidebook which is itself an art object which I made digitally to reflect the Alleyman's own notebook, with digitally made stains for the pages and fake washi tape designs I designed and doodles I did to digitize into the book. I wrote the guide entirely on my own in-character, I designed it, the deck box, the tarot cloth, the satin bags, the designs for the wooden boxes, and did all the sourcing of awesome artisan artists to make hand-made bags and boxes, gave them full credit, what they asked for in pay and more, and shared links to their work for backers to follow up on. I saw that a fan was making really cool unique bags for their own alleyman deck, and I asked if they wanted to do it for backers and they said yes. I gave them full credit for the bags and connected them to 50 excited backers who wanted the bags. The reason I was able to do that was because this is entirely my project. I do not discredit the artist's work-- OBVIOUSLY. That's WHY I paid out so much to the artists involved, and why every other stretch goal was an increase in pay for the artists. That's why I gave them full credit on the campaign page AND in updates that shared more links to their work AND in the guidebook with the same links so that people know exactly where cards are from and can go support them! But at the same time, The artists involved (those who just licensed old card designs) did 10 minutes of work for this project. They liked my pitch, signed a contract, and sent me two image files. A few artists I approached who were friends wanted to make original pieces, and definitely spent more than 10 minutes. But I alone have spent literally over a year of work making this happen, ensuring I was fair to the artists, making my own cards, making the guide, the branding assets, building the project page, writing and making the contracts with every single one of the 130 artists involved, INCLUDING publishers of previous iterations of the decks in certain cases, or conceptual designers who didn't even illustrate the cards, because I am committed to making sure artists are MORE than fairly compensated. I get that you think projects just appear and magically happen, then the deck gets to you, but not only did I do **the most work for the deck's cards**, I also did every single other element of bringing it to life, all the design work, all the brand design, all the project building on Kickstarter, then the project running (with 20,000 backers and just me, I am the one who responds to the hundreds of messages, comments, and emails alone.), then the project printing, managing, and fulfillment, not to mention the handling of 130 artists, management of contracts, pay, and more. I will be the one drawing up tax files for 100+ of the American artists who took part. Me, alone. Project management, especially as a solo indie creator, is the vast majority of doing creative work. And I get that it's invisible to most people, that you don't bother thinking about the 100's of crewmembers who bring a movie to life and probably only think of the actors, or the director, but the vast majority of the work that gets done to bring a piece of art to life gets done in the background by people you never even hear of. It's my deck because without me, it could not have happened at all. It was my vision. It was my extensive labor. And it was also my art. Even if we discounted the countless hours I have put in running this whole thing, if we just counted it by cards? In the end there were 137 cards in the core deck, then 17 cards in booster 1, 2, and 3, 8 cards in booster 4 I designed alone, and 17 blank cards I did the backs for in a final booster. That's 213 cards total. I provided 20 cards to that. Everyone else provided 1 card a piece, or in fringe cases, 2. I largely went for cards that were from already existent decks. They already made a deck for it and made their money on it, all I was asking for was the ability to use a single card from their deck, for which they were obscenely compensated for again, less than 10 minutes of work. For those who made new cards from scratch, there's a REASON I let them set their own licensing fee, so they could value their time properly for the work they put in. Then for most of them I paid them 16x that simply because I could. Your discrediting of the person who put in hundreds of hours to make something happen when no one else put in more than 10 minutes is just really gross. I AM one of the artists. And if you had done ANY research at all, you would have seen I had obscenely overpaid all the other contributing artists. Most licensed their art for $100 or less. EACH OF MY STRETCH GOALS double or tripled that amount. In the end I owed EACH ARTIST $1400 bonus pay, but I typo'd $1600 once and even though none of the artists were going to hold me to it, I decided to just pay them the extra. They all get free decks, free items, full credit, their licensing fees, AND $1600 bonus pay for something that they spent less than 10 minutes replying to emails on. And on top of that? I LET THEM SET THEIR OWN LICENSING RATES. I didn't make them sign up for any amount, I let each artist CHOOSE how much they wanted to license for. Some chose $0, some chose $100, one chose $1000, another chose .5% of profits. I didn't say no to anyone. And I didn't owe them the pay bonus, it wasn't part of the contracts. I could have just run away with it, but I didn't. Everyone got the pay they asked for and then some. All told I paid the artists more than Im making from the project by a lot, and that's okay because that's how I have always treated artists on my projects. If it sounds like Im angry, it's because I am haha. Your comment is so incredibly disrespectful. Please try to be better to creators, you have no idea how much work we put into things to make them possible.

