I'm just remembering how when my mom got married, there were candles lining the aisle beside the pews. Going up the aisle with my dad, the train of her gown caught on one of the candle holders and like flammable dominos, it started a chain reaction. In the wedding video, you can see the guests reaching to catch the falling candlesticks. Ironically, nearly 20 years later, I nearly lit the same church on fire trying to light a candle for my confirmation.

Oh man oh man- if I had Reddit I would post there but here goes: I started dating a bipolar guy while he was on his meds. We'd been good friends for almost a year before we started dating and I'd been supporting him in his journey towards improved mental health. He was doing really well, which was why I'd decided to go for it with him. Now, for a bit of background: he was a white guy from middle-of-nowhere Iowa. When I first met him (and things were still platonic), he'd just moved to my big West Coast city with a girlfriend (who was white, like him). He broke up with her in order to ask me out. Their relationship was never a good one to begin with (she was emotionally abusive and treated him like she was his mother... that was some hardcore foreshadowing) so I didn't feel bad about him leaving that relationship. Fast forward to 4 months into us being together and he wants to introduce me to his family via Skype. He hadn't mentioned that I'm black, and turned out his family was racist. His mother (whom he worshipped and let control his life) went on and on about how much she liked his ex - the one that had been abusive- and how he shouldn't settle for anyone who didn't treat him as "well" as his mother. Not only that, but she then purposefully convinced him to go off his meds so that he'd be in a bad way and she could fly in on her broomstick and "rescue" him from ME. Him going off his meds resulted in him attempting to strangle me to death one night (about 2 months in of him being unmedicated). During my fight for my life he broke 3 of my ribs and my right wrist. I broke his nose. I never saw him again after that night but I know that he had his mother fly him back to Iowa immediately after. She had the nerve to call me and threaten to press charges for breaking "her baby's" nose. I was more shaken up than angry (at the time) so I calmly told her what happened and begged her to get him back on his meds. She replied with "there's nothing wrong now that he's away from you, you nigger bitch"... Well, he has a restraining order and a warrant against him now. I'd say there's plenty wrong.

48:00 Normal rational women don't suddenly turn into irrational bridezillas when they start planning the wedding. They were ALWAYS like that and have just managed to hide it long enough to get engaged. Just because you're stressed out that doesn't give you the right to scream and take out your anger on other people. In fact if the woman you're going to marry starts acting like a bridezilla RUN! UpRUN FAR AWAY. Because if she acts irrationally entitled OR takes out the stress frustration and anger on other people that is how she will act under ALL stress. And you better believe you're the one who is going to bear the brunt of her irrational anger for years if you marry her. It's far better to cancel a wedding than have to go through a messy divorce.

Exactly what my parents, in-laws and my husband and I did 😅😅😅 big wedding wasn't our thing, nor theirs so I appreciated their support when we pitched the idea. Got hitched, had a mean feast afterwards, then called it in early and died for the rest of the day just sleeping. My mum was concerned that we were not ok, because newly weds are supposed to be celebrating. But that WAS our celebration, just sleeping xD

@@zeeblue1220 Same for my sister currently. Over the past year and a half she has been in a constant battle with her in-laws about how her and their sons wedding will be. The in-laws want it massive, they want it grand, it is very much a statement wedding. My sister and her fiance just want it casual and intimate. No unnessesary things, just friends, family and food. They tried their best to cater to their wishes as they were just happy to get married, however the list was endless and she started feeling like a ghost. Eventually it all came to a boil and she said, "Fine, simple garden wedding it is. Be there or don't."

