Do this. Once cup-n-cone bearings are tuned properly, they are the smoothest things you've ever ridden.

Not much better advice than that, especially with modern phones available. I still take pics of stuff I haven't pulled apart before or a while and get pissed off when I should of and didn't...

I'm getting some new wheels and someone has told me to get the spokes tensioned before I ride them. Would you agree?

Opposite problem with a Token Konax Pro hub [D1 model] ... so much grease from the factory I was getting chain suck. The online dealer did warn me, so an easy fix.

Defo gotta be careful how much grease goes into the ratchet system. I often find a quick fix with that problem is a little bit of oil to thin the grease out...

What's Your Honest Thoughts on Traditional Cup & Cone Vs Sealed Ceramic Bearings on Vintage Rims For Rolling Resistance & Watts.

Thanks for getting in touch. Sorry, I'm not gonna get into a conversation about watts and rolling resistance parse. If we just cut the end off your Q after bearings cause the fundamentals are the same for any rims, I'll always go cup and cone over any sealed bearing. I have a video on how to replace cup and cone bearings where I also air my thoughts on which is better and why... kzbin.info/www/bejne/paukgquYmZaYq7c Check it out and if you have any further Qs, hit me up...

@@bicycleguruI did watch your video Mr BG 👍 I've both types, but my sealed ceramic bearings on my newer rims do seem to spin alot longer than my cup and cone. So thought maybe sealed ceramic cartridge would offer the same on my cup and cone wheels if fitted those over loose bearings.
@bicycleguru4 ай бұрын
@@TESTA-CC I couldn't comment with authority without having both wheel sets in my hands. I will say that if you are comparing ceramic sealed bearings with cup and cone you would need to be doing it with top end versions of the later... Dura-Ace, Campy Record, etc.

That's what it says on the tin and alot of manufacturers state things like 'only use'. I'm not saying you shouldn't follow their instructions for as high a level hub you have. From experience running workshops that aren't going to pay for dozens of different lubricants for just one particular component, I've learnt to use the best grease for 95% of situations and use the recommended stuff when necessary. By necessary, I mean try it out and see if it works before you go too far on the road. Preferably before it even gets to the road. As an example. HOPE use a very sticky marine grease for the pawls, but only put a few dabs around the ratchet ring. When I do HOPE hubs I use a bit more of the grease I have and add a bit of Finish Line Cross Country to sound and feel. Thanks for the comment

1:41 this doesn't always apply, not all wheels will require adjusting when feeling rough off the bike as the tightness will be removed when you tighten the skewer/through axle. As for overloading the hubs with grease. I mean whatever floats your boat, but the stock amount of grease you showed here 0:54 is very much an optimal amount from efficiency standpoint, unless you plan going scubadiving with your bike that is.
@channul48875 ай бұрын
@StupidDriversOfSouthLinc-oj4uv what matters is how does the wheel behave when on the bike. It should be smooth and have 0 play, otherwise it needs adjusting or repairing - with cup and cone it's easy to damage the traces if not maintained properly - sounds like maybe that's what you have there.
@channul48875 ай бұрын
@StupidDriversOfSouthLinc-oj4uv if the play cancels out and the roughness disappears once installed it should be good. That said getting in touch with wheel/hub manufacturer (I'm guessing it might be Shimano since it's cup and cone) might be the best option if you have doubts.

Depends how old that stock grease is I suppose.Old grease has a definite look and probably best removed completely with the ball bearings and new grease added in moderation.
