Hey there! I'm pretty new to learning Japanese, and I'm loving learning it! I'm talking a Chinese class and was inspired to learn Japanese! I love the language and the culture and I'm trying to get really good at it too! I want to hopefully get fluent in speaking, reading and writing it, and I've been writing down all the characters from hiragana and katakana on pieces of paper to study. Brother you look sharp with the glasses. I bought your book on Amazon and I love it. It's very fun. Also, you are a great teacher. I am 29 from Toronto and I want to learn Japanese so I can travel there and take pictures with my Japanese Camera lol! I think every camera brand is Japanese. Anyway, Japan is very interesting and beautiful and it would be a shame if I could not speak with people there because of a language barrier. What other languages do you speak?

This man goes at a slow pace and encourages long-term absorption, he teaches you to be proud of small accomplishments, he gives example with counter example, so that you understand things around what’s being taught, he immediately makes things that you are learning functional and he does all this while not overwhelming the student or gouging them with social psychology parlor tricks. He hast to be the most amazing educator I found in my entire life of being a lifelong student of everything. As I was picking up the digital versions of the books, I couldn’t find the second kanji level. Does anyone know where I’m supposed to look for the Kindle version because it wasn’t on Amazon through his links?

First, I have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying your teaching style. Your touches of humor really make these videos even more fun to watch. I say "watch," but in truth, I listen to your videos while commuting to work. I figured this is an effective way of making use of the 10 hours per week I spend in the car. The issues I have listening to the videos in the car are: 1. sometimes I do not know what is going on because I cannot see the screen, 2. sometimes I cannot understand the pronunciation, and 3. I rarely have the time to read the lessons online, although I do understand that this is a significant component of learning. I figured if I can learn to speak Japanese through hearing, then learning to read won't be too bad since I already know what the word means. Is there, or do you think there ever will be, an audio-only version of your lessons? I haven't purchased a membership because, honestly, I am still "kicking the tires."

I was taught the way to pronounce the "n" sound is basically very close to the way we pronounce "ng" at the end of words in English, like in "sing" or "tong."

Thank you *_so much_* for posting this video at this time!!! I just posted a haiku 2 days ago on a weather news video from Japan uploaded on the u.s. KZbin and purely guessed that ん counted as a syllable (mora)! It reads: 日本に は ５ る、夏、秋。冬 ７ ありません。 ５ (Because of it being November and still having 夏日's.) I'm not sure if I can break the 春 like that to make it fit the 5-7-5 pattern, but I did anyway.

Hi flarklooney8339. When you want to say はる, you can't omit first letter は. Because just る doesn't mean 春. But evenif you write 春, the middle section will have 8 syllables. So you have to use a little advanced technique called jiamari. If you don't know how to use jiamari, I think a compound word 春夏秋冬 will be a better word. Syllables will be syu-n-ka-syu-u-to-o. This is also a little advances technique though. Thanks.

Fun fact… I used the word ‘mora’ in this video but cut it in the edit. I almost posted a haiku I did 20 years ago but decided against that as well. Also, can you split a word in haiku like you split はる?

I'm not sure how other people are visually seeing the haiku comment when multible languages are used. Under [Translate this page] if it's set to [Detected Language] then the haiku is on seperate lines; however, if it's set to [English] then it makes the haiku unreadable. I'm sorry if this has caused confusion.

We don’t lengthen the sound though. We change it. We call it them long and short but we don’t actually have to take two beats for a long vowel and one beat for the short. It’s just one beat with a different sound. But I hadn’t considered the implications of English actually having a “short” and “long” vowel naming convention when I made this video. Interesting!

There are a ton of English signs in Japan. It's really traveler friendly. Even the trains announce everything in English. It's nice to learn hiragana and katakana for sure.

I think I can speak for the most of us who watch you for years that we would appreciate more lesson videos like this instead of the drama about pitch accent or something like that. I know drama brings more tranction to your videos, just saying I personally love your classic lesson videos. I personally don't give a dood about pitch accent I have the same view as you. Language is a communication tool not a painting that needs to be perfected. Here in Germany we are multi cultural and I always find it nice if some people have weird accent or pronounciation, it isn't a flaw in my eyes but just a characteristic.