1st wedding 480+ guests, year of planning, full mass ceremony (I’m not Catholic he is no offense) 8 bridesmaids, giant dress, professional planner over flowers and events to include a huge reception w/ open bar. didn’t sit down all day or night and had a professional photographer following me around. Walked in to him screwing the daycare lady 3 years later. 2nd marriage; bought my dress $25 with a $5 off coupon, melted my veil the night before (mom and now hubby rebuilt it while having makeup/hair done) mom made bridal bouquet from grocery store roses in car on way to ceremony, reception was just simple at my moms no huge cake etc, spent our wedding night with our daughters (his, mine now we refer to as ours) 10 years later I remember this night like it was yesterday down to his cologne and falling asleep cuddled next to him for the first time as his wife. Still makes my heart smile!!! The point is a wedding is a overdone party, what matters is who you share it with. I Married my soulmate that night in my “coupon dress” and would do it all over again. 10 years later. He’s my everything, He’s my heart! To the lady who was on her menstrual cycle, what a wonderful man to even know to go get tampons but should have handed to her more discreetly. Had I been beside them I would have offered to help by Google translate, picked up the box of tampons asked her husband to tell her to follow me. Head to the bathroom with her and used Google translate to help there’s wonderful lady along! Hopefully we could’ve figured it out and when it was just us girls I would’ve asked Google translate to let her know you have a good man!

Not a wedding but the story of the grandfather dying during the wedding reminded me of when I was 5 and I was having a McDonald's play place birthday party and my dad and his sister disappeared during. Well turns out their mom, my grandma (duh), died of a massive heart attack on the way to my 5th birthday party. And apparently a few days later I was a much needed point of levity at her funeral because my naive kid self was greeting everyone and saying stuff like "hi! My grandma is dead and she's over here and that room come look!" What a rollercoaster of emotion that had to have been, but I was 5 so none of it really registered in my stupid kid brain and it just sounds so fake but so many people tell me the same story.

Bouquets of succulents is pretty cool, but you don't throw it. You get a smaller throw bouquet. I made my best friend a huge succulent and eucalyptus bouquet, with some normal flowers in the back, for her wedding this summer. It was great, but super heavy. No cacti in it. She threw one that was small and had the same type of flowers as the back of the bouquet I made.

55:59 this is basically my aunt, idk is she's actually mail order tho, they say they met when my uncle went to teach English in her country, she's taiwanese and married my uncle and moved to our home country, she's so sweet and fun but we kinda get the feeling she's unhappy with my uncle, we're sure that if she divorced him, he'd be a bum living off my grandma while she went back to Taiwan, I'm sure most of their money is spent on her flights to visit home and the rest is for rent and groceries. I think the only positive she sees with her marriage is that she likes to see us and my grandma, we love her and she even brought me back souveniers from her trip to Japan with her sister.

I sometimes felt a bit "bridezilla" in the months prior to the wedding. He told me at home (we lived together already) that he would propose to me at Thanksgiving. Where only his family would be, considering we'd moved out of state and away from mine. Peed me off that he'd just casually tell me when he'd be announcing it. I mean, I knew he'd be asking, he knew I was going to agree. Told him he'd better rethink that, if he wanted the answer he expected on Thanksgiving. One panicked look from him later, and he was down on his knee at that moment, and I accepted. And gave him his "big, in front of family reveal" proposal acceptance. We go over to his mother's to begin planning out the wedding. She ASKS ME what sort of wedding I want. "JoP," I tell her. And when she looks shocked at this, continue. "We can't afford a big wedding, I'm not going into debt for a wedding, and my family isn't paying for this." Well. She AND he tell me they totally want the "big church wedding" thing. I'm not feeling like this is the hill to die on, so I tell them they can have the church wedding. "But you'll both be doing the planning. I'll retain veto rights, and show up on the day in my dress." HA! As if I'd get off so lucky... Vetoed things left and right for cost reasons, including any sort of bar. I don't drink at all, my bf only drank socially, never kept a single (or multiple) beer/wine in our fridge at home, and I wasn't paying for people to get drunk on my big day. Most of whom I didn't know. No flower petals tossed for me to walk over. Not the main church, but a smaller building they had for smaller events. I know I frustrated his mother a LOT with my vetoes. In my defense, she could have told me I had a budget to work with, and I would have allowed her more of the things she wanted. Believing I was paying for everything... HELL no! She only got the bigger guest list by tricking me. "What if money was no object?" she asked. "Well, if money was no object, sure, invite everyone who wants to come. But money is an object," I reminded her. I still went to the tastings. For food I barely got to eat any of, to thank a room full of mostly strangers for showing up. Still had to deal with my flowers. (eye roll) And before the reception was quite over, MIL pulls me into the kitchen and asks how much we spent. Since I kept hold of the money (thank goodness!), I could give her a rough estimate. And she wrote me out a check for that amount. I held my tongue, not wanting to throw the huge fit I was feeling for her not bothering to tell me I had a budget to work with. That she'd pay me back, if I stayed reasonable. NOT throwing that fit? Hardest thing I'd done all day.