One thing I find super telling about the Maven Tarot is that you can see when the management account last logged into Kickstarter - it was July 28th, the day they posted the project. They literally haven’t logged in since they set everything up. To me it sounds like a bunch of kids who have no real idea what they’re doing and are making it up as they go, which isn’t great for the consumer. Props to the person who linked this video in their comments though - hopefully Lisa’s wise words will help them catch a clue.

As it turns out I’m not backing the newest edition of the Lion’s Gateway either, but that’s because I think the second edition was perfect 😗🤌 and wouldn’t change a thing about it 😆. This was such an entertaining video but it also made me happy to see how much more discerning I’ve gotten in that I have very comfortably said “nah” to 99% of these decks already. I think the Forhaxa is the only one on this list I’ve actually pre-ordered (MJ has said that it won’t be going mass market btw) and that’s just because I’ve been wanting a deck based on Norse folklore for ages and this is the first one I’ve seen where I really love the artwork. The new Augenblick momentarily tempted me but I decided I prefer the square edition I already have. And oh, I did pre-order the new VicRo because I’m excited about the prospect of a more diverse edition…if I end up liking it I’ll rehome my old third edition. But everything else….holding off! 💪

This was a fun watch :)! Even though I've managed to slow down on deck buying these last couple of months, I did back the New Choice Tarot de Marseille and preordered The Victorian Romantic Tarot. And I might end up getting the Seasons of the Witch Yule Oracle, it looks so magical! The Förhäxa Tarot looks beautiful, too, but I'm so over waiting months for the packages to arrive and paying for customs/taxes and the expensive postage, that I've decided not to buy anything outside of EU in the near future. Which makes it easier to say no to many tempting indie decks :D. Still looking forward to the next episode in this series, it's always fun to see beautiful tarot art even if I'm not going to purchase any of the decks!

Okay, lots of great decks. But I need to talk about "Aunt Lily's". This Strenght card just made me cry - in a good way. My sister had cancer, defeated it, went to rehab a few months ago and is now slowly getting back into everyday life. From the beginning she had the best and strongest attitude towards this disease and her body and I am so incredibly proud of her. And "Strength" is the card that always makes me think of her - because at no point did she demonize her disease, her body, her pain and suffering, at no point did she lose hope. I told her about that and she (who is not really into Tarot or Witchcraft) ordered a necklace with "Strength" as a pendant because she could totally relate to my interpretation. Seeing a girl (it's perfectly gender-neutral, but I see my sis in this so I see girl) in the hospital with no hair hugging the lion in the "Aunt Lily's" tarot. This is just the perfect depiction of Strength for me. I think because of this card alone, I need this deck. I usually don't preoder or back. But seeing this card just right now in your video made me cry and I had to tell my sister about it... That's the first time ever I had such a strong reaction to a tarot card/art work. Just wow.

Thank you so much for sharing your story, Lisa!! Sending MASSIVE amounts of love to both you and your sister. I'm so glad to hear that she's doing a bit better now. It sounds so cool, a great expansion on the idea of making a "master deck" with your favorite cards from a variety of decks. But I can also appreciate it for it's inspiration and aspirational qualities. The artwork isn't really my style, but again, who cares? There are some things that just deserve support, and I see this as one of them. Inclusion and diversity have finally found their time here in this dimension. This is the deck that most resonates with the future I want to see.

I browsed through the comments and didn't see anyone respond to your question about green bronze, so I thought I'd answer. To my knowledge, bronze doesn't turn green. I do know for a fact that COPPER turns green, however. I live in Iowa and there are 4 green domes and one gold dome on our capital building. But the green domes are actually copper and the gold is real hold. I think the green domes have only ever been copper when it was first built (before color photography 😓) because it would be way too expensive to clean, I think.

