Thanks so much. I had a blood clot in my brain that made things that were once so easy a serious issue. I had been trying to work through this for several days and quite a few serious issues. Having very little short term memory I have to learn things over and over like a Goldfish ... Eventually they stick. I didn't really need to root it but my Note 3 just decided it wasn't happy and I had moved it up to Android 9 ... so it is a habit .. Appreciate your effort ,,.,,.,,

What about the method of installing the OTA update straight via the system and before rebooting installing magisk into idle slot? Does that work for you?
@MaowDroid
@MaowDroid 4 жыл бұрын
On the latest versions of Magisk Manager the option to install to inactive slot (used for OTA updating) has been removed temporarily due to bootloop issues from how Google has changed how OTAs are handled, hence I couldn't demonstrate with the OTA. It did work previously when the option was available, I think if you're not coming from the canary builds of Magisk Manager and if you're using a version prior to 8.0 you'll get the option, but you might end up in a bootloop.

EDIT - Success! The only strange thing was that every command in the log from flashing the image had an error after the command ie: 'Sending' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I did switch back to the Beta Channel before flashing. THANKS FOR THE GREAT TUTORIAL!!! Original post: I'm a bit nervous after having major issues several months ago. I've downloaded the October Android 11 files, have everything ready to go with Manager on Update Channel - Canary. From @O Book post it was suggested to use Beta, but there wasn't any feedback from him as to whether it worked for him. I have uninstalled all modules except for ViPER4Android FX (which is a nightmare to setup). Magisk has been updating frequently, currently on 21004 Magisk and 310 (12) Manager. Each time Magisk updates I create a new magisk_patched.img and replace the one in my Platform Tools folder. I've gone through your video several times and am ready to pull the trigger - am I missing anything?
@MaowDroid
@MaowDroid 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken, thanks for sharing your journey updating the phone; and yeah you should have been just fine in using either the Beta or Canary builds as they both support Android 11, with varying bugs between them. But that command prompt error is quite interesting; since 'sending:' should just be output that's shown in the window, I guess you can ignore that if things worked out. :D

So after flashing the bootloader & radio images your phone is no longer detected in fastboot? Try rebooting your phone into the bootloader again and also try another USB port if you can. If your phone is still not detected, try boot into recovery mode and sideload the Android 11 full OTA using ADB. developers.google.com/android/ota Boot into recovery mode > (something like:) Install update from ADB sideload Then use this command: adb sideload [drag in OTA zip]

Hi Mad Martian, I would probably uncheck that as we don't use the recovery mode (from what I recall that was aimed at the S10). If it gives you problems, you can always repatch from Android 11.

I am on android 11 on my pixel 2 xl and I would like to know how to root it. Could you make a video for that in the future? My main concerns are: What is going on with the slots... There are 2 slots but why this video doesn't mention something? When do I need to switch slots? Shouldn't I flash both slots? Also i read somewhere that I must not have a pin password when I want to root. Will it brick the device? Honestly a dedicated video for my situation would be so helpful but I know that it takes so much time and effort to make so I understand
@MaowDroid
@MaowDroid 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aris! I'll be making a full-blown, start from scratch rooting video for Android 11 once Magisk stable supports Android 11, and hopefully that's over the next few days: twitter.com/topjohnwu/status/1308740670706708488 This video doesn't mention slots because they're not super important right now when updating (but I'll say that sometimes that makes updating a little more tricky as the system might swap slots for you without warning), and also when rooting it doesn't really matter which slot you're on if you're doing it for the first time. You don't need to switch slots unless you've also flashed the system images to a particular slot; flashing to both slots is useful but you would just need to flash to the current slot as we're not looking to swap slots. > Also i read somewhere that I must not have a pin password when I want to root. This is mainly focused on rooting using TWRP to flash Magisk, or back then, SuperSU. Removing your screen lock allowed TWRP access to your /data parition so you could flash Magisk after you had copied it over to your internal storage. As TWRP doesn't support Android 11 right now, we are just using Magisk Manager to patch the stock boot.img to install Magisk onto it, which doesn't require TWRP and doesn't require you to remove your screen lock. You'll hardly be able to brick your device, generally speaking if you can flash the stock images again you should be fine. I hope this helps. :)

@MaowDroid
@MaowDroid 4 жыл бұрын
I'd probably try swap up the cables & USB ports and ensure that you're using a USB A to USB C cable (which seems to work best, rather than having a Type C to C cable). If it's still not working out for you, yep you can sideload the OTA for Android 11. Download the full OTA here: developers.google.com/android/ota Boot your phone into recovery mode and select install package from ADB sideload then use this command: "adb sideload [drag in OTA zip]" Then let your phone boot up. You can then flash the patched boot.img you made in this video to root your phone after.