I hate stories and people like this. It's is the bride and groom's big day, they should agree on everything and find a median of what they want. Other people be damned, it's your and your spouse's day! You need to be happy! It also goes better if the other people are happy, but people are happy with warm food and something to drink and that's easily arranged.

My ml planned my whole wedding as well and I was really sad that my guests were eating finger sandwiches and chips made by my sister in law and there was no music at reception so no first dance and no dance with my dad, also the photographer was her friend from church and the only pictures that I ended up with that had my family were the ones that her family as well, all of the special pictures I requested and took with my family and my best friend disappeared and I was told that the photographer had run out of film!?! And to top it all off when I was asking the photographer to take a special picture with my best friend my ml came up and whispered to me that "those people " shouldn't even be here referring to my best friends and her husband, that was the one and only time I was stern with her and she looked pretty dumb when I told her in front of her friend that "those people were my best friend in the entire universe and her husband and they were playing with the children in my family that they have been aunt and uncle to since they were born! Part 2 of this story is called "Honeymoon from Hell" and it involves a theme motel room, waking up to a million ants in our tub, sharing the hot tub with 7 drunk immigrants (no offense, my grandparents were immigrants but these guys were in rough shape like they may have just got here after a very long foot trip), and garage sale-ing as the highlight of the honeymoon.

Thankfully the Aunt did not have kids. I could just imagine how she would’ve been as a mother.

Early '90s I worked this job and got a new supervisor, a near middle aged but recently married woman. My coworker and I could totally tell that she only took the job so she and her husband could qualify for a mortgage and that she was trying like hell to get pregnant so she could take paid maternity leave and then quit. Bingo both counts. Anyway, she kept insisting she couldn't work weekends: "I'm IN 7 weddings this summer!" - like I was supposed to be impressed by this. Just for fun, this woman and I who worked under her came up with an elaborate theory that there was a group of desperate women approaching 40 who got together and formed a tight mutual support group, sort of like Weight Watchers, but for the purpose of finding husbands. We imagined them having study sessions of the book The Rules and hitting the high end bars in hunting packs. Bet we weren't far from the truth.

the sister of my first serious boyfriend married her bf of 10 months. my bf (an obviously gay high voiced teddy bear) stood for his sister, and the groom's sister stood for him. the groom's conservative russian orthodox family didn't like this, they had a general problem with my bf (and by extension myself) and didn't even want him in the wedding in addition to this, while my bf's family never really acted outright homophobic, it was clear they never approved of me, so they didn't seat me (his bf of 3ys) with the rest of the immediate family (the only people at the wedding i actually knew) and obviously didn't seat me at the head table, so they sat me at the sort of "outcast table" no one else at that table showed up, luckily i was saved by the only member of the family i had actually been warned against as a homophobe, my bf's aunt she was already well into her cups by dinner, knew exactly who i was and didn't care, she grabbed one of the wine bottles on my table and told me to bring the other, and i got drunk and ate with HER family instead of my bf's it wasn't all bad though, i still had my first slow dance that night