YES! You are right. I remember asking Peggy about it after this video (or someone?) who confirmed it was copper not bronze. :D

My hot Take on the postage stamp deck is that their numbering of the major arcana is incorrect and, when brought up to them? They are more worried about the aesthetic than the numerical usability of the deck.
@Lisa_Papez3 жыл бұрын
Yikes!! I hope they listen to feedback on that! I didn't spot it when I was filming but that would really make the deck less usable for me, too!

I just mentioned this! Your comment and her lack of interest in it made me realize this was not designed to actually be a useable Tarot deck at all.

I immediately went ahead and backed the Aunt Lily’s Tarot after this video. I agreed with everything you said about the deck and the art and I had originally decided to not back it but then I saw the queen of cups on the campaign page and I went ahead and backed it for the small deck.

So looking forward to when Seasons of the witch Yule comes out! And I will probably get Förhäxa by MJ too😅 I think I read on her IG that she will only publish her decks independently from now on.

i agree labyrinth is one of those things that if you didn't see it as a child it just seems weird. i saw it as a teenager with my friends who knew it from childhood and they kept saying 'isn't this great!' and i could only answer 'umm...'

Wow...so many things. I have a really short 'must purchase' list right now, Crimson Asteria Tarot, Smoke Ash and Ember, and Jamie Sawyer's 336 (I just NEED that red sketch deck. I have Tarot Avatara by Gabie Angus West coming (I am an educated art lover, and Frieda Kahlo fan) and of course Spirit Keeper's Tarot, Revalation. There's a little voice in the back of my head that occasionally says, "that's it, you have enough." Well, maybe it is! 🤔 we shall see.

Copper gets a green patina, not bronze. There are many bronze statues. If they are outside the chemical reaction from the elements snd bird excrement can discolor, but that shouldn’t happen in this case.

Hi, Lisa! Such a fun Video. It was nice to hear your take on upcoming decks. For the first time in a very long time, there are hardly any that really call to me. The one I'm on the fence about is Tarot of Oppositions. I find it interesting but maybe not interesting enough to want to have! I think the Fantôme Tarot is stunning! And "Futuristic Atlantis" is a great way to define it. I just love all the bold and beautiful colours in the cards. So it looks like I like very few right now. My bank account thanks me! 😂 I ADORE the Adventure Cat. I'm connected with the creator on Instagram. I've been following the development of that deck since the beginning. And lucky me, I was fortunate enough to win a giveaway of one of the decks. I am over the moon and I can't wait to receive it. Thank you for sharing this video. Wishing you well. 💖

I'm SO excited for Season's of the Witch/Yule. I pre-0rdered months ago. I love everything vintage, so of course I ordered Mystical Medleys. It's so adorable. THE COOLEST backs ever! I passed on Alleyman.....I don't normally like decks of many artists. But I might reconsider it. I was so happy Baba reprinted Victorian Romance and I HOPE they keep reprinting others before they retire, or whatever they are doing. The problem with the Postal deck is the numbering is wrong. The Fool is numbered as 1. It's been pointed out to the creator. But they can't change the art now. This tells me it might have been created by someone who doesn't really know tarot. So that's a deal breaker for me. God, that Maven Tarot.....pass! Here's an "un" for them.....unfunded. lol Thanks so much for doing this great video!!!

Yep! There are pictures of each of the main cards at the original Kickstarter campaign at www.kickstarter.com/projects/713books/the-alleymans-tarot/description, and if you go through the campaign updates you can also see most or all of the expansion cards.

I'm just gonna comment a million times on this video and I'm ok with it. So the hierophant card in the Labyrinth tarot is Hoggle, and I don't know why they made him the hierophant... Isn't hierophant a teacher? Like a sage teacher? Cuz Hoggle did a lot more learning than teaching. And how have you not watched the whole movie, Lisa?!!!! It is a Jim Henson movie! 😨

ROFL i knowwww i really should watch it at some point, just to satisfy the curiousity at the very least!

Because Hoggle knows the rules and traditions of the Labyrinth and tries to impart them to Sara.

@@Lisa_Papez Yeah that's USD. With shipping I feel like it's going to put the deck to 85-90 bucks and that just seems like too much. I love supporting KS decks and indie artists, but yikes.