Also I aware that the logs on my phone while flashing the zip file is a bit different from yours, it shows "vendor_a", "system_a" instead of "vendor_b", "system_b" on yours, is this the reason why "no valid slot to boot" appears?
@MaowDroid
@MaowDroid 4 жыл бұрын
Hi M L, sorry to hear you had some trouble booting up with Magisk installed (it looks like). Flashing on different slots, it doesn't matter at all as it depends on if you've taken OTAs, or flashed ROMs before; but it shouldn't matter too much. Perhaps the patched image is corrupt in some way, but I would try patching the stock boot.img again using Magisk Manager (and make sure that the update channel is set to either Beta or Canary); and then flashing it. As always, you can revert this by flashing the stock boot.img to the boot partition so you don't have to flash the entire update again.

@MaowDroid
@MaowDroid 3 жыл бұрын
You would not be doing this, since this would flash the stock ROM on your phone, replacing LineageOS. Once you have LOS installed, you would take OTAs from their own System Updater, or you would sideload the update .zip in LOS recovery. Although, as you update LOS, you may lose root access if you just go through the normal system update, as Magisk is installed to the ramdisk.

You can directly update but you'll lose root access until you can boot up and patch the boot.img again. We used to be able to take the OTA and keep root using Magisk Manager but that doesn't work anymore as Google has changed how they do OTA updates, which will lead you to a bootloop. Did you use the beta (v21.0+) or canary build of Magisk? Does your phone boot up with the stock boot image? You can try flashing that the same way you flashed the magisk_patched.img. "fastboot flash boot [drag in stock boot.img].

Generally you should be able to revert to a working state if you flash the stock boot.img 👍 so you don't have to go through the whole OTA flashing. Try again if the latest canary build is newer than what you had flashed before. Sometimes things just don't work out with the canary builds as they don't go through testing (as thorough). 😁 Also sometimes it's a bad patch. Hi Jason! I would try uninstalling Magisk Manager (or maybe if you had hidden it before, it would just be called "Manager" by default), and reinstalling the latest version. You could also try clearing data for the stub (if hidden) or the app and try again.

Hi Micheal, this part of your question I'm not sure as you've mentioned that you've already updated to Android 11: I accidentally downloaded the OTA update and cant seem to find a way to find and delete the OTA folder. But for rooting, yep you can follow along and probably skip on flashing the factory image, but you'll still need to download it so you can use Magisk Manager to patch it (which does not require root).

Hey! Sorry to hear that, but yeah be careful about that and future modules! You can boot into Safe Mode (Android) and Magisk will remove all modules when you reboot. If you can't use the button combination to boot into Safe Mode, try this: Flash stock boot.img Reboot phone into Safe Mode When phone is rebooting, force into bootloader by holding Power + Vol. Down Flash the magisk_patched.img and use this command: fastboot continue Otherwise, if your device is accessible by ADB when it is in the bootloop (G logo), you can run this command (ensure the ADB shell is elevated): > adb shell $ su # magisk --remove-modules

Hi Bujar! For that same method to work (and it would for the Pixel 4, I don't have my Pixel 4 anymore so I can't make a video, although I already have made an 'unrooting' video for it, quite similar with flashing the factory images to both slots). All you would need is an unlocked bootloader to do that. The closest thing you could do without unlocking the bootloader is flashing the full OTA (although that might not change slots for you to do the other side).

Android 11 restricted access for apps trying to access other data folders. developer.android.com/about/versions/11/privacy/storage#other-apps-data This probably says it well: Android 11 expands upon this restriction. If your app targets Android 11, it cannot access the files in any other app's data directory, even if the other app targets Android 8.1 (API level 27) or lower and has made the files in its data directory world-readable. Not sure if that can be worked around having root access + a root file manager.

You don't have to downgrade, and I think if you did you'd be looking at resetting your phone! You don't need to have root already to patch boot images with Magisk Manager.

Hi Ashish, yeah perhaps it was one of your Magisk modules you had installed as I had mentioned. Strange that it can't boot into recovery mode, but we shouldn't need that to rescue your phone. Try this first: When at the G logo, see if you phone is accessible by adb. Try running: adb shell "magisk --remove-modules" Your phone will automatically reboot with all the modules removed. If that is not possible, try flashing the stock boot.img from the factory image (the one you used with Magisk Manager during the patching stage). The command goes: fastboot flash boot [drag in stock boot.img] Once you are in, uninstall Magisk Manager, then download and install Magisk Manager again; then reboot your phone back into the bootloader and flash the 'magisk_patched.img' again: fastboot flash boot [drag in magisk_patched.img]. I hope this helps. :)