I feel depressed every time hear stories about " Engaged, Marriage, Filipino girls and green cards" It reminds me of my EX and 4 yrs bad relationship with him. He always thought that I'm using him for getting a green card but I'm never interested in moving or staying in a different country, I never ask for money because I have a stable job and I have a degree. It's shame to be a person that uses people. I will never use someone for personal or financial gain only because I don't want a miserable relationship or marriage. I don't want to be like my parent's marriage. It scares me a lot. I always wanted a partner in crime, to share memes, play video games, watch movies/animes, like vodka and funny jokes, sometimes serious and a shoulder to cry on. Now, I'm almost 30 and no longer interested in having a relationship or marriage because I'm still traumatized but it's okay I'm happy this way.

I was 3 mo before the date and I ran out. He was super controlling and always harsh with me. The final straw was when he ignored my worries when I had a staff infection. Finally once my best friend took me to the er drs said I was hours away from the infection entering my blood stream. He only cared after I told him it was over.

I got engaged christmas 2019 at 1208 am. I felt bad for my husband, he had a beautiful plan. He was planning to drive around looking af Christmas lights in yards until 12 to ask me. But everyone had turned their lights off so we drove around some random neighborhood and he asked me as we were passing a gas station. I really love him so I told him I didn't care and thought it made a cute story. Would still like a redo though but I'm afraid it might go bad too.

That comment "back pain is no joke"! I know how that feels! I didn't herniate a disc, (I still don't know what I did!) but my lower back has been hurting since Saturday March 27, 2021; it is currently April fools day and no it's not a joke! Mom and I were cleaning my area of the house (which happens to be the basement) so it didn't look like a pig sty when the AT&T guy came over to install the AT&T Fiber at our house. I could hardly move once the pain started and it also ruined my appetite; barely had a few bites of food at lunch! Thankfully, it's not as bad as when it started, after taking Tylenol and Advil (not at the same time and waiting several hours in between taking the pills) to help with pain relief, the pain is slowly but surely going away!

I can't tell you how much this breaks my heart That people turn their back on their family... It just goes to show that you can't necessarily trust that the people you love are good will you love are gonna love you back.... And sometimes they tell you to leave, and dont give a reason, or because your qore the qrong color, or just because you're gay... It scares me how conditional how fully conditional love is, from somebody that biologically generated you. Because in the end that's all it is to them and and you have to let that be all it was to you too. I have biological information donors, And I have a mom and fking killed me to lose her, and have Society replaced her with my biological mom because she generated me with with the use of the sperm... By accident. I didn't ask to be here... I don't know about the rest of you but I sure didn't ask to be here especially not With people that tell you aren't worth being loved

My husband proposed on our second date. We were in the military. It was the 70s, so yeah. He then transfered to Germany. We got married a year later, three fabulous girls, nine grandchildren, 46 years later still the love of my life. Had ups and downs over the years but as I am looking at that man I realise some times quick marriages do work and I hope all these women find the one for them!

The first story at braids by mail has a nice outcome.. Yes, she left her family and friends behind but she was one of the lucky once not been turned into modern slave. She asked for a better education and he did his best so she can get it. That shows that not all of those men are trash or monsters, some of them just needed another way. Good luck to that family and i hope that they are happy .

My parents first date started when my mom got off of her shift at a local restaurant and went nextdoor to the bar that my dad worked at, most of the staff at both places knew each other and would come over after work but it was a particularly rough day for my mom and she had a little bit of everything on her shirt. Anyways, my dad came over to her place at the bar and said, and I quote "You look like shit, let me buy you a drink", they've been married for years now

I feel really sorry for the mail order brides. They get treated so badly. It’s human trafficking so much of the time as evidenced by these stories. The woman the family assumes was a prostitute who just loved them all as they’re the ONLY family she has in the US being judged like that broke my heart. In cultures other than the freaking US, family is important. And you don’t have to have a “blood connection” to be family. I’ll preface this by saying I’m Italian American and not a mail order bride: My ex husband’s family does not consider those who married into the family to be family. Funny because his white father married his Japanese wife right after WW2 where he was fighting Japan in the South Pacific and she was in an internment camp here in the USA with her family. My nephews were told I wasn’t their aunt and they always treated me like a stranger tho I saw them often. His siblings spread rumors that my youngest wasn’t his child which made things worse. She was more fair than the older two who both looked very Asian when they were born. By the time she was 2, she looked very much like her father’s mother. Even after it was proven that she is his child, they treated her like crap. She’s never even met any of her cousins tho they’re friendly with my son. Not enough to have been invited to his wedding tho. None of his aunts and uncles have been invited. But now they want to claim my youngest and tell her how beautiful she is… because she’s stunning. They tell her how accomplished she is. How great she turned out. Yeah, because after age 8, their dad stopped spending any time with them and I raised them alone without any help or visits at all from his family. They lived in the same town as me. My son, as an adult looks like my dad. Not Asian at all. Funnily enough, he’s the only one who will talk to any of them or to my ex.

My neighbors arranged green card marriages for all of her siblings and were very dismayed when one of her sisters fell in love with her green card husband and refused to divorce him and lived happily with him and had two kids. The rest followed her orders. Her brother went thru four wives because he was so abusive. They tried to get me to marry him but I wasn’t stupid, he was very cute and charming but no thanks, and a male friend refused to marry one of the sisters.

Had a mother-in-law-zilla. We planned a court house wedding with take out after at our apartment. His mother went ballistic. She demanded we get married at her church. Turned out to be the National Episcopal Cathedral. I gave that a HARD no. The priest shows us a side chapel. I’m an atheist. I didn’t want a church wedding but I was sick of her tantrum and agreed on the small chapel that seated around 45 people. Of those 45, 15 were my guests. We get to the reception, which she had moved to her house, and she had invited about 60 more people neither of us had ever met. We were fully grown adults who combined two fully adult homes. His cousin is a caterer and offered to cater the wedding which was just going to be finger foods. MIL never told her about the increased guest list so there was nowhere near enough food or drinks. We wanted a dry wedding because she was a loud, obnoxious drunk. These are wealthy people so she ordered CASES of liquor and hired a bar tender. She called the baker a week before the wedding and changed the colors on the cake from white frosting with green piping and lilac flowers to everything white and silver. It turned grey before guests and the wedding party arrived. It also wasn’t white cake with strawberries. It was marbled yellow and chocolate. Everything else she did, I don’t really care about but she wrecked my cake which was the only thing I’d chosen myself outside my maid of honor’s dress and my own. My mother made the floral arrangements. We collaborated on that. Luckily my MIL couldn’t get control of that. Mostly it didn’t matter because I didn’t want any of that but I did want my cake. She died 2.5 years later of lung cancer. We divorced after 8 years. I only stayed that long because six years in I fell and shattered my elbow and dislocated my hip. It shifted my spine out of alignment. The doctor who fixed my elbow screwed it up and the bones in the joint were coming apart and dying. I had 4 reconstructive surgeries over 3 years. It was a mess from start to end.

36:07 I'm pretty sure all of that is grounds to refuse to pay/demand a refund. After all, a contract isn't negotiable after it's signed, and with all those violations, pretty sure that's a slam dunk of a lawsuit, especially if they didn't offer a discount or to refund some of what was already paid to apologize for all the screw ups.

My first wedding my mil was baking and decorating my wedding cake. I told her if she would make the flowers purple. She was like no it has to be all white. I said no that's boring. So to "teach me a lesson" she dyed the whole cake purple. Which is actually what I really wanted but didn't think she would do it. That's why i only asked for purple flowers. Literally they sell little purple cake flower things at the grocery store for like a $. She could have just bought those and stuck them on. Then she refused to wear makeup at the wedding and got mad that I didn't notice.
